Sunderland reach €10m agreement to sign goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen

New York Times30-07-2025
Sunderland have reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen.
The deal will be worth north of €10.5million (£9m; $12.1m) plus €3m add-ons and will also include a sell-on clause.
Roefs, 22, is scheduled to undergo a medical on Wednesday before joining the newly-promoted side on a five-year contract. He is expected to be Sunderland's new starting goalkeeper.
The Netherlands Under-21 international would become their seventh recruit of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, and Simon Adingra.
Regis Le Bris' side are also close to completing the acquisition of former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen.
Roefs came through NEC Nimegen's youth academy and has gone on to make 42 appearances, helping them achieve an eighth-place finish last season.
He has also represented his country at various youth levels, featuring at the recent Under-21 European Championship.
Roefs contributed in a run to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual winners England.

Togetherness will make Sunderland stronger says forward Watson

Sunderland forward Katy Watson says that togetherness will only make the team stronger as they look to progress in this season's Barclays WSL2. After going close to winning promotion in 2023/2024, The Lady Black Cats finished last season in seventh position in the league table. Going for promotion this season won't be easy but forward Watson says that togetherness will certainly provide Sunderland with solid foundations to do well. 'The season where we almost won the league was a shock to ourselves because we weren't going for promotion at all, it was just about finishing as high as we could,' Watson told WSL Full-Time. 'When we started winning games, we just said 'we can actually do this'. We didn't expect to win but it just kept getting closer and closer and we missed out with a couple of games left. 'Last season, maybe we set our standards too high and expected to finish that high [again] then when we went into games against the teams below, we might have been a bit too confident, that could have been where we went wrong. 'Going into this season, the togetherness definitely helps. We are doing lots of team-bonding stuff. As teammates, getting behind each other definitely makes us stronger and will help us get good results.' Sunderland are not only competing for promotion, they are also battling with neighbours Durham and Newcastle United for local bragging rights. Watson says that the North East competition is fierce. She said 'Every team in the North East want the bragging rights so that they can say they're the best team. Going into games, there's a lot of pressure. Everyone wants to win and they'll do absolutely anything to win.' Watson got her preparations for the new season off to the best possible start. She netted a hat-trick in Sunderland's 4-0 pre-season friendly victory over Rangers last week. The player revealed that she was eager to get back on the pitch and scoring goals. She said 'Going into the game, I was quite nervous because it was one of the first friendlies in pre-season. We had a big build-up on running; we pretty much ran every training session, so it was just nice to finally get a game. 'It was my first start of pre-season and I just went for goal. I definitely needed it because the first few sessions of pre-season were a lot of running, not as much football, so it was nice to get on the pitch, have a ball at my feet and just do what I do.' Sunderland kick-off the new Barclays WSL2 season with a fixture at Sheffield United on Friday 5 September 2025.

Sunderland captain decision explained and update on new 'leadership team'

GRANIT Xhaka says he's "incredibly proud" after being named Sunderland captain for the coming Premier League campaign. Luke O'Nien was club captain last season and Dan Neil team captain, but it's new recruit Xhaka who will wear the armband this season, the Black Cats have confirmed. And Le Bris is also in the process of finalising a new leadership team. The make-up of that team will be confirmed at the end of the summer transfer window. Granit brings all these qualities. "His behaviour so far has been very impressive, and on the field, you can see that his level is high. "Others around him can feel this influence, and his leadership will support the team as we adapt to a different environment and face new challenges and opportunities. "Granit's role will also form part of a new leadership team, which will be finalised following the end of the summer transfer window.' During his glittering career, Xhaka has captained Switzerland, Arsenal Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. The 32-year-old said: 'It makes me incredibly proud to be captain of this club and of this team. "I hope to show my leadership on and off the pitch, helping my team-mates in the training ground and across the club. "To be part of Sunderland's history, alongside some of the names who have worn the armband before, is an honour. "People who know me know exactly what they'll get – I'm someone who demands a lot. I'm a winner and I want to win – and I expect the same from my teammates."

🎶 Pop predicts Premier League 25/26: Tom A. Smith (Sunderland) 🔮

The new Premier League season is almost upon us and to celebrate, we have enlisted the help of some football-loving pop stars to preview and predict the coming campaign. Click here to read all of the interviews! Today we've got Sunderland fan Tom A. Smith! Hi Tom. What are you hoping to see from Sunderland in the 2025/26 Premier League season? I'm hoping to see Sunderland continue what we saw last season and keep battling to keep their place in the division and hopefully beat Newcastle at least once. What is your hottest take or boldest prediction for Sunderland's 2025/26 Premier League season? I think Eliezer Mayenda is going to be a bit of a force. I think he'll more than match the pace of the league and get some good numbers to solidify himself as a quality Premier League forward. If you were going to bet your life savings on something definitely happening to Sunderland in the 2025/26 season, what would it be? I can guarantee that the Stadium Of Light will become an absolute fortress and will be a difficult ground to come to. Other than your own, which team or player are you most excited to watch in the 2025/26 season? The player I'm excited about seeing in the Premier League this season is our former loanee Amad Diallo. We loved him when he was here and I can't wait to see him at the ground again. What do you predict will be the first managerial change of the 2025/26 season? I think Scott Parker will struggle. Burnley were a good defensive unit in the Championship but he has always struggled to keep teams alive in the Premier League. We will see. Who will turn out to be Sunderland's signing of the summer? I think Granit Xhaka is an excellent signing and he will prove his worth no doubt. He'll really solidify the midfield. I also feel Simon Adringra is an exciting signing and we know he has Premier League quality. Who will finish as the Premier League's Player of the Season? I think it's hard to look past Cole Palmer. He is absolutely world class and I think he'll lead Chelsea to help challenge for the title. Also an honourable mention for Luke O'Nien. Who will win the Golden Boot? Viktor Gyökeres is an outstanding signing and I saw his quality in the Championship only a couple of seasons ago. I think he will get some serious numbers for Arsenal this season. Which club will win the Premier League title? Liverpool have somehow managed to make their squad even better so I'm sure they wll once again win the league. Arsenal and Chelsea could also be good challengers. Finally, which three clubs will be relegated? Burnley, Brentford, Leeds. Sunderland to stay up. Tom A. Smith's new track, Fashion is out now.
