A man opened fire outside the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Friday, leaving bullet impacts in windows across the sprawling campus and killing a police officer before he was found dead in a nearby building, authorities said.
The attack, which unfolded near the neighboring Emory University campus, prompted a massive law enforcement response to one of the nation's most prominent public health institutions, but no one else was reported to be injured.

Images shared by employees showed multiple CDC buildings with bullet-pocked windows, underscoring the breadth of the damage to a site where thousands of scientists and staff work on critical disease research.
The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC campus and died at the scene, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said. He added that 'we do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted.'
The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
The gunman's motive is still unknown this early in the investigation, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said.
Police declined to name the officer who was killed, but DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson struck at the emotions of the loss.
'This evening, there is a wife without a husband. There are three children, one unborn, without a father,' Cochran-Johnson said.
When the shooting kicked off, staff at a nearby restaurant hunkered down and said they heard a string of gunshots. 'It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other,' said Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant.
She then saw people running past her business. Two people paused to warn them of a shooter nearby.
When Anurag Mehta and his wife heard about the shooting, they tried to get to their 3-year-old son in a preschool near the CDC, but they were unable to approach.
'I was thinking that when I left for work this morning, was that the last time I saw my son?' said Mehta, who later learned his son was safe.
The CDC and Emory's main campus are surrounded by affluent wooded neighborhoods in northeast Atlanta. All three institutions line up along Clifton Road. The area is hard to access, and notoriously traffic-choked, but on Friday few cars were in evidence as a warning siren blared.
Gov. Brian Kemp praised the efforts of first responders.
'Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians,' Kemp said, referring to the shooting at Fort Stewart as well as the CDC campus. 'Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.'

Charges laid in connection to fatal officer-involved shooting in Deschambault Lake

Two people have been charged in connection with an incident in Deschambault Lake, Sask. that led to a fatal officer-involved shooting on Friday. According to an update sent by Saskatchewan RCMP on Saturday afternoon, the incident happened around 8:41 a.m., on Aug. 8, after two Deschambault Lake RCMP officers encountered five individuals in a wooded area near the community. 'During the course of the encounter, a confrontation occurred between the officers and one of the five people, an adult male from Deschambault Lake. The two responding police officers discharged their firearms and the adult male was struck,' RCMP said in the release. RCMP say officers provided initial medical assistance to the man, but he died at the scene. His family has been notified. No police officers were physically injured. Officers then located a gun and several replica firearms, which were seized at the scene, and arrested four other people. Two were released without charges. Earl Ballantyne, 31, from Pelican Narrows has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon. Ballantyne was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a separate Deschambault Lake RCMP investigation. Sherri Custer, 20, from Deschambault Lake has been charged with breach of an undertaking related to the same investigation. Police say both suspects will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court via CCTV on Monday. RCMP say they notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Saskatchewan RCMP's Prince Albert, North Battleford and Saskatoon Provincial General Investigation Sections are investigating the initial call for service received by Deschambault Lake RCMP. According to RCMP, there will continue to be an increased police presence in Deschambault Lake in relation to these ongoing investigations. RCMP say they cannot provide any additional information at this time due to the ongoing SIRT investigation.

Shopkeeper randomly stabbed in Abbotsford, police say

The scene of a Saturday, Aug. 9, stabbing is seen in this image handed out by the Abbotsford Police Department. An Abbotsford shopkeeper was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed Saturday morning, according to police. In a statement, the Abbotsford Police Department said officers were called to a strip mall at the intersection of Townline and Maclure roads just before 9:45 a.m. 'Upon arrival, first responders located the victim—the business owner—who had sustained life-threatening injuries following an altercation with an unknown individual attempting to steal from the premises,' police wrote. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived. Meanwhile, the victim was taken to a Vancouver-area trauma hospital. A few minutes later, police say they found the suspect, a 40-year-old man, in the backyard of a nearby home. He remains in custody. According to police, the suspect was on statutory release from a previous violent conviction, which means he had been released with supervision as required by law after serving two-thirds of a sentence. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has video from the area between 9:15 a.m. and 10 a.m. is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225.

Man found dead in western Quebec lake

A 72-year-old man has died after apparently drowning in a western Quebec lake, local police say. First responders were called to McGregor Lake in Val-des-Monts, Que. at around 11 p.m. Friday after getting an emergency call, according to MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police. Police told Radio-Canada that while the cause of the man's death has not been confirmed, it does not appear to have been suicide or a case of foul play. It's at least the 19th known death to have taken place on local waterways this year.
