(AP) — San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said receiver Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension to start the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Shanahan said Wednesday on the team's flagship radio station KNBR that Robinson has been suspended pending an appeal after he pleaded no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. San Francisco opens the season with games at Seattle and New Orleans followed by a home game against Arizona. The NFL declined to comment on the suspension. Robinson said last week that he was 'anxious' waiting to hear the final verdict from the NFL. 'Just waiting on the outcome to see what happens with that," Robinson said. "I really don't know the timeframe. Waiting to hear from them, obviously. It's all up to whatever the league says.' The 49ers are counting on Robinson this season to bolster their receiver group that has been depleted following a trade of Deebo Samuel in the offseason and a knee injury that will sideline Brandon Aiyuk for at least the first month of the season. The 30-year-old Robinson had 31 catches for 505 yards and seven touchdowns last season for the Los Angeles Rams. The Niners have been dealing with several injuries at receiver with Jauan Jennings out for most of training camp with a calf injury, rookie Jordan Watkins out with a high ankle sprain and Jacob Cowing nursing a hamstring injury. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson will miss the first three games of the season. The NFL suspended Robinson for three games on Wednesday following his DUI arrest last November, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed. Robinson is expected to appeal the suspension. 'You can always appeal it, so we'll hope for the best on that, but that's what we are planning for.' Robinson was arrested in November on a DUI charge when he was still playing with the Los Angeles Rams. He was pulled over hours following a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles after officers said they saw him driving more than 100 miles per hour on a Los Angeles-area freeway. He was cited and then released. The Rams did not suspend him for his actions. Robinson later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor DUI. He signed a two-year, $9.5 million deal to join the 49ers in free agency. With the plea deal behind him and the case now closed, the punishment is something that many had expected to be coming down before the start of the 2025 campaign. The franchise struck a deal to land Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. In exchange, the teams will swap late-round draft picks in 2027. Moore had 244 yards and a touchdown on 21 catches during the 2023 season, his second with the Chiefs after they took him out of Western Michigan the year prior. Moore appeared in just six games last season and didn't make a catch, however, while being extremely limited with a long core muscle injury. Moore should provide some much needed depth for the 49ers, who are very limited at wide receiver to start the year. Star Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL injury in his right knee, though he's hopeful to be back on the field around Week 6. Jauan Jennings is dealing with a calf injury amid his push for a new deal, and rookie wide receiver Jordan Watkins is recovering from a sprained ankle. The 49ers — who went 6-11 and missed the playoffs last season, just a year removed from their run to the Super Bowl — will open their season on Sept. 7 against the Seattle Seahawks.

If that is the case, he will miss this weekend's first home match of the season against Elche, as well as the trip to Alaves seven days later – and it could also mean that Luis de la Fuente avoids calling him up for Spain's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Türkiye. Atleti do have cover for Baena, so it is unlikely that he is rushed back for the trip to Alaves – which he is currently touch-and-go for. The options that Simeone has to replace him include Antoine Griezmann, Alexander Sorloth and Conor Gallagher.
