Stephen Hendry puts Ronnie O'Sullivan second in top five players to watch

Metro01-07-2025
Stephen Hendry has called Ronnie O'Sullivan the greatest snooker player of all-time, but that doesn't mean he is his favourite to watch.
That is no criticism of the Rocket, with the Scot putting his fellow seven-time world champion second in his top five favourite players of all-time to watch.
Also in that top five are a great rival of Hendry in his pomp, the current world number one and a couple of players who are yet to turn their flamboyant styles into much silverware.
Talking through his favourite players to watch on WST's Snooker Club podcast, the legendary Whirlwind was first to be mentioned.
'Number five is Jimmy [White]. Not Jimmy now, but Jimmy in his prime,' said Hendry.
'Jimmy was my hero when I started playing. I used to record videos of him and try to copy some of the shots he was playing, some of the shots he used to play was basically what got me to fall in love with snooker, really. He was my hero.'
Next in line comes the 2019 world champion, the reigning world number one and the 30-time ranking event winner, Judd Trump.
'Number four I'm going to go Judd Trump,' said Hendry. 'Judd Trump is incredible to watch, he plays shots that no one else can play.
'The power, the naughty snooker at the end of frames and the imagination to think up these shots. What a break-builder, 107 centuries in a season!'
The 56-year-old then went for Jack Lisowski, a player still searching for his first ranking title, but is undoubtedly a delight to watch at the table.
Hendry explained: 'Number three I'm going to go Jack Lisowski. What a beautiful snooker player, like the mirror image of Ronnie, he's left-handed, Ronnie's right-handed. Very similar cue actions.
'I just love watching him play, what a talent, he's just incredible. Just waiting for the victories.'
Then came the Rocket, with Hendry saying: 'Number two, this could be controversial, Ronnie O'Sullivan.
'If Ronnie is in a tournament and I get my rota for commentating, I always hope to be on his matches.
'He's the greatest player of all-time. Break-building, cue ball control, if you don't like watching that then you don't like watching snooker. When he's on he plays the game perfectly, basically.'
At number one, ahead of the likes of O'Sullivan and Trump, is the current world number 46, Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Hendry knows from personal experience how good the 40-year-old is, having played him in 2021 and watched him knock in breaks of 136, 129, 107, 106, 100, 59, and 52 in a 6-1 loss.
'Thepchaiya Un-Nooh is my favourite player to watch,' said Hendry. 'Unbelievable talent. More Trending
'He beat me 6-1 once in the UK Championship qualifiers, he had five centuries and I don't think any of them took more than seven or eight minutes. The cue ball was on a string, it was absolute perfection.'
The man known as F1 for his speed around the table has just one ranking title to his name, the 2019 Snooker Shoot Out and has been to just one ranking semi in the last five seasons, which Hendry finds hard to believe.
'How he's where he's ranked in the world…talent isn't enough on its own to be successful and he proves it because he's got bucket loads of talent,' he said.
'I love watching him play. It's all-out attack, he refuses nothing. Incredible talent, incredible player, incredible speed.'

Five Celtic transfers that could be completed before final Champions League squad deadline

