ASEAN-GCC aim for US$180 bln trade by 2032
Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said the GCC is now ASEAN's seventh-largest trading partner, with total trade reaching US$130.7 billion in 2023.
'We aim to increase this figure to US$180 billion by 2032, as there remains substantial untapped potential in bilateral trade and investment,' he said.
The Crown Prince, who is also the President of the current session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, made the remarks during the Second ASEAN-GCC Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
He also noted the encouraging rise in foreign investment into Asian markets as a sign of confidence and sustainable economic integration.
'We would like to underscore the importance of continuing cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment and the arts, and we look forward to the positive outcomes of free trade agreement negotiations between both sides, which will open up investment opportunities and support regional development,' His Highness added.
He said this year's summit played a crucial role in enhancing cooperation between the two regions.
'This session has inspired us to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and reflects the deep historical ties between both parties.
'It also demonstrates our shared commitment to building a strategic partnership founded on mutual interests, the principles of international law, and sustainable development for our people,' he added.
The first ASEAN-GCC Summit, held on October 20, 2023, in Riyadh, marked a significant start in establishing a comprehensive cooperation framework for the 2024–2028 period, aimed at laying a solid foundation for rapid development through this partnership.
On the issue of Palestine, the Crown Prince called for continuous collaboration between the GCC and ASEAN to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the worsening Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
'The GCC reaffirms its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
'We urge the international community to act swiftly and decisively to end the violence and initiate a peace process grounded in international law and the Arab Peace Initiative,' he said.
He also proposed that the year 2026 be declared the GCC-ASEAN Year of Cultural Solidarity, with a variety of programmes to enhance bilateral ties, along with joint initiatives to empower youth and women through training, skills development, and entrepreneurship projects.
Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Riyadh, the GCC comprises six member states: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Anwar's proposal for Ministry of Law aligns with Malaysia Madani agenda, says Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal to establish a Ministry of Law is in line with the Malaysia Madani agenda, which upholds integrity, transparency and the rule of law as the foundation of the nation's progress, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She said the announcement underscores the importance of the ministry in strengthening the country's legal ecosystem, enhancing the effectiveness of institutional reforms, and expanding public access to justice. 'InsyaAllah, we will continue to drive the success of the legal reform agenda, which not only benefits Malaysians but also positions Asean as a just, resilient, and prosperous region,' she said in a Facebook post today. Earlier, in his keynote address at the Asean Law Forum 2025, Anwar said the government was considering the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Law to ensure greater coherence in the national legal system. He said the move would also enable Malaysia to engage more meaningfully with regional partners in advancing the rule of law, particularly with fellow Asean member states. Azalina also expressed her appreciation to Anwar for delivering the keynote address and witnessing the adoption of the Joint Statement at the inaugural forum. She said this reflects the nation's leadership commitment to reinforcing regional legal cooperation in pursuit of more inclusive justice. 'Also, my gratitude to fellow Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Law from Asean member states, including Timor-Leste and Japan, as well as Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn,' she added. — Bernama

Talking big about tourism to feel good?
THE above was how I felt when reading the heading of a Bernama report 'Malaysia targets high-value tourists for Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign'. Undoubtedly, tourism expenditure is ultimately the most important, but high numbers of visitors are needed to ensure stability of businesses and sustainability of the industry, which could be volatile when arrivals are highly seasonal and very low in between. Hence, all visitors should be welcomed, regardless whether they are low or high-value. Those on corporate travel may stay in luxury hotels and use limousine services, but may not spend much on other things, and their stays are usually shorter than tourists on holidays. On the other hand, those who stay in more affordable tourist-class hotels may spend a considerable sum on shopping, which is the main tourism expenditure for both foreign and domestic tourists. They also contribute significantly to various food and beverage outlets. Identifying high-spending visitors is more like guesswork or stereotyping. A good example is tourists from China. It was true that initially, many came on cheap tours and were ferried to dubious outlets for shopping with multiple parties receiving commissions. They include tourist guides, often tour leaders as well, and bus drivers receiving, not paying, 'parking fees'. If prearranged, local inbound tour operators also get a cut, and so would foreign outbound tour operators by stationing their personnel here to closely monitor shopping activities. From 2012 onwards, Chinese tourists were known as the highest spending in the world. For example in 2017, they spent US$258 bil, representing 20% of global tourism spending, according to the World Economic Forum, and were eagerly welcomed by luxury stores in Europe. Today, the majority of Chinese tourists are 'Free Independent Travellers' (FITs). They are younger and much more confident, using their smartphones for information, translation, navigation and payment, relying more on their apps and are hardly influenced by other sources or people. Before the pandemic in 2019, the top five countries whose nationalities spent the most amount of money in Malaysia were Singapore, China, Indonesia, Thailand and India. In terms of per diem or per person per day, they were from Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Singapore, Australia and China. Therefore, it would be a huge mistake to assume that visitors from neighbouring countries like Singapore and Brunei are low-value tourists who do not spend much by making cross border trips to Malaysia. On Tuesday, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said 'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5% to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2% to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6% to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6% rise to 807,664 from 638,109.' 'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists', rebutting inaccurate claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China. He added 'ITC (Islamic Tourism Centre under his ministry) has also carried out a tourism promotion mission to four major countries, namely China, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, as part of efforts to boost Muslim tourist arrivals, particularly ahead of VM2026'. After reading the full Bernama report, I find the heading is inaccurate, as it does not truly reflect the contents. This was confirmed by another report on the same matter by an English daily with the heading 'Over 10 million Singaporean tourist arrivals in 2025 to date, says Tiong'. Lest we forget, it is not a straightforward matter that we will get high-value tourists simply by targeting this segment. We must first have high-end products in terms of both goods and services, and establishments that offer them know how to tap these markets before investing. Also, the wealthy do not feel rich if all those around them are affluent. It would not be viable to operate an airline offering only first-class seats, or a destination with only luxury hotels that are five-star or above. There must be a diverse range, from very high-end to middle tier then budget. Have you ever wondered why the 27-storey Antilia, worth more than US$2 bil and the most expensive private residence in India owned by Mukesh Ambani, is located in South Mumbai where the contrast between wealth and poverty is stark? In any case, the main focus on tourism promotions is getting visitors to stay longer in the country by visiting multiple destinations and spending more. In 2003, their average length of stay was eight nights and 6.2 in 2019. In 2023, it was only 2.45 nights, and rose to 4.5 nights last year. ‒ Aug 21, 2025 YS Chan is the master trainer for Mesra Malaysia and Travel and Tours Enhancement Course. Evergreen Max Cash Q2 FY25 profit jumps 66% as revenue doubles
KUALA LUMPUR: Pawnbroking service provider Evergreen Max Cash Capital Bhd (EMCC) continued to deliver strong growth for Q2 FY25, ending June 30, 2025, with revenue growing 100.8% year-on-year (YoY) to RM48.8 million from RM24.3 million in Q2 FY24. Net profit for Q2 surged 65.8% YoY to RM9.3 million compared to RM5.6 million in Q2 FY24. The strong performance was underpinned by growth across all key business segments, namely, conventional pawnbroking, retail and trading of gold and luxury products, as well as the Tawarruq products segment. The strong growth was mainly fueled by the availability of cash capital from internally generated funds, the strategic utilisation of borrowings to support pawn loan deployment, and favourable gold prices, which averaged US$3,272/oz in Q2 FY25 versus US$2,327/oz in Q2 FY24. For the cumulative six-month period, EMCC recorded revenue of RM94.7 million in 1H FY25, which represents an increase of 84.7% from RM51.3 million in 1H FY24. Net profit rose 58.5% YoY to RM16.3 million compared to RM10.3 million a year earlier. In 1H FY25, the conventional pawnbroking segment recorded revenue of RM25.8 million, a 30.9% YoY increase, driven by higher pawn loans disbursed, which rose RM72.7 million or 28.6% YoY. The gold and luxury retail and trading segment also delivered a significant 97.0% YoY increase in revenue to RM59.6 million, supported by higher sales volume of unredeemed pledged gold and pre-owned gold items. Meanwhile, the Tawarruq products segment continued to gain traction, with 1H FY25 revenue increasing more than six-fold to RM9.3 million. This reflects the group's successful expansion into Islamic pawnbroking under the Tawarruq concept. Pawn loans disbursed under this segment increased by RM131.3 million, representing a 670.8% YoY growth. As of July 31, 2025, EMCC operated a total of 91 outlets, comprising 29 conventional pawnshops and 62 Islamic pawnshop branches across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Terengganu. Commenting on the group's financial achievements, executive director and group managing director Datuk Low Kok Chuan said, 'Our strong first half financial performance underscores the resilience of the group's business model. 'We remain on track to achieve the target of 100 outlets by the end of 2025, while the strategic emphasis on Islamic pawnbroking is already showing promising results, with the segment growing rapidly and becoming an increasingly pivotal part of the business. 'Through ongoing engagement with financial institutions, we have further strengthened awareness and understanding of the pawnbroking industry, which in turn has translated into greater confidence in extending financing. 'This was reflected in the RM40.0 million revolving credit facility secured with CIMB Bank in May 2025, as well as the completion of the Islamic Redeemable Convertible Preference Shares (RCPS-i) subscription with DPK Private Equity in August 2025, which raised another RM40.0 million. 'Looking ahead, we are optimistic about EMCC's growth prospects. Backed by our expanding loan book, swift rollout of pawnshop outlets, and improved funding capacity, the group is hence well-positioned to capture the market further,' Low concluded. The board has declared an interim single-tier dividend of 0.3 sen per ordinary share, amounting to approximately RM3.3 million, for the current quarter under review. This represents a 20.2% payout based on 1H FY25 net profit of RM16.3 million.
