Ranking Georgia football's 2025 home games from worst to first

USA Today22-06-2025
The Georgia Bulldogs have a great home schedule for the 2025 season after having a pretty pedestrian home slate in 2024. Georgia's top home games are against Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas.
Georgia fans have a lot to of interesting games to look forward to in 2025. The Bulldogs play three non-Power Four opponents and four SEC foes at home. Georgia enters the 2025 college football season on a 31 game home winning streak, which is the longest in the country. Georgia's last home loss came to the South Carolina Gamecocks in double overtime on Oct. 12, 2019.
Since Georgia's last home loss, the Bulldogs have won two SEC championships and two national championships. However, Georgia will have a tough time going undefeated at home in 2025.
Ranking Georgia football's 2025 home games from worst to best
7. Austin Peay Governors
Austin Peay is Georgia's only Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent this fall. The Governors lost to Georgia 45-0 in Athens back in 2018. There's no reason to think this game will be competitive.
With a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff, Georgia fans in attendance will likely be battling the heat. Austin Peay is Georgia's second straight non-Power Four opponent to open the season, but doe not come with the excitement of the season opener. Fans tuning in on TV may not like the channel selection for this one either.
Date: Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. (all times listed at ET)TV: ESPN+/SEC Network+
6. Charlotte 49ers
The Charlotte 49ers have just one bowl appearance in their short school history (since 2015). The 49ers play in the American conference and likely won't be competitive with Georgia, but it will be UGA's last home game of the season, so it will be celebration for Georgia's senior class.
As an added bonus, we like the 12:45 p.m. kickoff time for two reasons. First of all, Georgia plays Georgia Tech on Friday, so it gives the Bulldogs a bit of extra rest. Secondly, Georgia fans will be able to get some sunlight on what is likely to be a cool November day.
Date: Nov. 22 at 12:45 p.m.TV: SEC Network
5. Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall is the best of Georgia's three non-Power Four opponents this season. Georgia plays Marshall in the season opener, so it is must-watch action for Bulldog fans to see how the 2025 edition of UGA looks.
Marshall won at Notre Dame back in 2022 under current head coach Charles Huff. The Thundering Herd are coming off a strong 10-3 season where they won the Sun Belt Conference championship. However, Marshall opted out of the Independence Bowl after too many players entered the transfer portal. Marshall is capable of making things interesting with Georgia in Week 1.
Date: Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m.TV: ESPN
4. Kentucky Wildcats
Now we're getting into the good games. Georgia plays Kentucky in their second SEC home game of the season. Georgia plays the Wildcats a week after Alabama, so the Bulldogs could be dealing with a big game hangover. Kentucky always smells like a trap for Georgia and 2025 is no different.
Kentucky has given Georgia a lot of trouble over the years, but Georgia has won 15 straight games over the Wildcats. Georgia fans should expect another physical, low-scoring battle against the Wildcats.
Date: Oct. 4 at noonTV: ESPN or ABC
3. Ole Miss Rebels
Georgia fell at Ole Miss 28-10 last season after dominating the Rebels in Athens during the a convincing 52-17 win in 2023. Ole Miss back up quarterback Austin Simmons shredded the Georgia defense on one drive after Jaxson Dart briefly left in the 2024 matchup. Simmons is expected to start for coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels in 2024.
Georgia-Ole Miss should be a very entertaining game. Both teams will look very different than their 2024 versions as both teams had at least eight players picked (Ole Miss 8, Georgia 13) in the 2025 NFL draft.
Date: Oct. 18 at flex kickoff time (afternoon or night)TV: To be determined
2. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Alabama game is technically Georgia's only scheduled home night game of the season (both Texas and Ole Miss are flex games), but we'd be surprised if the Bulldogs don't get at least two night home games. Last season, Alabama beat Georgia 41-34 after the Bulldogs mounted a furious comeback.
The 2025 edition of Georgia-Alabama will feature two new quarterbacks and no Nick Saban, but the Dawgs and Crimson Tide are still two of the top programs in college football. Both schools are looking to make a name for themselves in 2025 and as usual a lot will be on the line when Georgia and Alabama meet.
Georgia and Alabama have combined to win five of 11 national championships during the College Football Playoff era (they faced off in two national title games during this time span) and 10 of the last 11 SEC championships (they met in three of those 10 SEC championship games).
Date: Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. TV: ABC
1. Texas Longhorns
Arch Manning and Texas will travel to Athens for the first ever time as a member of the SEC. Texas is projected to be the preseason No. 1 team. The Longhorns played Georgia twice in 2024 with the Dawgs winning both meetings including the 2024 SEC championship. Both teams are expected to contend for the national championship and the winner of the Georgia-Texas game could clinch a berth in the SEC championship.
The Georgia-Texas game has a little more intrigue than the Georgia-Alabama game because Georgia has never played Texas in Sanford Stadium and because it is later in the season. The Georgia-Texas game could also effectively eliminate the loser from the College Football Playoff depending on how the season shakes out.
If we could only go to one UGA home game this season, then we'd pick the Georgia-Texas game.
Date: Nov. 15 at flex kickoff time (afternoon or night)TV: To be determined

