
Superagers, the brainy 90-year-olds who remember better than most 40- year olds
As we age, our brains naturally shrink a bit, and with that comes the usual forgetfulness, names, dates, where you put your keys. It's just part of getting older. But then there are the rare few known as 'SuperAgers.
' These folks, often in their 80s or beyond, somehow hold onto crystal-clear memories like they're still in their 40s. Their brains don't just age well, they push back hard. While most of us struggle to remember what we had for lunch yesterday, SuperAgers are out here recalling details from decades ago like it happened last week. Pretty wild, right?
'Superaging,' is a term coined at the Northwestern Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) to define persons ≥ 80 years with delayed word recall raw scores at least equal to those of individuals 20 to 30 years younger.

Meet Carol Seigler, a superager as she turns 90
Carol Siegler, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Palatine, is a SuperAger. At 82, she won the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament for her age group, which she said she entered 'as a gag," CNN reported.
According to Tamar Gefen, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Mesulam Institute for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease at Northwestern University in Chicago,Siegler is still going strong, well on her way to her 90th birthday.
What's the secret of superagers?
Gefen, conducts research at Northwestern's SuperAging Program that is currently studying 113 SuperAgers told CNN that the cingulate cortex, which is the part of the brain responsible for attention, motivation, and cognitive engagement, is thicker in superagers. "In the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain, we found SuperAgers have three times fewer tau tangles when compared to their 'normal' peers. Abnormal formations of tau proteins are one of the key signs of Alzheimer's," he added.
"These superagers maintain good brain morphology, tend to be gregarious, appear resistant to neurofibrillary degeneration and resilient to its consequences, have a more robust cholinergic system, carry more von Economo neurons, and have less inflammatory microglial activity in the white matter," Gefen wrote in a research paper which was released on Thursday in the journal of the Alzheimer's Association.
How do superagers react to stress?
"Compared with the brain of same-age peers, SuperAgers have fewer activated microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, in their white matter.
White matter is the brain's super highway, transporting information from one part of the brain to another," explains Gefen. "The brain of a SuperAger, however, has fewer activated microglia. In fact, the levels of microglia were on par with people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
That could mean there is less junk or disease in the brain of a SuperAger so the microglia have no need to be active," he added.
Microglia are like the brain's built-in cleanup crew and security team rolled into one.
These tiny, special immune cells hang out in your brain and spinal cord, always on the lookout for trouble. If something's off—like damaged cells, infections, or random junk that doesn't belong—microglia jump into action. They gobble up debris, fight off invaders, and even help keep neurons healthy. Think of them as the brain's mini bodyguards and janitors.
But here's the twist: when microglia go rogue or stay active for too long (like during chronic stress or aging), they can actually cause more harm than good, triggering inflammation or damaging healthy brain cells.
Scientists are now learning how important these little guys are not just for brain health, but also in conditions like Alzheimer's, depression, and multiple sclerosis. So yeah, microglia may be tiny, but they're kind of a big deal when it comes to your brain.
In the future, deeper characterization of the superaging phenotype may lead to interventions that enhance resistance and resilience to involutional changes considered part of average (i.e., 'normal') brain aging, Gefen says in the research paper.

