Connor Wong added a sacrifice fly and Wilyer Abreu was credited with a sacrifice on a safety squeeze for an RBI during the inning, sending Boston to its third straight win over the AL West leaders and fifth in a row overall.
Giolito (8-2) gave up the run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk, eclipsing his previous season-high innings of 7 2/3 on July 4.
Carlos Correa, acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline, hit a homer for Houston, which has lost eight of 10.
The game's first pitch was 11:38 a.m. EDT, the third time this season the Red Sox began a game in the morning. The others: their annual Patriots' Day game when they beat the White Sox and the Independence Day victory at the Nationals.

Patriots corner Marcellus Dial reportedly out for season with torn ACL

The New England Patriots' secondary took another hit Tuesday, as second-year defensive back Marcellus Dial has reportedly suffered a torn ACL that will end his season. Dial had to be carted off the field after he injured his left leg during Monday's practice in an 11 vs. 11 drill in Foxboro. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss reported Tuesday that Dial has suffered a torn ACL, which will land him on season-ending injured reserve. Dial was a sixth-round pick by New England in 2024 and made the 53-man roster as a rookie after a strong training camp. He played in all 17 regular-season games last year, and while he got the bulk of his action on special teams, Dial also played 60 defensive snaps for the Patriots. Dial finished with 12 tackles and a forced fumble as a rookie. He was playing slot corner along with Marcus Jones in training camp this summer, and was in line to be a core special teams player again in 2025. But now his second NFL season is over before it had a chance to begin. Cornerback has been a tough position for the Patriots in training camp. Veteran Carlton Davis was signed to a three-year, $60 million contract in the offseason, but he has only participated in walkthrough practices this summer. Top corner Christian Gonzalez was lost to a hamstring injury last week, though the injury isn't expected to linger into the regular season. With Dial lost for the season, it will place an even bigger importance on the development on New England's younger defensive backs. Alex Austin and DJ James have been lining up as the team's top outside corners this week, and both could find themselves in important depth roles by the time the regular season arrives. New England also has Isaian Bolden, Miles Battle, seventh-round pick Cobee Minor, and undrafted rookie Brandon Crossley on their defensive back depth chart.

How close is Ohio State QB battle? What we've learned about Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State's quarterback competition remains close through five preseason practices. Reporters weren't able to view practice on Tuesday, but Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said both second-year quarterback Julian Sayin and third-year quarterback Lincoln Kienholz continue to have good moments — and 'moments when they are growing.' Advertisement Though the names have changed with each offseason quarterback competition, what Day and quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler are looking for has not. 'You have to be consistent,' Fessler said. 'You have to make the routine plays on a consistent basis.' Now that pads are on and they are looking more comfortable in team drills, the next step will be for the quarterbacks to carry that consistency over to situational drills. Fessler said as practice continues, they'll get into more two-minute drives and red-zone and third-down opportunities for Kienholz and Sayin. Whether there's a gap building between the two, Day would not say, but he did say he is pleased with their progress and added that he thinks this battle could last until the end of preseason camp. 'We aren't where we need to be,' Day said, 'but if they continue to learn from the mistakes they're making and grow off the plays they are doing well and moving the offense and taking care of the football, then it's going to go right down to the wire.' Day, Fessler and the quarterbacks met with the media on Tuesday to discuss the early stages of camp with 25 days before Texas visits. Here are a few takeaways from the conversations: Most analysts around the country believe Sayin is the frontrunner to be Ohio State's quarterback, but the former five-star recruit — who originally signed with Alabama before Nick Saban retired — doesn't look at it like that. The California native doesn't get on social media much and tries to stay away from outside noise. His focus has been on adding some weight and working on his mechanics and footwork. He's up to 210 pounds from the 203 pounds he was listed at in the spring. He's also feeling more confident as a leader of the offense. 'It has to be authentic, you can't be somebody that you're not,' Sayin said. 'There's different styles of it, but I'm developing that vocal leadership role.' Advertisement Sayin has been praised for his arm talent dating back to his time at Carlsbad High School, and that's been on display this offseason. Two things that have stood out to Day, though, have been Sayin's quickness and decision-making. 'He's very smart, he makes good decisions and the ball comes out of his hand accurate,' Day said. The last time Kienholz got extended playing time for the Buckeyes was in the 2023 Cotton Bowl, when he replaced an injured Devin Brown in the second quarter. Ohio State lost to Missouri 14-3 and Kienholz finished 6-of-17 for 86 yards. Ohio State soon brought in Kansas State transfer Will Howard, who led the Buckeyes to the national title in his one season in Columbus. The Cotton Bowl was a growing moment for Kienholz, a true freshman at the time. He enters this season in much better physical and mental space. He's up to 215 pounds, stands 6 feet 3 and was named an 'Iron Buckeye,' an honor given to Ohio State players who excelled in the offseason. That was one of his goals. 'It means a lot,' he said. 'It's something everybody should strive for.' An honor like no other, your 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 ⚒️ 🌰 @SiereveldAustin 🌰 @kjacksonjr_ 🌰 @LincolnKienholz 🌰 @payton_pierce26 🌰 @sonnystyles_ 🌰 @carnelltate_ 🌰 @Jermiah_Smith1 🌰 @Jaylenmcclain08 — Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) August 1, 2025 He's getting the ball out quicker, which had to do with some tweaks he made to his throwing mechanics and footwork, and is also dissecting defenses faster. 'Coach Day always tells me to keep the ball up so I don't go through a big wind motion and then just flick and follow,' Kienholz said. One of the biggest strengths for Kienholz is his athleticism. He was a three-sport athlete at T.F. Riggs High School in South Dakota and his mobility is obvious in practice. Though he's wearing a black jersey, which means he can't be hit during practice, Ohio State is allowing him to extend plays to evaluate that part of his game. Advertisement He's been moved off of his spot at times, especially in rollouts, and he's also made plays by avoiding pressure or hitting a hole up the middle when the coverage is good. 'He's a great athlete and it's got to be something he plays to his strength,' Fessler said. 'Although we can't see it quite as well, there's still definitely a feel for that.' The five-star Class of 2025 signee had a standout career at Bellefontaine High School, completing 68 percent of his passes with 29 touchdowns and four interceptions as a senior while playing less than an hour from Ohio State's campus. In high school, his ability to create plays out of nothing was crucial to his team's success. At Ohio State, he's having to adjust his mentality to being able to make the routine reads and throws on time, while still keeping some of his talent for improvisation. That was one of his main takeaways from the spring, he said. 'Everything was moving fast,' St. Clair said. 'At Bellefontaine, I had good players, but they aren't to the level of what I have here, so I felt obligated to go make the play. It wasn't always the right play, but here you have great players who are going to be in the right spots. They know what they're supposed to do, all you have to do is get the ball to them at the right time.' Making that mental change isn't as easy as flipping a switch. It's something he's actively working on. 'I've built on it — going into the fall I'm getting a lot better on it,' St. Clair said. 'I still have a ton of growth to make as a quarterback and where I want to be for this room, but it's different. For me it took a little while because I had to get the reps in the spring and the summer.' Of the three quarterbacks, St. Clair is the one with the least amount of pressure. The freshman is in a position where he's not being thrust into the starting lineup. Advertisement The 6-4, 230-pound St. Clair has all the intangibles to be an impact player in the future, and his arm strength is off the charts. Now he gets a chance to develop the mental side of the game without being thrown into the fire.

