PGA Tour Golfers Suddenly Withdraw During the RBC Canadian Open
PGA Tour Golfers Suddenly Withdraw During the RBC Canadian Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The RBC Canadian Open concluded its first round on Thursday with Cristobal Del Solar and Thorbjorn Olesen tied for the top spot with a score of 9-under par. Before the tournament teed off on Friday, the PGA Tour was hit with even more withdrawals. Advertisement Seamus Power withdrew from the tournament during the first round after playing the ninth hole. There was no official reason stated for the early exit, but it appears the golfer, who has nearly $15 million in career earnings, is experiencing back and hip issues again. Camilo Villegas decided to forego his spot as well after playing through all 18 holes with a score of 1-over par 70. A shoulder injury he sustained back in 2018 has plagued most of his career. Maybe he is running into issues with it again. There is no official statement for his withdrawal as of yet. He and his wife, Maria, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Mia. Despite an injury sidelining him from his favorite sport, he was happy. Advertisement But his world came crashing down when Mia was diagnosed with brain cancer in early 2020. The little soul fought a strong battle but sadly passed away in July 2020. People from the golf world never left his side. Their love and his daughter's undying spirit brought him back to the sport again. On the other side of the spectrum, Rory McIlroy is having a tough time at the tournament. He is T119 with a score of 1-over par. His groupmate, rookie Luke Clanton, is having a considerably better time at the course. He finished with an even 70 at T96, ending the day with an eagle on 18. The World No. 1 has also decided to join the field of golfers for next month's Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament's official account posted on X on Friday: "The best player in the world returns to the Renaissance Club! DeChambeau is the defending champion and has expressed his eagerness to win it back‑to‑back trophies. "I'm always chasing history," DeChambeau told reporters on Wednesday. "Everybody is. We're all trying to accomplish feats that haven't been done in a long time. "And going back to back would be great. Three in a row would be an even better accomplishment. So it is in the back of my head." On Friday, DeChambeau will tee off at the LIV Golf Virginia, hoping to secure one last win before the major. No, Scottie Scheffler Is Not Playing in the Canadian Open This Week
No, Scottie Scheffler Is Not Playing in the Canadian Open This Week originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golf fans hoping to watch Scottie Scheffler this week will be disappointed as the star opted to skip the RBC Canadian Open. The wait will not last long as Scheffler will be looking to win his second straight major at the U.S. Open in the coming days. Advertisement Scheffler and an impressive field of golfers will tee off from Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., on June 12. The RBC Canadian Open is not without stars as Rory McIlroy headlines the field of golfers with Scheffler choosing to skip the event. It is unclear exactly why Scheffler opted not to play in the RBC Canadian Open. With the U.S. Open less than one week away, it would make sense if Scheffler preferred to prepare for the major with some extra days of rest. Scottie Scheffler looks at the trophy on hole No. 18 after the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Course on Sunday, June 1, 2025 in Dublin, Madar/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Scheffler is coming off a win at the Memorial and also secured a win at the PGA Championship, the last major tournament. The star golfer may not be competing this week but is already committing to future events. The Scottish Open announced on Friday that Scheffler will be part of the star-studded field for the tournament that tees off on July 9. Scheffler believes playing in the Memorial will serve as great preparation for the U.S. Open at Oakmont. "Well, this golf course, like Oakmont, I think this is a place where if there's a weakness in your game, this golf course is going expose it pretty quick," Scheffler told reporters on Sunday after winning the Memorial. "It's a challenging week and this is always a good barometer of where you're at playing because, I mean, each day on the course -- I think the first two days you had guys shoot 65. I think the best round on Saturday was 66 and the best round today was 65. Advertisement "... That's what I think is great about this golf course, is there's opportunity and there's good difficulty. As far as prep work for the U.S. Open, I mean, like you said, the rough's going to be pretty similar and I think it's great prep."
