Revoke licences, not just fine drivers, Selangor Sultan says after fatal FRU crash in Perak
SHAH ALAM, May 15 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has urged the government to take serious heed of road accidents, particularly those involving heavy vehicles.
In a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, His Royal Highness said that in view of the increasing number of accidents and similar tragedies, firmer and more immediate action must be taken by the authorities to address the matter.
The Ruler expressed that if any party is found guilty and responsible for fatal accidents or incidents causing serious injuries, the drivers and company owners of heavy vehicles involved should not only be fined or imprisoned, but their driving licences should also be revoked.
He said that such action would serve as a lesson to other drivers to be more cautious and to give undivided attention while driving.
In the same post, the monarch and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Hajah Norashikin, conveyed their condolences to the families of the nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who perished in the horrific accident in Teluk Intan, Perak, on Tuesday.
Their Royal Highnesses also expressed sadness and sorrow over the heartbreaking tragedy that befell all the victims involved.
In the 8 am incident on Tuesday, nine FRU personnel were killed and eight others injured after the truck they were travelling in collided with a lorry carrying a load of stones at the junction of Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan.
Sultan Sharafuddin further urged companies operating lorries, buses and heavy vehicles to conduct strict evaluations in selecting drivers and assistants, and reminded all parties not to take lightly matters that could lead to negligence such as vehicle condition and driver qualifications.
'His Royal Highness hopes and prays that such tragic accidents will no longer occur, especially those involving the loss of innocent lives, particularly among those serving for the nation's peace,' the post read. — Bernama

Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.

13 foreigners nabbed for running illegal homestay operation in KL

(Immigration Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Thirteen foreigners involved in an illegal homestay operation were detained by immigration officials during a raid in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Immigration deputy director-general (management) Ismail Mokhtar said the raid at Jalan Ipoh and Jalan Sultan Ismail followed two weeks of surveillance and public tip-offs, Bernama reported. 'These foreigners rented local properties and managed bookings online, with rental rates ranging from RM80 to RM400 per night depending on room size. The operation is believed to have been running for about a year,' he said. Authorities also seized tenancy agreements, passports (four Bangladeshi, one Indonesian, and one Indian), 48 room access cards, a laptop, three mobile phones, guest records, RM74,000 in cash and US$2,160. The 13 people arrested comprised nine men and one woman from Bangladesh, one Indonesian man, and one woman each from India and the Philippines. They are aged between 24 and 40. All 13 were taken to the immigration headquarters in Putrajaya for further action. Ismail added that six Malaysians and one Bangladeshi man were issued notices to assist with the investigation.

Daim's widow to challenge Ilham Tower seizure in court

(Website pic) PETALING JAYA : The widow of the late former finance minister Daim Zainuddin will challenge the seizure of Ilham Tower in court. In a statement, Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal, who are acting on behalf of Naimah Khalid, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) repeated seizure of the Kuala Lumpur city centre landmark was 'pure harassment'. 'This is vindictive, unlawful and a blatant abuse of power by MACC. This is contrary to the rule of law; it is the law of the jungle,' they said. This is the anti-graft agency's second time seizing the tower on Jalan Binjai after making a similar move on Dec 21, 2023. In a strongly worded statement, the lawyers pointed out that MACC had already seized Ilham Tower previously, raising doubts over the justification for taking the same action again. Questioning whether MACC was 'playing musical chairs with the law', they stressed that no corruption charges have been brought against Daim despite repeated allegations and insinuations by both Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki. 'Having failed to produce any charges, they are now targeting our client with yet another seizure,' they said. 'They want to keep seizing our client's property even though there's no evidence of corruption. 'We will, on behalf of our client, challenge the seizure of Ilham Tower in court immediately.' Azam previously said the commission was considering seizing over RM2 billion in undeclared assets linked to Daim, his family and proxies. Eight new investigation papers were opened after receiving fresh information from foreign agencies. On Tuesday, MACC said it had obtained a court order to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. According to MACC, investigations revealed that the assets were linked to suspected offences under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. In January last year, Daim claimed trial to a charge of failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by MACC. He was accused of not disclosing his ownership of 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury cars. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. She is accused of failing to declare her ownership in various companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, and two vehicles. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him.
