Sunderland take spending up to £122million by announcing EIGHTH signing of the summer transfer window after return to Premier League
Sunderland have taken their summer spending up to a record high after completing their eighth new signing of the summer. Regis Le Bris led the Black Cats back to the Premier League via the play-offs nearly a decade languishing outside the top flight. And with promoted sides finding it increasingly difficult to stave off the drop in recent years Le Bris has wasted little time in bolstering his ranks for the coming campaign. On Friday Sunderland announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC in a deal worth a reported £11.5million. The 22-year-old Netherlands youth international enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Eredivisie last season, keeping 10 league clean sheets as NEC finished a respectable 8th under Dick Schreuder. Sunderland's summer spending has now exceeded £122million, more than double their previous record for a Premier League season. Premier League summer spending (per Transfermarkt) 1. Liverpool - £267m 2. Chelsea - £204m 3. Arsenal - £194m 4. Man City - £153m 5. Man United - £132m 6. Sunderland - £122m 7. Tottenham - £121m 8. Leeds United - £74m 9. Brighton - £69m 10. Burnley - £64m 11. Nottingham Forest - £63m 12. Wolves - £58m 13. West Ham - £53m 14. Newcastle - £53m 15. Everton - £50m 16. Brentford - £48m 17. Bournemouth - £36m 18. Aston Villa - £6m 19. Crystal Palace - £2m 20. Fulham - £430,000 Earlier this week the club completed the signing of veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen in a move worth £17m. Xhaka spent seven years in north London between 2016 and 2023 and made nearly 300 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions. The 32-year-old has spent the last two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, and was part of Xabi Alonso 's side that secured the club's first ever Bundesliga title while embarking on an unprecedented 51-game unbeaten run. The former Arsenal star isn't the only new midfield arrival, however. Enzo Le Fee has completed a permanent move to the Stadium of Light from Roma after making 11 appearances on loan during last season's promotion charge. 'I said before the playoff final that my heart was in Sunderland,' said Le Fee. 'I wanted to stay, and this made it the most important game of my life.' Senegal international Habib Diarra was brought in from Strasbourg for a club-record fee to replace the gap left in midfield following Jobe Bellingham's departure. He joins 20-year-old Noah Sadiki as yet another addition for the middle of the park. Meanwhile experienced left-back Reinildo has also joined the club after featuring in the Champions League for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone last season. Former Brighton star Simon Adingra and promising young winger Chemsdine Talbi have also joined the club this summer. Meanwhile Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has opted to join the club on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old had attracted interest from a number of clubs, notably Ipswich Town, but Chelsea were keen for the teenager to gain Premier League experience. Sunderland had also shown interest in Chelsea's Deivid Washington who has been on loan at Santos but the move for Guiu represents another coup in what is proving a busy summer for the Wearside club. Guiu cost Chelsea £5million from Barcelona last year and scored six goals in 16 matches during his first season at Stamford Bridge. His progress was stunted by a hamstring injury which sidelined him between February and May, but he was back in time for the Conference League final against Real Betis, coming on as a late substitute. The Black Cats kick off their Premier League season at home to West Ham on August 16.