New Delhi: Women with Down syndrome have more advanced signs of Alzheimer's disease than men do, according to research. However, the average age of Down syndrome diagnosis is the same for both men and women, said the University of California, Irvine. The study suggests that women with Down syndrome may carry a higher burden of beta amyloid and phosphorylated tau -- two hallmark Alzheimer's proteins -- than men. It was particularly high in the occipital lobe in women with sporadic Alzheimer's disease -- the more common, late-onset form of Alzheimer's that occurs without a clear genetic cause. This insight points to the need for more sex-specific approaches in both Alzheimer's research and treatment planning, especially in the design of clinical trials. Women versus men "Understanding selective vulnerabilities within the brain and how these differ in women versus men will help us to better navigate treatment outcomes. We're learning the importance of modifiable risk factors, which include accounting for sex-specific risk," said lead author Elizabeth Andrews, doctoral candidate at the varsity. Alzheimer's disease is the primary cause of death for individuals with Down syndrome, who are genetically predisposed to develop the condition earlier in life. While previous studies observed that women with Down syndrome may live longer with dementia than men with Down syndrome, few have looked closely at whether the underlying brain pathology differs by sex. The findings, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia, can shape how we understand and approach treatments for Alzheimer's in this population and beyond. "If women with Down syndrome are further along in disease progression at the time of diagnosis, it could change how we time interventions and interpret outcomes in clinical trials," said Elizabeth Head, Professor of pathology at UC Irvine. "This research could help tailor therapies more effectively, not just for people with Down syndrome, but for the broader Alzheimer's population as well," Head added.

'Godfather Of AI' Reveals Bold Strategy To Save Humanity From AI Domination
Geoffrey Hinton, the British-Canadian computer scientist known as the "Godfather of AI", has expressed concerns that the technology he helped develop could potentially wipe out humanity. According to Mr Hinton, there's a 10-20% chance of this catastrophic outcome. Moreover, he's sceptical about the approach tech companies are taking to mitigate this risk, particularly in ensuring humans remain in control of AI systems. "That's not going to work. They're going to be much smarter than us. They're going to have all sorts of ways to get around that," Mr Hinton said at Ai4, an industry conference in Las Vegas, as per CNN. The scientist also warned that future AI systems could manipulate humans with ease, likening it to an adult bribing a child with candy. His warning comes after recent examples have shown AI systems deceiving, cheating, and stealing to achieve their goals, such as an AI model attempting to blackmail an engineer after discovering personal information in an email. Instead of trying to dominate AI, Mr Hinton suggested instilling "maternal instincts" in AI models, allowing them to genuinely care about people, even as they surpass human intelligence. "AI systems will very quickly develop two subgoals, if they're smart: One is to stay alive… (and) the other subgoal is to get more control. There is good reason to believe that any kind of agentic AI will try to stay alive," Mr Hinton said. He believes fostering a sense of compassion in AI is of paramount importance. At the conference, he pointed to the mother-child relationship as a model, where a mother's instincts and social pressure drive her to care for her baby, despite the baby's limited intelligence and control over her. While he expressed uncertainty about the technical specifics, he stressed that researchers must work on this challenge. "That's the only good outcome. If it's not going to parent me, it's going to replace me. These super-intelligent caring AI mothers, most of them won't want to get rid of the maternal instinct because they don't want us to die," he added. Geoffrey Hinton is renowned for his groundbreaking work on neural networks, which laid the foundation for the current AI revolution. In May 2023, he quit his job at Google so he could freely speak out about the risks of AI.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that the Maharashtra government played no role in sending the elephant Mahadevi (also known as Madhuri) to the rescue centre and that was the Supreme Court's decision. Speaking at CNN-News18's Townhall, Fadnavis told journalist Anand Narasimhan that after a huge uproar the government stepped in with a solution. 'After a huge uproar from the people, we decided to step in with a solution to develop an ecosystem, which is a rescue centre (similar to the rescue centre where she currently resides) near the math". The 36-year-old female elephant was being kept by a Jain monastery in Nandani, Kolhapur, for over three decades. Authorities and animal welfare groups raised serious concerns over her well-being. Veterinarians reported conditions like arthritis, foot rot and psychological distress. In response, PETA India filed a petition. A High-Powered Committee (HPC) appointed by the environment ministry backed the plea and the Bombay High Court in July 2025 ruled that Mahadevi should be relocated to a proper sanctuary for rehabilitation. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision by the end of July. She was relocated to Vantara's Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat. X-rays showed fractures and arthritis in her front feet. The welfare team has drawn up a treatment plan aimed at tackling the root causes, easing her pain, improving mobility and aiding long-term recovery. While awaiting lab results, a nutritionist is preparing a customised diet.