Justin Fields says Jets' offense is improving despite recent struggles in training camp

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Justin Fields knows he and the New York Jets' offense are a work in progress. Well, the only way for them to go after 11 training camp practices is up. Especially after the past few underwhelming sessions. 'I think we're improving, especially from the start of training camp to now,' Fields said Tuesday. 'Of course, today wasn't up to our standard in terms of penalties and stuff like that. But like I said, just a base summary for you all, I definitely think we have improved, for sure.' A day after going 4 of 16 in team drills, Fields was unofficially 9 of 16 on Tuesday. There have been bad throws, ugly drops and penalties negating positive plays. But the focus — and of course, the blame — usually sits on the quarterback, especially after the Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason to replace Aaron Rodgers. 'Some of it's me, some of it's dropping the ball, some of it's just plain and simple things,' Fields said. 'Stuff that, you know, it's practice.' Fields also dealt with a dislocated toe on his right foot just a few days into camp, but says he's feeling a lot better. 'There's probably still a little bit of swelling,' he said. 'I just have to go from a 12 1/2 (shoe) to a 13. So, I'm all good other than that.' Fields is on his third team while entering his fifth NFL season and learning his fourth offensive system. The Jets think he's a good fit for new coordinator Tanner Engstrand's offense, but it's still early in camp and mistakes have outnumbered the successes. 'There was a number of things, as far as the way his command was of the offense and knowing exactly what to do was outstanding,' coach Aaron Glenn said of Fields' performance Tuesday. 'Some of his throws wasn't on point, but again, a lot of them were on point and guys got to make plays for him, too. So that kind of showed up today and we've got to get ready to fix those things. 'So, it goes hand in hand with quarterback and receivers. He has to deliver the ball and they have to catch it.' Still, the defense has outplayed the offense by far through the first part of camp. But Glenn refuses to sound any alarms about his quarterback and offense. 'It's early right now and I'm looking at Week 1,' Glenn said of the regular-season opener against Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 7. 'We have a long time until we get to that point and the type of men that we have, I know our men are going to pick it up and get it going. So, I'm not worried at all. The thing that I'm more concerned about are things that we have to do to make ourselves ready for Week 1, the things that we're trying to create in training camp, those are the things that I think about on a daily basis.' Glenn hasn't publicly said whether his starters, including Fields, will play against the Packers. But the quarterback appeared in favor of doing so. 'I think we need to at least see the field each and every game,' Fields said. 'I think that will be good for our team, it will be good for Tanner in the in-game stuff, it will be good for me, the guys on offense. I know some guys, they sit out the whole preseason, but I don't think that's the case for us, just because of the new team, new offense, and stuff like that. So, that's kind of how I feel about the situation.' The Jets have a day off followed by a practice Thursday, their last before they head to Green Bay. 'It's inevitable,' Fields said. 'You know you're going to have these days in training camp. ... That's why we're out here working. And defense, they won the day at the end of the day. 'So, it's about how we respond on Thursday, and we've got to come out hot.' ___ AP NFL:
