The Ocean House at 40: Cape Cod's coastal culinary spot still a staple in the community

Yahoo4 days ago
For four decades, the Ocean House in Dennis Port has been a landmark of Cape Cod's fine-dining scene.
Built in 1983 by the Hart family on beachfront land purchased in the 1960s, it began as a single-room restaurant and owner's residence overlooking Nantucket Sound. Its first reviews applauded both polished hospitality and gourmet cuisine served by formally dressed staff.
Under owner and general manager Janet Hart-Barbato, along with her daughter, Kari Anne Hart, The Ocean House has remained family-owned for more than 40 years.
The duo have navigated changing tastes, scaling back the formality of its early years while preserving high standards of service and culinary innovation.
A turning point in the restaurant's evolution came with the recruitment of Executive Chef Tom Woods. A Rhode Island native and Johnson & Wales graduate, Woods honed his craft in Boston kitchens, including Ming Tsai's Blue Dragon and the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville. He joined Ocean House's team the spring of 2021.
Chef Woods speaks fondly of his Cape Cod roots — holidays spent clamming, fishing and gathering vegetables shaped his commitment to local bounty.
His signature dish, Day Boat Halibut, exemplifies this ethos — a pan-seared halibut filet served over brown butter couscous with summer corn, tomatoes, passion fruit coulis and delicate pea microgreens.
The restaurant blends New England seafood traditions with Asian flavors such as with its popular small plates, including ahi tuna tartar, Jonah crab rangoons and rock shrimp calamari.
The Ocean House continues to gather acclaim as it's named among OpenTable's Top 100 Scenic Restaurants of 2023 and winning Cape Cod Times' Community Choice awards for Best Waterfront, Fine Dining and Most Romantic Restaurant.
Looking forward, The Ocean House remains a family affair with the Hart lineage at the helm.
Behind the scenes, Woods leads a culinary team rooted in local ingredients and contemporary technique. As it embraces its landmark status, this beach-side gem continues to deliver both seaside views and memorable plates.

Istria Is Europe's Unsung Food Destination and This Travel Advisor's Expert Itinerary Takes You Through Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia

Istria—a region that includes parts of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia—is a fascinating cultural hub that I love to recommend to travelers looking for a culinary-focused trip. Taste delicious wines, hunt for truffles, and visit innovative restaurants on this journey through a relatively compact area. Most of the highlights in this culinary triangle are within a two-hour drive from each other—and train service is limited—so driving is the best way to explore the region. Here, my recommendations for a culinary journey through Istria. A canal in Trieste, first stop is the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Stay in the capital city of Trieste, defined by Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic influences. Together, these flavors create a unique local cuisine that ranges from fresh seafood to hearty soups. Then, drive north about an hour to the Collio wine region, where a host of white grape varietals—such as Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, and Sauvignon Blanc—are widely grown. Many local winemakers here practice organic or biodynamic methods, and there's a focus on low-intervention techniques. For a special experience, visit Tenuta Borgo Conventi for private tastings and tours where you can get intel directly from winemakers on the vineyard. Chef Ana Roš in the kitchen. Luka Karlin, Studio Virc/Slovenia Tourism Board It's a short drive from Trieste to Slovenia, which is full of restaurants committed to sourcing local ingredients and working with small-scale farmers who prioritize sustainability. Chef Ana Roš of the three-Michelin-starred Hiša Franko catapulted to fame after being featured on Chef's Table in 2016 and being awarded World's Best Female Chef by The World's 50 Best Restaurants the following year. Inspired by her ethos, a new wave of young chefs is reimagining Slovenian food in Ljubljana, where the capital's creative spirit and close ties to nature have made it a hub for experimentation and innovation. Explore this burgeoning gastronomic culture at Odprta kuhna, a lively food market in Pogačar Square, Ljubljana, that runs every Friday from spring into fall. Here, more than 50 vendors—from renowned chefs to street-food stars—gather to showcase Slovenian classics and international-inspired dishes. For a seated meal, check out Aftr, a small, colorful bistro by chef Jorg Zupan that offers shareable plates with bold flavors and international influences. The Old Town in Rovinj, end the trip, head south into Croatia's heart-shaped Istrian peninsula. This patchwork of medieval hill towns and coastal fishing villages offers rustic meals, where the food scene is less about reinvention and more about letting top-quality ingredients speak for themselves. Award-winning olive oil, prized white truffles, air-dried pršut, and wild asparagus are everywhere here—and there is often a hands-on experience attached to each meal. Partake in a truffle hunt with trained dogs through the forest of Motovun, visit a goat farm like Kumparička to sample local cheeses, and taste olive oil as you might a fine wine at Chiavalon, a family owned farm. As for where to stay, I recommend accommodation in the coastal town of Rovinj or at the country estate Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery. Relish The Heritage Culinary Festival Celebrates A Decade In Los Cabos

