Bengaluru: Namma Metro Breaks Record As Yellow Line Debut Draws Over 10 Lakh Commuters
BMRCL officials revealed they had initially estimated a modest turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 commuters for the Yellow Line's opening day.
Karnataka Chief Minister on Wednesday announced that Namma Metro set a new 'single day' record with 10.48 lakh people travelling on the network a day after the Yellow Line was launched.
The record was set on August 11, said Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture floated by the Government of India and the Karnataka government, to build, operate and expand the Namma Metro network.
Sources from BMRCL said the agency had only expected a turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 people as there are only three train sets. But the opening day saw three times more people using the Yellow Line.
'With 4,51,816 people travelling on the Purple Line, 2,91,677 on the Green Line, 52,215 on the Yellow Line and 2,52,323 on the Interchange, Namma Metro has now become the lifeline of transportation for Bengaluru residents," wrote the CM in microblogging site X, formerly Twitter.
'I request the public to support our efforts to alleviate traffic congestion by making more use of mass transit such as the metro," he added.

Bengaluru Metro: Good news for commuters, 4th Yellow Line train to start soon as...; check details inside
(File) Bengaluru Metro: In some great news for commuters on the Bengaluru Metro, aka the Namma Metro network, a fourth train will start operations soon 0n the Namma Metro Yellow Line, as the first of six coaches for the trainset has arrived in the Karnataka capital from Kolkata, while the remaining five coaches are expected to arrive in the next couple of days. When will Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line get its fourth train? According to B L Yashavanth Chavan, Chief Public Relations Officer, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), after their arrival, all six coaches will be coupled to form a train at the Hebbagodi depot. After static testing, the train will ply on the Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line, he said. The fourth train will undergo at least two weeks of testing on the mainline at night before entering passenger service by early September, according to another senior official. Who built the trainsets? The coaches for the new Yellow Line train were manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), under a sub-contract with China's state-owned CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, officials said. The BMRCL awarded TRSL a Rs 1,578-crore contract in December 2019 to deliver 36 trainsets, 15 for the Yellow Line and 21 for the Purple and Green lines, within 173 weeks. But the order was delayed as CRCC could not find an Indian partner for a long time, and later faced visa troubles for bringing in its engineers from China. A prototype train for the Yellow Line was delivered by CRRC in February 2024, while TSRL delivered two more trainsets this year. All three trains are currently operation in the 19.15-km long Yellow Line, which opened on August 11 with a 25-minute frequency.

From FASTag Fines To E-Challans: MoRTH Pushes For Aadhaar-Linked Phones For Licences, Vehicles
Last Updated: The push for updated contact details also comes as the government tightens rules around unpaid tolls, which, like pending e-challans, involve enforcement gaps and delayed recovery Existing driving licence holders and vehicle owners have been requested by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to update and confirm their mobile phone numbers through the Aadhaar authentication process. This initiative accompanies a draft amendment aimed at addressing issues related to the non-payment of tolls due to FASTag problems. This week, several users received SMS alerts from MoRTH urging them to update their mobile numbers via the Parivahan portal at The message asks all vehicle owners to add, update, and confirm the mobile numbers for their registered vehicles through Aadhaar authentication. A separate text was sent regarding driving licences, requesting all licence holders to update and confirm their mobile numbers through Aadhaar authentication. Speaking to News18, a ministry official said, 'This is a regular process. No new policy decision." Why the Message Was Sent In the July 2025 office memorandum, the ministry noted that many vehicle owners and DL holders have not updated their mobile details in the VAHAN and Sarathi databases. 