Dream that jolts you out of sleep to achieve big: Karnataka Housing Board Commissioner
'One must dream but it should be a dream that jolts one out of sleep,' said Karnataka Housing Board Commissioner K.A. Dayananda at the valedictory function of a 50-day residential coaching camp for IAS and KAS aspirants, organised by the Competitive Exam Training Centre at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru on Tuesday.
'Dedication and relentless hard work can make such dreams a reality. Daydreaming about film or cricket stars will take you nowhere,' he said.
Sharing his personal journey, Mr. Dayananda spoke about his humble beginnings in a thatched hut at Kestur Koppal in K.R. Nagar taluk, his childhood routine of walking four km to Hebbalu with sugarcane and tomatoes, and his early jobs including working as a lineman in Bengaluru's Majestic area and selling onions and garlic in local markets.
'I studied in a Kannada medium school, and there were engineers and doctors when I became the Assistant Commissioner after clearing my KAS exam. I did not even know what a computer was. Yet, I was instrumental in implementing the e-office system in the State,' he recalled.
Mr. Dayananda said poverty or studying in a Kannada medium are not obstacles. 'Don't go looking for a guru. Don't let your mind control you; you must control it.'
The event featured an interactive session with Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya. KSOU Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse spoke on the university's commitment to coaching rural and underprivileged students.
C.S. Anandakumar, Jainahalli Satyanarayana Gowda, Siddesh Honnoor, and B. Ganesh were present.

Tailor's daughter secures 17 gold medals
Huvinahadagali (Vijayanagara): Sahana Patage, who received 17 gold medals from Bagalkot University of Horticultural Sciences on Tuesday, hails from Holalu village in Huvinahadagali taluk of the district. Sahana, daughter of tailor Manjunath Patage and Shobha, achieved this impressive milestone while studying for her degree in horticultural science at Bidar Horticultural College during the 2021-24 academic period. She completed her education in Kannada medium at Swami Vivekananda Govt High School in Holalu village. She has even got first place in the Ballari district during the 2017 SSLC examination. Reflecting on her achievement, Sahana said, "I was a topper in college. However, I never anticipated reaching such heights in my degree. I am thrilled to have received so many medals. Given the chance to study, children, particularly girls, can surpass their parents' expectations. I aim to contribute positively to the farming community." The villagers and educators of the district have congratulated Sahana on her exceptional achievement.

568 teacher posts vacant in Kodagu govt schools
Madikeri: As students resumed their studies following their two-month summer holiday, despite the rain, the district's govt primary and high schools are experiencing a considerable shortage of teaching staff. The district houses 623 govt educational institutions, comprising both primary and high schools. The vacancy in Kodagu district's govt schools shows 568 unfilled teaching positions, with 143 vacancies in primary schools and 425 in high schools. This shortage existed before the academic year started. In Madikeri taluk's govt primary schools, while 97 teaching positions are sanctioned, only 51 are occupied, leaving 46 vacant. Somwarpet taluk currently employs 132 teachers out of 195 sanctioned positions, with 63 positions unfilled. Virajpet taluk's govt primary schools have 86 teachers working against 120 sanctioned positions, leaving 34 vacancies. The district's govt primary schools have 412 sanctioned permanent teaching positions, with 269 currently filled, requiring 143 additional permanent appointments. Virajpet taluk has 484 sanctioned positions, 294 filled positions, requiring 190 additional appointments. Govt high schools require 1,412 permanent teachers, currently have 987, and need 425 more appointments. Reliance on guest teachers The current situation forces existing teachers to work under considerable pressure. The absence of permanent staff has led to increased reliance on guest teachers for maintaining educational standards. The teacher shortage in govt high schools correlates with declining SSLC results. Teachers often must handle multiple subjects, with headmasters and physical education instructors taking additional teaching responsibilities. The shortage particularly affects SSLC performance in Mathematics, Science, and English. And Kannada teachers must also teach English classes. While private schools can partner with companies for appointments, govt schools depend on guest teacher appointments. Some primary schools lack headmasters, with co-teachers serving as acting headmasters. Govt plans to appoint 384 guest teachers in Kodagu district against the 568 vacancies. Statewide, the govt intends to appoint 51,000 guest teachers, avoiding permanent appointments. Kodagu DDPI C Rangadhamappa said 384 guest teacher posts have already been sanctioned for Kodagu district. If there is still demand, guest teachers will be appointed. 70% of the textbooks and other supplies have been supplied. Work is under way to supply it to all schools, he said.
