Denz breaks away to win for Roglic as Del Toro protects Giro lead
Even so, the race continued to take a toll on the big names. Juan Ayuso started the stage but retired two days after Primoz Roglic, the other big pre-race favourite, pulled out.
Denz, a 31-year-old German, surged away from the other 10 remaining members of the lead group to give Roglic's Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team their first win of a disastrous Giro.
'Everyone on the team had the big goal to win the Giro with Primoz,' Denz said. 'You lose a leader like Roglic, you lose a dream. But we turned it round.'
Italian Mirco Maestri sprinted to second 1min 1sec later, edging Belgian Edward Planckaert.

Overall leader Isaac Del Toro rolled home alongside his main rivals 13min 51sec back. The Mexican has two former grand tour winners in close pursuit. He is a mere 41 seconds ahead of Richard Carapaz and 51sec ahead of Simon Yates.
Asked what was on his mind on the eve of the final battle, the 21-year-old Del Toro replied that he would go to bed thinking of having Nutella for breakfast.
The transitional stage from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno was designed to give sprinters a chance and the main contenders a rest, ahead of two days of high-altitude battles.
Instead, a breakaway group of almost 40 riders, none well placed overall, coalesced up the road. With almost every team represented, the pack let the break go and spent the gently 144km run rolling easily along.
The stage ended with two 12.5km laps, and the peloton was so slow that there was a danger it would start its first circuit just as the leaders were beginning their last loop.
Organisers solved the problem by asking the previously dormant Q36.5 team, which had no riders in the breakaway, to up the pace at the head of the pack.
Ayuso, the designated leader of the UAE team, started the day more than 49 minutes behind teammate Del Toro, his right eye completely closed after he was stung by a hornet the day before. Ayuso had also been nursing a knee injury since a crash on stage nine that required three stitches.
Meanwhile, Irish pair Darren Raffery and Sam Bennett finished in 82nd and 143rd place, leaving them 86th and 147th overall.
Bennett is now 45th in the points classification.
Saturday's 166km run from Del Biella to Champoluc includes three first-category climbs. It is the first of two ferocious mountain days before the survivors can roll into Rome in triumph on a flat final day when the route passes the Vatican, where the new pope is expected to watch.

Kai Havertz injury forces Arsenal to focus on new striker as transfer window nears close
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Havertz is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering the issue and is now undergoing assessments to determine the extent of the injury. Given these are still at an early stage, the prognosis and how long he will be out for is still unclear. The 26-year-old German missed an opening training session at the Emirates on Wednesday morning and his absence means the Gunners will now re-enter the transfer market as they actively explore their options to strengthen the attack and provide cover. Boss Mikel Arteta wants a left winger as competition for Gabriel Martinelli, although already reportedly had to sell before the club is able to buy. The need for a striker now just adds a further wrinkle. Havertz came off the bench on 60 minutes during Sunday's Premier League opening 1-0 win over Manchester United to replace new signing Viktor Gyokeres, who is still getting fully up to speed with life at the Emirates. However, the Swedish international is now the only fully fit and available striker for Arteta, with Gabriel Jesus still recovering from the ACL injury he picked up back in January and not expected to be ready for match action for some time. Winger Leandro Trossard has previously featured as a No 9, and could be an option after recently signing a new contract, while central midfielder Mikel Merino filled in as emergency cover up front for a spell last season when Arsenal ran out of viable forwards. That Merino stint at No 9 partly came due to a previous Havertz injury, when he tore his hamstring during a warm-weather training camp in Dubai in February. He went on to miss 18 matches before returning as a substitute for the final couple of games of the season. The German international has scored 29 goals for the Gunners since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and his absence will put even more pressure on Gyokeres to quickly adapt to life in the Premier League and prove he can be a prolific goalscorer for a title-chasing team. After the largely unconvincing 1-0 win over Man United, Arsenal next host newly-promoted Leeds on Saturday aiming to avoid any early-season slip-ups as they try to wrest the Premier League trophy out of Liverpool's grasp this year. Meanwhile, Arsenal fans believe Real Madrid have dropped the biggest hint yet that Rodrygo will be allowed to leave this summer. Arsenal could face strong competition from Manchester City as well as Liverpool for Rodrygo's signature as their Premier League rivals are also on the market to bolster their respective attacks. YouTuber Mark Goldbridge has been awarded part of the Bundesliga's live broadcasting rights in the United Kingdom, allowing him to show matches this season. This new agreement - the first time a major European football league has awarded its broadcasting rights to a content creator - will be in place for the Bundesliga's first round of fixtures this weekend, which kicks off on Friday night with defending champions Bayern Munich hosting RB Leipzig. That match — and all other Friday night games for the next two seasons — will be shown live on the BBC, on both the website and the iPlayer while Gary Neville's 'The Overlap' and Goldbridge's 'That's Football' channels will share those rights, showing 20 live Friday night games in 2025-26 in watch-along formats. All games will be free-to-air while the Bundesliga's own YouTube channel will be live broadcasting all Friday night games in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, the second tier of German football. The Overlap currently has over 1.5m subscribers, while Goldbridge's That's Football, boasts a further 1.39m subscribers. 'That's Football will stream 20 live Bundesliga matches on Friday nights as well as creating 34 weekly shows in 25/26 – the first creator channel with official league rights," Goldbridge's channel posted on Twitter.