'As a result, important service-related alerts, messages, and statutory notices are not reaching the intended recipients, hindering timely compliance and necessary action," it reads. To address this, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been instructed to implement changes across the Transport Portal and associated databases, ensuring secure storage and verification of mobile numbers along with accurate and timely dissemination of information. While the ministry did not explicitly connect it, between January 2017 and March 2025, more than 32 crore challans were issued in the country. Out of these, Rs 46,783 crore worth of challans were issued, but only Rs 17,939 crore were paid, leaving nearly Rs 30,000 crore pending. The lack of communication channels makes it difficult for the ministry to hold people accountable. A case is pending in the Supreme Court for the timely recovery of pending e-challans and to recommend the 'one nation, one e-challan system" to streamline interstate enforcement and payments. Pending Toll Payments The push for updated contact details also comes as the government tightens rules around unpaid tolls, which, like pending e-challans, involve enforcement gaps and delayed recovery. Last month, the ministry proposed an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The draft rules, issued on July 11 with a 30-day suggestion period, defined unpaid user fees as those not collected due to issues like a missing or non-functional FASTag—even if the vehicle's passage was recorded electronically and an electronic notice issued. The draft suggests that such vehicles will not be allowed to deposit vehicle tax, transfer registration, issue a no-objection certificate (NOC), or change registration series until the unpaid user fee is cleared. 'The insurer must verify this through the National Register of Motor Vehicles before issuing insurance," the draft said. It also stated that the renewal of the certificate of registration will be blocked until the unpaid user fee is paid. Those not paying the fee will also not get a duplicate registration certificate until the unpaid user fee is cleared. Although issued just days apart, a ministry official said they are connected because, for the rule change, MoRTH will need phone details to connect and issue e-notices to vehicle owners. top videos View all 'If the draft amendments take effect, timely mobile number updates could become critical for vehicle owners, not only to receive e-challan and toll notices but also to avoid disruptions in essential services like registration renewal, insurance issuance, and ownership transfer," the official told News18. With challan recovery and toll enforcement set to go digital, a missed mobile update could soon mean more than just missed messages—it could affect your ability to drive or keep your vehicle on the road. ‘One frame, four Namma Metro trains' footage goes viral
Bengaluru: While Namma Metro Yellow Line is in the spotlight for linking city's tech corridor, one video has stolen the show by racking up lakhs of views and occupying the centre stage of Metro train-related discussion. Shot by entrepreneur and Jayanagar resident Srihari Karanth, the aerial drone footage captures a breathtaking scene at the RV Road Interchange station, where two Yellow Line and two Green Line trains appear in the same frame, traversing two intersecting Metro corridors simultaneously. This rare and synchronised moment, captured by him after a two-hour wait, evoked positive comments from citizens and corporate honchos too. Speaking to TOI, Karanth, who is also a drone content creator, said: "When I posted an aerial shot capturing the movement of four trains at the end of RV Road, I did not expect it to receive such a huge response. The video was widely appreciated by users across social media. I am truly delighted. In the run-up to the Yellow Line's opening, BMRCL was operating pre-commissioning trial runs, and I filmed this before the launch. Spotting two trains on the Green Line is common, catching three — one from Yellow Line and two from Green Line — was rare. Five days before the line opened, for two hours in the evening, I had drone in the air. Two batteries drained, but with the third, we finally captured the movement of four trains heading in different directions. I feel I was lucky." A Metro enthusiast, Karanth said the timing of posting the video also played a key role as Bengalureans were eagerly anticipating the opening of the Yellow Line. RV Road Interchange is surrounded by lush green parks on either side of the road, and Yellow Line Metro traverses over Green Line Metro at the end of the road towards Ragigudda. Biocon executive chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, reacting to the video footage on 'X', said: "Isn't that a beautiful shot dotting Bengaluru's urban mobility landscape with sustainable and green alternatives." Karanth said: "During my free time, I spend time capturing aerial videos using drone. In the past, I documented the progress of Yellow Line work and also the trial run. Barring this, aerial shots of tech parks, Metro line operations on Green Line, and others received a good response from people." In the past, stunning aerial shots of Shivanasamudra, tourist places in Tamil Nadu, and districts of Karnataka such as Chikkamagaluru and Udupi also went viral.