Baja California Sur continues developing into an innovative and exciting culinary destination, as demonstrated by the many gastronomic festivals that are held around the area throughout the year. One of the longest running is the annual Relish the Heritage festival, which will celebrate a decade of deliciousness in 2026. Nestled between the desert, the Sea of Cortez, and the Pacific Ocean, the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa is home to the event, founded by the property's owner in collaboration with chef Thierry Blouet, owner of Café des Artistes Los Cabos. The festival showcases Mexican gastronomy, mixology, wine, and music, honoring a different culinary region of Mexico each year and fusing it with the coastal essence of its home in Baja California Sur. In 2025, the ninth festival edition celebrated the cosmopolitan spirit of Mexico City with an exceptional lineup of chefs joining the resort's host chefs, Pablo Hildebrando and Mario Rodríguez. In 2024 Michoacán was in the spotlight, while 2023 highlighted Puebla. Earlier editions have celebrated the culinary richness of Oaxaca, Yucatán, Jalisco and Veracruz, consolidating the festival as a showcase of the diversity and sophistication of contemporary Mexican cuisine. 'Relish the Heritage is an exclusive gastronomic festival,' says Hildebrando, executive chef of JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa. 'Its purpose is to celebrate the richness of Mexican gastronomy and viticulture in one of the most spectacular natural settings in Baja California Sur. Hildebrando adds that what sets Relish the Heritage apart from other food festivals organized by hotels is its intimate and exclusive nature. "It is not open to the public, and access is only possible by invitation or through Marriott Bonvoy Moments. This exclusivity not only guarantees a personalized and high-level experience but also reinforces Marriott Bonvoy's commitment to creating memorable moments for its most distinguished members." The 2025 festival started with an event celebrating Mexico City's famed street flavors, with various booths serving traditional dishes like tacos al pastor and featuring mixology by Rayo Cocktail Bar, No.5 in North America's 50 Best Bars 2024. The following evening, a special dinner at MarHumo, the resort's newly opened restaurant by Baja California's award-winning chef Javier Plascencia, honored the restaurant's name with flavors from the sea, cooked with fire and smoke, and served family-style. On Saturday afternoon, guests traveled to a nearby organic garden where chef Blouet and his daughter, chef Vanessa Blouet, harvested fresh ingredients to prepare a stunning al fresco gourmet lunch. Later in the evening, a Mexican wine tasting featured Cuban music and wines from RGMX in Coahuila and Adobe Guadalupe in the renowned Valle de Guadalupe, accompanied by tapas from Café des Artistes Los Cabos and Mexico City's award-winning Cana restaurant. To close the festival, guests were treated to an exceptional wine pairing dinner at Café des Artistes, in which chef Blouet and his team cooked alongside guest chefs, including three talented women: Fabiola Escobosa of Cana, known for a cuisine that combines freshness and urban flair; Fernanda Prado, a standout pastry chef who blends traditions with innovation; and Vanessa Blouet, who offers a modern, creative approach through her French and Mexican heritage. 'Looking ahead to the future, and especially to the celebration of its tenth anniversary, the festival is preparing for significant evolution,' says Hildebrando. "The goal is to renew its proposal with a more innovative and a multi-sensory approach, integrating new regions, emerging talents, and immersive experiences that continue to position Relish the Heritage as a benchmark of excellence in hospitality and gastronomy in Mexico.'
