Edible Oil To Get Cheaper Soon As Govt Cuts Basic Customs Duty To 10%; Details Here

News18a day ago

The Centre reduced the basic customs duty on crude palm, soybean, and sunflower oils from 20% to 10%, lowering the total import duty to 16.5% to cut cooking oil prices.
In a major decision aimed at reducing domestic cooking oil prices and boosting local processing, the Centre has slashed the basic customs duty on crude palm oil, crude soyabean oil, and crude sunflower oil from 20% to 10%. The decision, effective immediately, is expected to ease retail inflation and reinvigorate India's vegetable oil refining industry.
A notification issued by the finance ministry on Friday confirmed the revision, stating that the total effective import duty on these three crude oils now stands at 16.5%, including surcharge and cess, down from 27.5%.
The basic customs duty on refined oil remains unchanged at 32.5%. Currently, the effective duty on refined oils is 35.75%.
The move comes at a critical time, as India — the world's largest importer of edible oils — imported 159.6 lakh tonnes of edible oils valued at Rs 1.32 lakh crore during the 2023–24 oil marketing year (November–October). India meets over 50% of its edible oil needs through imports, with palm oil sourced from Malaysia and Indonesia, and soyabean oil primarily from Brazil and Argentina.
advetisement
This significant gap between crude and refined oil duties has been a long-standing demand of industry bodies like SEA and the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA), who argue that the influx of cheaper refined oils under trade agreements has harmed domestic refiners.
'The government's decision to increase the duty differential between crude and refined oils from 8.25% to 19.25% is a bold and timely move. It will discourage imports of refined palmolein and shift demand back to crude palm oil, thereby revitalising the domestic refining sector," said Sanjeev Asthana, president of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA).
Solvent Extractors Association of India's (SEA) executive director B V Mehta said the basic custom duty on crude palm oil, crude soyabean oil and crude sunflower oil has been reduced to 10 per cent from the earlier 20 per cent.
Sudhakar Desai, president of IVPA, said, 'We thank the government for accepting the IVPA recommendation to increase the duty differential between crude and refined edible oils to 19.25%. This is a significantly bold move towards ensuring Make in India and also protecting the sector from the influx of refined oils causing capacity injury to the vegetable oil sector."
According to IVPA data, refined palm oil imports surged from 4.58 lakh metric tonnes during June-September 2024 to 8.24 lakh metric tonnes between October 2024 and February 2025 — accounting for nearly 30% of total palm oil imports. Much of this surge was attributed to zero-duty imports under SAFTA, which created trade distortions and undercut domestic processors.
The revision in import duties is expected to bring immediate relief to consumers through reduced prices of packaged cooking oils, while simultaneously strengthening domestic refining capacities and ensuring fair returns for Indian oilseed farmers.

Delhi: NDMC to build 27-metre clock tower at Talkatora roundabout

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will construct a clock tower at the Talkatora roundabout as a grand architectural landmark, Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said on Sunday. He said that the clock tower would be approximately 27 metre tall and feature a 2-meter clock. Chahal stated that the project has received approval from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) and aims to establish a distinct identity within Lutyens' Delhi. The NDMC Vice Chairman added that most municipal bodies across the country have iconic clock towers as their symbols, and now NDMC will also develop such a grand architectural landmark. The structure will have an octagonal design, constructed using RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete), and will be adorned with a layer of clay bricks. The surrounding area will feature granite flooring, steel railings, and marble decorations. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.3 crore, and the target is to complete construction by December 2025. Chahal said: 'Clock towers are not just timekeeping devices; they are also symbols of a city's identity, heritage, and architectural significance. Historically, they have played a vital role in providing public time information.' This clock tower will not only serve as a new attraction for Lutyens' Delhi but also mark the entry point into the NDMC area from nearby MCD regions such as Rajendra Nagar and Karol Bagh, he said. The tower will include internal stairs to facilitate maintenance and repairs. For safety, railings will be installed around the tower, and the base will be decorated with marble, he said. Chahal added that the project is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Viksit Bharat @2047" and reflects the national mission of beautifying Indian cities and preserving cultural heritage. This grand architectural structure in the NDMC area will not only provide timekeeping but also stand as a symbol of national pride, cultural identity, and urban elegance, he said.

Udayamperoor panchayat plans to add new assets to register

Kochi: Udayamperoor panchayat, with its 20 wards, is set to add 56 roads, a library and fish landing centres to its asset register. It has invited responses from public, seeking objections, if any, to the move. Panchayat authorities said delay in including these assets in its register results in unavailability of funds for their restoration. Failure to declare gramin library in the assets register led to lapse of Rs 10 lakh allotted from MLA fund. "Failure to include roads in the register resulted in bad condition of roads. Govt can allot funds only if roads are entered in our assets register as public property," said panchayat vice-president Gopi S A. When Sebastian Paul was MP, AKG library was set up using his fund. It belongs to local body. However, it has not been included in the asset register. Earlier, Rs 10 lakh was allotted from MLA fund and we planned to set up a hall on the second floor of library building. But govt issued an order mandating that public properties should be included in asset register of the local body to utilize public money for developments. Following this, we cancelled the project. The latest move is to avoid such situations in future," he said.

India's ultra-rich population to grow fastest in world, up 50 per cent by 2028: Report

Representative AI image NEW DELHI: India is projected to witness the fastest growth in its ultra-high-net-worth individual (UHNWI) population globally, increasing by 50 per cent between 2023 and 2028, according to a report by McKinsey & Company and The Business of Fashion (BoF), as quoted by ANI. This anticipated surge aligns with a robust outlook for India's luxury market, which is expected to grow between 15 and 20 per cent in 2025. The report attributes this growth to structural and demographic shifts, along with expanding retail infrastructure in tier-one cities. Recent developments such as the opening of Jio World Plaza and the planned entry of Galeries Lafayette are expanding luxury retail footprints in major urban centres. Meanwhile, the government has introduced new import taxes on luxury goods priced above Rs 700,000 (approximately USD 8,400) to encourage domestic spending—despite the prevailing 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on luxury items. In comparison, Japan- the second-largest market for UHNWIs in Asia- is forecast to see its wealthy population grow by over 12 per cent from 2023 to 2028. Japan's luxury sector is expected to grow by 6 to 10 per cent in 2025, buoyed by strong domestic consumption and tourism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo India's broader economic ascent is also reinforcing this trend. Niti Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam recently confirmed that India has overtaken Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy, citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to the IMF's April 2025 World Economic Outlook, India's nominal GDP is projected to reach USD 4.187 trillion in FY2026, marginally ahead of Japan's estimated USD 4.186 trillion. Between 2019 and 2023, the global luxury industry recorded exceptional growth, with demand for personal luxury goods—including fashion, handbags, watches, and jewellery—driving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5 per cent. Luxury brands outperformed broader markets and achieved record profit margins during this period. However, 2025 has brought a notable slowdown across the sector. The report indicates a decline in luxury value creation for the first time since 2016 (excluding the pandemic-hit year of 2020), with several key growth drivers—including strong Chinese consumer demand—losing momentum. China, which had recorded over 18 per cent annual growth in the luxury segment between 2019 and 2023, is now experiencing economic headwinds that are weighing on global performance.
