No tsunami threat to Hawaii from 7-magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kuril Islands, officials say
Oahu Emergency Management confirmed the quake posed no danger to Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning System also reported that no tsunami alert had been issued.
The US Geological Survey put it at magnitude 7 while the German Research Center for Geosciences measured the quake at 6.7 magnitude, initially reporting 6.35, with a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).
The quake comes just days after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the same region triggered tsunami alerts as far away as Japan, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, and Chile.
That event was followed by rare volcanic activity in Kamchatka, including the first confirmed eruption of the Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years, which scientists believe may have been linked to the earlier quake.

Tropical Storm Henriette forms in the Pacific as Storm Dexter moves on
A tropical storm formed in the Pacific Ocean on Monday, just as another began heading away from the U.S. Tropical Storm Henriette, which developed at around 5 p.m. in the eastern Pacific, was centered some 985 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Henriette has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was moving to the west-northwest at around 15 mph, according to the advisory. Weather maps show the tropical storm edging over 2,200 miles east-southeast of Hilo in Hawaii. Forecasters have not issued coastal watches or warnings to land yet, but stressed Henriette is expected to strengthen over the next couple of days as it moves over the central east Pacific. 'Some slight strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, followed by gradual weakening,' forecasters said. Dexter became a tropical storm on Saturday night. As of late Monday, it was stirring up in the Atlantic Ocean about 345 miles north of Bermuda, the NOAA said. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph on Monday and was moving northeast. Forecasters expected it to continue moving away from the U.S. over the course of the week before being downgraded to a remnant system by the weekend. However, they warned that the tropical storm could re-strengthen in a couple of days as Dexter 'becomes an extratropical cyclone.' Dexter is the fourth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Henriette is the eighth named storm of this year's eastern North Pacific hurricane season. At the weekend, Hurricane Gil was churning in the eastern Pacific Ocean but did not threaten and decreased in strength Sunday, forecasters said. Gil had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph. With warmer-than-normal ocean waters, forecasters are expecting yet another unusually busy hurricane season for the Atlantic. Last year was the third-costliest season on record, as it spawned killer storms Beryl, Helene, and Milton.

Maui firefighters battle blaze near area of devastating Lahaina wildfires two years ago
Nearly two years to the day since devastating wildfires that killed more than 100 people and left thousands homeless the Hawaiian island of Maui is fighting another blaze in roughly the same location. The Maui Emergency Management Agency said on Monday that firefighters were "slowly containing" a brush fire in the hills above Ka'anapali, about two miles north of the deadly 2023 Lahaina wildfire. The Honoapiilani Highway was closed for about two and a half hours on Monday afternoon while helicopters drew water from the ocean to dump on the fire, officials said. "This is an emergency evacuation order. Leave immediately," the agency told Ka'anapali residents at around 1.48 p.m. local time. "Do not delay. Evacuate now and drive away from fire. Smoke and debris may be hazardous." In under an hour the evacuation order was lifted after firefighters succeeded in stopping the blaze from spreading any further. The wildfire that broke out in the same area on August 8, 2023, was the country's fifth deadliest such event on record, tearing through and almost destroying the historical town of Lahaina. After five months, more than 6,000 people on the island were without permanent long-term shelter with the American Red Cross housing displaced residents in empty rooms in hotels and condos. The tragedy , while a later investigative report . But now officials say things have changed. 'We're all more aware,' Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen told Maui Now last week. "I think we're more on guard. I think we probably all do a better job of taking care of each other, helping each other." The Maui Fire Department's total budget has grown from $60 million to $70m, with another $190m for housing assistance, recovery, repairs, and disaster mitigation. More firefighters and support staff have been hired, as well as more inspectors to check on potential fire hazards. New job roles have also been created to help relieve some of the demand on fire battalion commanders. More emergency vehicles have been ordered, and existing ones have been upgraded with thermal imaging devices. There are also more weather stations and cameras, and a new electricity plan that calls for power lines to be shut down when the risk of fire is particularly high.
