Fahmi: Hawana aid has helped 405 media practitioners
Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic), who disclosed this, said more media practitioners will receive aid with the Hawana 2025 celebration scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
He said media practitioners who previously received assistance will also get aid.
'If there is anyone we need to reach out to and provide additional assistance for, I will ask that this matter be looked into,' he told reporters after presenting the Tabung Kasih@Hawana contribution to New Straits Times photo editor Ikhwan Munir, 50, who is undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer at Putrajaya Hospital yesterday, Bernama reported.
Also present were Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Media Prima Group managing editor Jasbant Singh.
The fund, an initiative of the Communications Ministry, is managed by Bernama.
Fahmi said the national news agency would continue to monitor the needs of Ikhwan, who has two children aged seven and 23.
'Ikhwan has been battling health issues over the past few weeks, so his wife is unable to work. Bernama will continue to monitor to see if we need to provide further help to him,' he added.
The minister said he also took the opportunity during his visit to seek feedback from the hospital management on telecommunication coverage and Internet access at the health facility.
'They are satisfied, though they did say there is a minor issue with one of the telcos at the new wing. I have asked this telco to help optimise their services,' said Fahmi.

Sweltering heat at Indera Mahkota clinic as air-conditioner breaks down again
KUANTAN: Faulty air-conditioning units at the Indera Mahkota Health Clinic have left patients and staff enduring sweltering conditions since last month. Several stand fans have been deployed in the patient waiting area to provide some relief, especially during the current hot weather. Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang said malfunctioning air-conditioner compressors caused the issue, forcing the clinic to rely entirely on stand fans. "I visited the clinic to inspect the faulty air-conditioning system. I was informed that repair work is expected to be completed by mid-August. The clinic has also requested that the repairs be expedited to minimise inconvenience to patients. For now, the public is encouraged to make appointments through MySejahtera to avoid long waiting times," he said in a Facebook post. Chan also suggested patients bring handheld fans to help cope with the heat while waiting for repairs. This is not the first time the clinic has faced such problems, after the centralised air-conditioning system experienced similar issues in June 2023. At that time, Chan contributed four industrial fans to improve comfort for staff and patients. New Straits Times has reached out to Pahang Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim on long-term measures to resolve the issue.

Melaka high-tech plant boosts clinical waste management in South zone
MELAKA: The high-tech Clinical Waste Disposal Plant operated by Medivest Sdn Bhd in Bukit Rambai is set to address rising clinical waste volumes in the southern region. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh highlighted the facility's role in managing a projected 40 per cent waste increase by 2030. He attributed the surge to expanding healthcare infrastructure across Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor. 'Medical advancements have significantly raised clinical waste volumes, demanding more efficient disposal solutions,' he said during the plant's inauguration. Medivest CEO Abdullah Hashim joined the event, underscoring the plant's operational success since 2022. The facility has safely processed 15,389 metric tonnes of waste, with 3.3 metric tonnes handled up to July 31 this year. This marks an increase from 3 metric tonnes disposed of during the same period in 2024. 'The rising figures confirm the necessity for large-scale, modern waste management systems,' Ab Rauf added. The plant serves 23 hospitals in the southern region with a daily capacity of 20 metric tonnes. Its annual disposal potential of 6,200 tonnes positions Melaka as a regional hub for clinical waste management.
