Jim Goodwin aims to strengthen Dundee United squad as injury blues hit after Euro win
Jim Goodwin is looking to strengthen his Dundee United squad further as Kristijan Trapanovski looks set to be added to his growing injury list.
United claimed their first away win in Europe in 28 years against UNA Strassen to book a mouthwatering third round qualifying clash with Rapid Vienna.
Trapanovski limped off with another hamstring injury and it doesn't look good and he is added to the likes of Ross Graham and Ryan Strain who also missed the game in Luxembourg.
Goodwin confirmed: 'We don't need another injury. He's tried to sprint for the ball over the top and felt his hamstring.
'We're hoping it's nothing serious. You could see how depleted the squad were. Now he's got a knock.
'Hopefully, it's nothing serious but it does limit our options.
'There's lots of time left in the window.
'Given the injuries we have it goes to show the good work we've done to be without seven first team players and still be able to field a team that's competitive in both legs and has got us through.
'That's credit to the guys who have done the recruitment but we're continually looking to add quality.'
Falkirk are next up for United on Sunday before they prepare for their Europa Conference League first leg in Austria next week.
Goodwin is already aware of the massive challenge his side face to make the play-off round. He is looking for big improvements as his squad, which has seen 11 new arrivals, begins to gel.
He admitted: 'It's a huge game. We know the level of quality they have got.
'They sold a player for 10 million euros.
'They have really good young talent in their squad and we know it'll be extremely difficult.
'It's an exciting one but we need to improve on what we've done against Strassen.
'There are elements we have to get better at and that has to happen quickly because better opposition will punish you for the mistakes but I can't be too critical as it's still a new group.'
Rangers and Aberdeen have both slipped up in Luxembourg in recent seasons and so Goodwin was pleased to come through unscathed with two wins against UNA Strassen. It was their first away win since 1997 when they beat Principat.
He stated: 'We're delighted with the result.
'There were elements we need to do better, but credit Strassen over the two legs.
'They looked really well coached, have good players and are no mugs.
'Sometimes you can underestimate the opposition given the size of the country and people can be dismissive but we weren't in our preparations.
'It's always very difficult to come away from home in any game, nevermind in Europe.
'It's the first time anyone here has been in this situation so a lot of players will take great credit.
'I'm also led to believe it's the first time in nearly 30 years Dundee United have won away in Europe for the first time but we won't get carried away.'
United's new boys might be finding their feet but the defence is providing the perfect platform. They haven't lost a goal in pre-season or in their first two competitive games.
Goodwin proudly added: 'Defensively was a big part of our game last season and it will be this season.
'This back three haven't conceded a goal all pre-season which is credit to them. It gives you a good foundation but we need to be better in possession.
'We didn't do ourselves justice at times but when we relaxed and showed composure we looked a decent team.
'Getting the goal we were able to come off the game a bit.
'We've got an eye on the game against Falkirk and we were able to try and rest our legs for the last 20 minutes.
'I think we deserved it.'
The United goal here was Iurie Iovu who netted from a Zac Sapsford free kick.
Goodwin stated: 'We've got good delivery coming in and a great aerial presence.
'It was a fantastic delivery from Zac.
'That's a goal and assist from him, big Iurie made it look a lot easier than it was.
'We've got an exciting fixture to look forward to.
'Hopefully, the fans can raid their piggy banks again to follow us to Vienna.'

Kobbie Mainoo message sent to Ruben Amorim as he receives reminder amid £60m transfer link
Ruben Amorim has been urged to put more trust in Kobbie Mainoo by Rio Ferdinand despite his admiration for Adam Wharton, who has been linked with Manchester United Rio Ferdinand has called on Ruben Amorim to place his trust in Kobbie Mainoo despite his respect for Adam Wharton. Manchester United could strengthen their midfield before the transfer deadline and have been linked with Crystal Palace's Wharton and Brighton's Carlos Belaba this summer. It's understood that Wharton would cost at least £60m while Brighton are demanding more than £100m for Belaba. Nevertheless, according to Ferdinand, United also possess the solution in the form of Mainoo, who remained on the bench during Sunday's home loss to Arsenal. The ex-United defender is a massive admirer of Wharton but reckons the club can save cash by maximising the potential of Mainoo, who was utilised in various roles last season. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: "He [Wharton] would have been one of the midfielders on my hitlist. Yes, we've been talking about Belaba; he's been the hot topic for the last month or so. "Before that, Adam Wharton was one of the guys. Listen, he's the nearest to a Michael Carrick type. He's a controller who plays forward from that deeper line position. "I watched him against a couple of the bigger teams like Liverpool and Man City, and he was unfazed. He's ready for a big occasion and enjoys pressure. I love him, I think he's a fantastic footballer. "But we've got Kobbie Mainoo. He can do that role, he can control a game and play deep. Playing two central midfielders, Kobbie Mainoo can play that role, given the opportunity. You can play through someone like him, you can get out of tight situations and open the game up. "He might just have to be a patient young man at the moment, for the team to find its way, for the manager to then put the trust in him to go and play. If it was me, if I was playing two in the midfield, Kobbie Mainoo would be one of my two. "I think he's a super talent who can handle the ball as well as anyone at Man United at present. I would give him that responsibility." After a stunning breakthrough 2023/24 season, when he shone for both United and England, Mainoo suffered an injury-hit campaign. Speaking earlier this year, Amorim revealed he would seek to establish a consistent role for Mainoo. The United boss explained: "We are really happy to have more options and an option like Kobbie Mainoo, with the quality that he has - he has played as a 6, as an 8 and as a 10 - we are really pleased to have Kobbie Mainoo but we have to be careful, we need Kobbie Mainoo fit and fresh. "In England, sometimes they play with three defenders also, was more or less the same position. So he can play, we need to help him and find a little bit like Casemiro, [who] is playing better because we understand better the way Casemiro can play. "And I think we can do that with Kobbie because he has a lot of qualities. He is really good on the ball but also near the opponent's box. We will try to manage all that and find the right space for a player like Kobbie."

