Puri Gajapati urges ISKCON to resolve Digha temple row
In a letter to Shree Goverdhan Das Prabhu, Chairman of ISKCON Governing Body Commission, Mayapur, the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri said Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati Maharaj of Govardhan Peeth (Puri) and Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati Maharaj of Jyotish Peeth (Joshimath) have categorically declared that only 'Purushottama-kshetra' Puri is 'Jagannath dham' and that no other temple or place should be called as such.
Stating that ISKCON plays a key role in performing rituals at Digha's Jagannath temple, Deb, the first servitor of Lord Jagannath in Puri, said, 'Having regard to participation of ISKCON representatives in the trust board of Digha Jagannath temple, I request you to use your good offices to convince the Digha Temple Trust Board to desist from using the word 'dham' with reference to Shree Jagannath Temple at Digha.'
'As you (ISKCON) are well aware, the most revered Shankaracharyas are the highest religious authorities in Sanatana Vaidika Dharma. Moreover, Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth is the 'Adi Guru' and 'Parama Guru' in the tradition and culture of Lord Jagannath,' he said. The Muktimundupa Pundita Sabha in Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri has stated, citing relevant scriptural declarations, that Shree Jagannath Temple in Digha cannot be called 'Jagannath dham', he mentioned in the letter.
Meanwhile, a video released by Govardhan Peeth, Puri showed Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati, who is currently touring Punjab, saying: 'Lord Brahma had first installed Shree Jagannath idol in Puri Temple. Later, Adi Shankaracharya again installed the 'Daru' (wooden) idols of Lord Jagannath.'

New Delhi, Aug 16 (UNI) The festival of Janmashtami was celebrated with gaiety and religious fervor across the national capital today as devotees thronged temples decorated with flowers and lights. Since morning, the atmosphere at the temples in the city was full of enthusiasm with people visiting the places of worship where Lord Krishna hymns set the tone for the Janmashtami celebrations. Many observed fast on the occasion, while devotees decorated their puja rooms with flowers and offered sweets to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. One of the most noteworthy parts of the festival is the 'Janmashtami' tableaux, also referred to as the popular 'Jhankis,' cherished by people of all age groups, especially children. These artistic displays depicting Lord Krishna's life, especially those of his childhood were set up at temples across the city, showcasing various aspects of Krishna's life starting from his childhood, beautifully telling the story in a visual form. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also celebrated the auspicious festival with great devotion, offering prayers at temples across the national capital. Extending her heartfelt wishes to the people of Delhi, the CM prayed for peace, prosperity, good health and happiness for every citizen. Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said that the life and teachings of Lord Krishna remain a guiding light for humanity. She said that Lord Krishna's entire life inspires everyone to walk the path of righteousness, justice and duty. His message of courage, compassion and truth is timeless, and continues to show us the way forward even in difficult times, Gupta added. CM began the day's celebrations by visiting the ISKCON temple in East of Kailash, where she performed aarti, joined devotees in singing bhajans, and participated in the festivities. Later, Gupta visited Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (Qutubgarh), as well as temples in Prashant Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and other areas of Delhi. At these gatherings, she offered makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), swung the idol of child Krishna in a ceremonial cradle, and joined the devotional congregation. Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Gupta stated that Lord Krishna is not only a revered deity, but also a symbol of duty and truth. She said that through the Bhagavad Gita, he taught humanity the path of selfless action, equanimity and righteousness. 8 Delhi cops suspended after security lapses during Janmashtami at ISKCON temple
Delhi Police Commissioner S B K Singh on Saturday ordered the suspension of eight police personnel, including officers of the rank of inspector and sub-inspector, after lapses in security arrangements were detected during his visit to the ISKCON temple, an official said. Singh also issued a strict warning to the station house officer of Shahbad Dairy police station, under whose jurisdiction part of the deployment fell.(Sanjeev Verma/HT File Photo for representation) Singh had visited the temple to personally review security measures that had been put in place in view of Janmashtami celebrations, which attract thousands of devotees every year. Security around temples and religious places was intensified across the city as large gatherings were expected, a senior police officer said. "During his inspection, the commissioner noticed that at one of the crucial points in the temple premises, no security personnel were deployed. This raised serious concerns regarding the overall preparedness and vigilance of the staff on duty," the officer said. The police chief immediately directed stern action, ordering the suspension of eight personnel for dereliction of duty. He also issued a strict warning to the station house officer of Shahbad Dairy police station, under whose jurisdiction part of the deployment fell. Officials said the suspended personnel include inspectors and sub-inspectors who had been assigned to oversee the temple security arrangements. Their absence from designated points was viewed as a grave lapse, especially given the heightened security advisories for Janmashtami. Senior officials added that the commissioner has asked all district police commissioners to personally monitor arrangements at sensitive religious sites and ensure that personnel remain alert and visible. Singh has said that any negligence in security, particularly during major festivals, will not be tolerated. The Delhi Police has been on high alert across the capital since last week, with security stepped up at temples, marketplaces, transport hubs and other crowded areas to prevent any untoward incident during the festive period. Meanwhile, additional personnel have been deployed at the ISKCON temple to manage the heavy footfall of devotees, and senior officers are supervising the situation on the ground, officials said.

A large number of devotees gathered at midnight prayers to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna at the ISKCON Temple in West Bengal's Kolkata. Similarly, devotees performed rituals to the idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha during the Janmashtami at ISKCON temple in Guwahati. Similarly, in Manipur's Imphal, devotees thronged the Shree Shree Govindajee Temple to offer prayers and participate in cultural programmes marking the birth of Lord Krishna. Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad, is celebrated with special fervour in Mathura, his birthplace, and in Vrindavan, where he spent his childhood. Across India and beyond, the festival was observed with devotion, joy, and vibrant traditions.