Frances Tiafoe seems to love this part of the tennis calendar. Tiafoe's 2025 campaign has been a mixed bag overall, but he had a similar output the last couple of years before peaking during the late summer. Tiafoe is a +110 underdog against Holger Rune in the Round of 16 in Cincinnati on Wednesday. ATP Cincinnati: Tiafoe vs. Rune odds, prediction Player Odds Frances Tiafoe +110 Holger Rune -138 Odds via bet365 Tiafoe has turned into one of the most watchable players on the ATP Tour thanks to his aggressive style and athletic ability. He's got plenty of power, but the Maryland native also has a deft touch at the net and is a creative shot-maker. It's hard to profile his game because he can do so many things well when he is clicking. It shouldn't be a surprise that Tiafoe has figured out how to get his game working at this time of year, since he's from the Mid-Atlantic and will not be a stranger to the hot, humid conditions in the States in August. Rune, meanwhile, seemingly runs into problems in physical matches, especially in challenging conditions. What could go wrong? The Athletic looks at Alabama football's worst-case scenario in 2025

The Alabama Crimson Tide are breaking in a new quarterback heading into the 2025 college football season Maybe "new" isn't the first word that comes to mind for Ty Simpson, the redshirt junior and former five-star recruit who was officially named Alabama's starter on Monday. Simpson has been with the program since 2022, but his next snap under center will be his first as a starter after backing up Jalen Milroe for two seasons. In recent years, Alabama has had a fairly good run of success when it comes to first-year starting quarterbacks. Milroe's first full season, which included a bizarre Week 3 benching in the Crimson Tide's ugly 17-3 win at South Florida, saw him lead Alabama to 10 straight wins, an SEC championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Young's first season under center in 2021 saw him win the Heisman Trophy and guide Alabama to the SEC title and a berth in the national championship game against Georgia. A year earlier, Mac Jones led a blistering Crimson Tide offense to a perfect 13-0 season and the program's sixth title under Nick Saban. And Tua Tagovailoa became a star even before his first start in 2018 after leading Alabama to a thrilling overtime win over Georgia for the national championship eight months earlier. He won his first 14 starts and guided Alabama to a fourth straight national championship game (the Tide were routed by Clemson, 44-16, in that one). If we go all the way back to 2009, Greg McElroy, A.J. McCarron, Blake Sims, Jake Coker and Jalen Hurts all did fairly well for themselves in their first year as starting quarterbacks. McElroy, McCarron and Coker won national titles, and Hurts finished as runner-up to Deshaun Watson and Clemson. Now that Simpson has officially been named Alabama's starter for its season opener at Florida State on Aug. 30, veteran college football reporter Ralph Russo of The Athletic has a question: What could go wrong? Russo took a look at every team (subscription required) ranked in the top 25 of Monday's preseason AP poll and outlined the worst-case scenario for each one in 2025. For No. 8 Alabama, he brought back an old adage when it comes to quarterback competitions. "If the old saying about having multiple quarterbacks means you have none, Kalen DeBoer's second season in Tuscaloosa could be similar to his first," Russo stated. There are never any guarantees with first-year starting quarterbacks, but with Simpson beating out five-star freshman Keelon Russell and sophomore Austin Mack to start Week 1, I'm willing to trust DeBoer and the head coach's longtime offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. If Alabama's recent past with first-year starters under center is any indication, and DeBoer and Grubb are able to replicate their success from Washington with a different passer they helped improve (Michael Penix), the Crimson Tide are as well-equipped as any team when it comes to breaking in a new quarterback. Clark Atlanta University mourns death of athletics trailblazer

Clark Atlanta University is mourning the death of Raymond 'Tweet' Williams, a trailblazer of CAU athletics, who died on Monday at age 99. His connection to the school goes all the way back to the age of 11, at what was then known as Clark College in Southwest Atlanta. 'When they started to practice for football, I would go up there to watch them. So, they decided that since I was there every day, they made me into the water boy,' Raymond told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen last year. In the 1940s, he made the team and decades later was named the first Athletic Director at what is now Clark Atlanta University. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] He also spent time as a coach, assistant principal, and principal for various schools in the Atlanta Public School system. Raymond said he got the nickname 'Tweet' back in the day as a student athlete. He said he had skinny bird legs, so teammates called him 'Tweet Tweet' and everybody called him that from then on. Atlanta City Councilmember Byron Amos shared the following statement after Williams' death: 'Atlanta is mourning the loss of a man who was not only a Hall of Fame athlete in his own right, but also a mentor to generations of youth athletes across the city. As a fellow graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and a Clark Atlanta University alumna, Williams used his All-American and All-SIAC honoree athletic talent and skills to give back to his community. He established Clark Atlanta Athletic Booster Association and became a successful football coach at Clark Atlanta University, Turner High School, Frederick Douglass High School, and Northside High School. His career as an athletic educator and coach has made him an invaluable mentor to Atlanta's youth athletes.'