Watch: Blindfolded horse causes chaos at Windsor after breaking free from stalls
Windsor officials were forced to void a race on Monday after a blindfolded horse broke free and charged through a plastic running rail, resulting in five jockeys landing bans for failing to stop as the chaos unfolded The five-furlong Apprentice Handicap was due to begin at 4:52pm on Monday when Beaumadier, ridden by Conor Whiteley, appeared to anticipate the stalls opening. That movement appeared to spook Master Zack alongside it, as the three-year-old bay colt reared up under Ryan Kavanagh, with the gates triggered in the melee. A blindfold had been required to get Master Zack into the stalls and Kavanagh had not had a chance to remove it when the stalls flew open. Kavanagh stepped on to the side of the stalls and Master Zack ran away with the blindfold on, breaking through a couple of the plastic rails, but was caught and reported to be none the worse for the experience. That left six running over the five furlongs, including Beaumadier who was very slowly away after his stalls incident and detached from the group, with Tommie Jakes passing the post first on Michael Attwater's Cabeza De Llave. However, as the starter was waving his flag to abandon the start, the five jockeys who finished the race were deemed to have fallen foul of event regulations and were each handed 10-day bans for ignoring requests to stop. Jakes told Sky Sports Racing: 'I wouldn't have seen the starter waving a flag as I was drawn wide. I don't know why it was a false start anyway. 'I know a horse reared up just as I left the gates, but I didn't think anything of it, really. I did hear a bit of screaming at the start, but I thought that was when the one reared up. 'We just heard on the commentary and I didn't see any flag, so I just carried on.' Jack Doughty, Jack Dace, Taryn Langley and Alec Voikhansky all completed the course on their respective mounts and, along with Jakes, received a 10-day suspension for failing to pull up. Richard Westropp, chief stipendiary steward, said: 'Stall two [Beaumadier], the door flapped back into his path as the start was activated, so on the basis of that the starter called a false start. 'His flag was raised as it should be. All the horses ran but stall four [Master Zack] got loose. 'On the basis of the starter calling a false start, the recall man was stood right in the middle of the track, he waved his flag and blew his whistle, so procedures were followed to a tee. 'The jockeys told us in the inquiry they did not see the flag or hear the whistle, bar Mr Whiteley who did on horse number two, who actually activated the false start in the first place. He did see and made every effort to pull up his horse up. 'All the jockeys bar Conor Whiteley and Ryan Kavanagh have been banned for 10 days. Every jockey is entitled to an appeal.' Dace's ban will run from September 3-13 inclusive, while the other four riders will be sidelined from September 1-10.

Legia Warsaw in chaos before Hibs Conference League shootout as boss offered mega money temptation
The Easter Road side have received a major boost before the showdown as they look to secure group stage football Legia Warsaw are facing the prospect of boss Edi Iordanescu walking away for a big-money move to Abu Dhabi before facing Hibs. The Scottish Premiership side entertain the Polish giants for a place in the group stage of the Europa Conference League with the first leg in Edinburgh on Thursday. Legia have endured a nightmare build-up to the tie after being dumped out of the Europa League by AEK Larnaca and then losing to Polish League new boys Wisla Plock at the weekend. And now their Romanian boss Iordanescu has reportedly been offered a new challenge in the United Arab Emirates. Ambitious moneybags club Al Jazira axed manager Hussein Ammouta just one game into the new season in the UAE. They spent millions in the summer to sign Willyan Rocha from Russia's CSKA Moscow and Igor Serrote from Gremio in Brazil, but their 3-2 to Khor Fakkan cost the former Jordan manager his job. And they have targeted ex-Romania boss Iordanescu to replace him, according to reports in the Gulf. Iordanescu has a release clause in his contract that would allow him to leave Legia for just £400,000 and is weighing over a huge offer of £3million a year to manage Al Jazira. He only took charge of Legia two months ago, but has made a rocky start to his tenure after a disappointing exit in Europe, where they were thrashed 4-1 in Cyprus.
