SpaceX could soon offer Starlink satellite internet service on Saudi Arabia's flag carrier
Saudia, formerly known as Saudi Arabian Airlines, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, is reportedly in advanced talks with Elon Musk's SpaceX to provide Starlink satellite internet service onboard its flights. According to Bloomberg, Saudi is finalising a deal with SpaceX to roll out the Starlink internet service across its fleet of more than 140 aircraft. The Jeddah-based airline has flight operations across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Qatar Airways, another major carrier in the Middle East, has been offering Starlink satellite internet service onboard its flights since 2024. In fact, Qatar Airways was the first global airline to operate a Boeing 777 Starlink-equipped flight. Currently, over 40 of Qatar Airways's Boeing 777 aircraft have Starlink satellite internet connectivity. The airline is in the process of a full rollout of Starlink to its Boeing 777 and A350 fleets by the end of 2025. In May this year, Saudi Arabia had approved the use of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service for aviation and maritime shipping. According to Saudi officials, Starlink, which uses low Earth orbit satellites for broadband coverage, will be used to offer reliable connectivity for the aviation and maritime industries in remote areas. Musk also has deep business ties with Saudi Arabia, and both Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's private office and his Kingdom Holding Company have stakes in xAI.

Wi-Fi at Kolkata airport back after eight months
1 2 Kolkata: The city airport on Thursday reintroduced Wi-Fi for flyers in the passenger terminal after a gap of eight months. The move will bring relief to travellers, especially foreigners landing in Kolkata. Inaugurating the service on Thursday, airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria said wi-fi would not only be available to passengers with an active phone network but also to foreigners who did not have roaming cell coverage after reaching Kolkata. "Flyers will no longer face connectivity issues at the airport. The entire terminal — arrival and departure; domestic and international wing—will be under Wi-Fi coverage," he said. "It's a welcome change. Just last month, my niece came to Kolkata from London and in the absence of a Wi-Fi connection, she couldn't even contact us as we stood outside the airport to receive her. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Angola: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo She was also extremely upset with the lack of a basic facility like a Wi-Fi connection. Kolkata is a top-tier metro. It deserves an airport that reflects that. I am happy that the issue has finally been addressed," said Subhasree Majumdar, a Jadavpur resident. New Town resident Anjali Tiwari said her relatives visiting Kolkata from the US last month were surprised to learn there was no Wi-Fi at Kolkata airport. "I am glad that Wi-Fi has been provided and hope the speed is on par with other international airports," she said. An airport official said the help desks will be available before the exit points at the arrival level in both domestic and international wings of the terminal. In the international wing, the desk will be positioned between exit gates 4 and 5 after the immigration and Customs channels. "Once the traveller logs into the free Wi-Fi after registering on the NSCBI Airport portal through either OTP mode via SMS or entering the voucher code obtained from the help desk, he or she can surf the Internet or access net-based apps, including WhatsApp, to make a call to a driver or book a cab using Uber, Ola or Yatri Sathi," the official explained. In future, the airport has plans to also introduce WhatsApp-based authentication. Passengers will, however, require an active Internet connection to access this. Tour operators and travel agents who bring foreign tourists to India, particularly around Durga Puja and Christmas, are delighted. Travel Agent Association of India chairman (East) Anjani Dhanuka and his counterpart at Travel Agents Federation of India Bilolaksha Das said Wi-Fi is a basic amenity that is of vital importance for international tourists who fly to a foreign shore. "Connectivity is important to contact the travel executive assigned to receive the tourist at the airport," said Dhanuka. "Once they are in the city, they can purchase prepaid local SIMs and get connected," added Das. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