Despite naming their squad to UEFA two changes can be made before facing FC Kairat Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has made little secret of his demands for new recruits this summer. ‌ And with the countdown on to the Champions League play-off tie with Kairat Almaty time is rapidly running out to add new faces for the £40million shoot-out. ‌ The Glasgow giants will look to return to Europe's elite competition and the jackpot that comes with reaching the league phase. ‌ And while Celtic have already announced their squad the Hoops have the chance to add up to two players by next Tuesday before the first leg the following night - and remove two of the current crop. Despite offering a prickly response to another transfer probe following the win over Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup, Rodgers insisted he was hopeful that new additions would be in the door before the clash with the champions of Kazakhstan. A new winger is high up on the shopping list following the departure of Nicolas Kuhn while Jota remains sidelined. Michel-Ange Balikwisha remains an option with Royal Antwerp open to a deal for the wide man who is in the final year of his contract. However, his agent has revealed Celtic must make the first move while the club will reportedly sell as soon as the £4.7million price tag is met. That would see the club recoup the fee they paid Standard Liege for the star back in 2021 Cagliari's Adam Obert is also said to be attracting interest from Celtic and in Germany with a £6million price tag has been placed on the 22-year-old. ‌ Gazzetta dello Sport report that a move could materialise quickly for the wide man with his destination "far from certain" with initial offers expected imminently from the likes of Bundesliga side Heidenheim. Andy Irving has been touted with a £3.5million West Ham exit and The People state that the Premier League side will left the Scot leave London 'for the right price.' Former England international Paul Robinson thinks a quick-fire departure could be in motion for the 25-year-old. ‌ Robinson told The Inside Track: 'From the player's point of view, he's at that stage in his career. "He's gone to West Ham where he's not really had that much game time and he's going to want to play. "I think he's a really good player, there's a top player in there, and he's one of these players who will get better if he plays regularly and plays every week. ‌ 'A move away from West Ham seems the only option if he's going to get that. The way Graham Potter rotates his side and changes players, it doesn't look like he's going to get much game time. "Potter wants to rejuvenate his squad, and Celtic are looking at him, so that could be one we see get done in the next week or so.' ‌ A striker is also on the agenda - and the option to make a move for Cluj's Louis Munteanu is alive as Rodgers' looks to find a rival for Adam Idah. Celtic reportedly had a £6.9million bid booted out for the Romania striker earlier in the window - with the Cluj president Nelu Varga insisting theclub they were holding out for around £18million. Munteanu refused to play in last week's Europa League defeat to Braga, according to reports, with Stade Rennes also chasing a deal. ‌ Cluj claimed that the forward was injured but reports suggest that the striker has rebelled over a missing payment. Varga has now been warned by agent Giovanni Becali that he may have to cash in urgently - and accept much less than his personal price tag - as his fee will plummet if the star refuses to plan. He said: "Nelutu Varga has already taken part of those 18 million from Louis Munteanu. He took the down payment and will take another instalment in the winter. They said 'let's let him play with you because he can make a living'." And while firepower has been the demand from boss Rodgers, he could still bolster his backline before the crucial Champions League playoff. Le Havre defender Etienne Youte has already admitted he is awaiting the right club for his next move this summer after entering the final year of his contract. L'Equipe suggest the Scottish Premiership champions have joined Anderlecht and Besiktas in the race to land the 23-year-old - with the Ligue 1 outfit ready to accept a €5million (£4.3million) fee this summer.

Rangers have Nicolas Raskin replacement plan with three player wishlist as record breaking transfer fee 'set'

The midfielder is still highly-rated despite struggling to hold down a regular spot in the side under Russell Martin Rangers have reportedly slapped a £25million price tag on Nicolas Raskin this summer. ‌ Wolves are among the clubs who have been closely tracking the Belgian international throughout the summer. ‌ Boss Russell Martin left the midfielder out of the starting line up for the recent win over Viktoria Plzn and draw with Dundee, claiming the 24-year-old's head had been turned by transfer speculation. ‌ Raskin cost Rangers a little under £1.5million when he arrived two-and-a-half years ago - and Voetbal Primeur now claim that the Ibrox owners will hold out for a record-breaking sale if they are to cash in on the midfielder this summer. Aston Villa, Brighton and Fiorentina are also said to be interested with Standard Liege due 20 percent of the profit Rangers would make on Raskin. Speaking earlier this summer, former Light Blues' interim boss Barry Ferguson state that £15million would have to be the starting point for interested suitors. The fans' favourite was one of the shining lights in an otherwise poor campaign last time around. Raskin's current deal has entered the final two years and the Record Sport columist said: "Nico can play in the Premier League all day long. "I worked with him for three months. He has all the attributes and is still at a brilliant age. ‌ "He still has some things he needs to tidy up on, but he understands that. He's got an opinion which I liked. "He's really interested and keen to learn. All day long he can play in the Premier League. Now, Rangers have got to be looking for big money for Nico. I am looking at £15million at least for Nico - and the rest!" Should a sale be made, boss Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell will likely look to bolster in the attacking ‌ The Ibrox side have been heavily linked with Steaua Bucharest midfielder Darius Olaru in recent windows - and he could still present an option for Rangers. Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon - who spent a brief spell in Romanian football with Rapid Bucharest - was quizzed by Digi Sport on the prospect of the midfielder making a move to Ibrox. He said: "I like Darius Olaru. He's a really good player. It would be interesting to see him play in the UK." ‌ Rangers and Celtic have both been linked with a move for West Ham man Andy Irving with a £3.5million valuation floated. Graham Potter handed the Scot minutes on the opening day of the Premier League season as the Hammers were thumped 3-0 by Sunderland - but C&H report the club remain open to sale and are expecting bids soon. Joe Aribo also looks to be heading out of the door at Southampton - and a reunion with Martin at Ibrox and a return to Ibrox could jump start his career. ‌ The 29-year-old has remained a fan favourite with the Light Blues' faithful having written his name in Rangers history by netting in the Europa League Final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. He has yet to feature for the Saints this season following their Premier League relegation - with boss Will Still explaining the Nigeria international has been given time to explore his options. He told the Daily Echo: "There's been interest around Joe. "I've just tried to give him a bit of headspace, a bit of breathing space to do the right things. We'll just see how that develops over the next few days, a few weeks."
