More violence disrupts PSG's Champions League celebrations

BreakingNews.ie2 days ago

Authorities have detained another 79 people as violence continued to disrupt Paris Saint-Germain's celebrations of their historic Champions League victory, police in the French capital said.
After more than 100,000 people welcomed the return of PSG players to Paris after their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday, a second night of scattered incidents ensued.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told RTL radio that groups gathered close to the Parc des Princes stadium and on the Champs-Elysees after midnight, causing trouble.
He said some used barriers to block the main ring road surrounding Paris for a while, and other troublemakers set off fireworks and tried to vandalise shops.
Mr Nunez said calm was restored at 3.30am on Monday.
PSG had earlier staged an open-top bus parade in the city for its fans. The winners of European club football's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and headed to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Elysees, which saw violence and clashes with riot police overnight on Saturday.

Police made more than 500 arrests across France on Saturday night.
'The overall number of arrests is very high, it is completely unprecedented,' Mr Nunez said.
Celebrations were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas.
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a street party after the final, police said, and a man in his 20s was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car.

Cesc Fabregas says he believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid links to Inter

The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer. ⚫🔵✍️#ForzaInter #WelcomePetar — Inter ⭐⭐ (@Inter_en) June 4, 2025 'I really believe in Como's long-term project,' he said. 'I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition. 'The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. 'We've become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club but with big, very big ambitions for the future.' Inter meanwhile have signed Croatia international Petar Sucic from Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder, who has seven international caps, played last season on loan at Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Lois Boisson rides tide of home support to claim French Open semi spot

Carried by a passionate wave of home support on Court Philippe Chatrier, France's Lois Boisson produced another astounding upset to continue her dream run at Roland Garros. The 22-year-old world No361 has become the first wild card in the open era to reach the women's singles semi-finals at the French Open. This remarkable breakthrough by Boisson continues to astonish. So many French players in the past have crumbled under the pressure on home soil in recent times, with no singles winner here since Mary Pierce 25 years ago. Even Amelie Mauresmo, a former world No1 and Wimbledon champion, used to struggle on the Paris clay, going no further than the quarter-finals. In stark contrast, Boisson is rising to the occasion on the biggest stage in her country with a steely composure that belies this being her grand-slam debut. After knocking out the No3 seed Jessica Pegula from a set down on Monday she produced another fightback from two first-set points down in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over the No6 seed Mirra Andreeva.

Russell Martin strikes next Rangers manager agreement as appointment timeline and backroom staff revealed

Record Sport can reveal that the former Southampton boss has agreed in principle to become Philippe Clement's successor Russell Martin's imminent return to Ibrox has been agreed in principle and is expected to be confirmed in the next 48 hours. Record Sport understands Martin's appointment as Philippe Clement's successor is now in the final stages pending contracts being rubber stamped and the make-up of his backroom team approved, ratified and signed off by the Ibrox club's new board. ‌ It's understood Martin's long term assistant boss Matty Gill has been lined up to follow the 39-year-old north of the border, after the pair linked up together at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton. ‌ And, as we revealed last week, former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross has also been earmarked for a key role in the coaching staff if Martin lands the top job, with further additions expected. Martin and his men have emerged as the clear front-runners following a major plot twist in talks with rival target Davide Ancelotti. It's understood, over the last two days, Ancelloti has suddenly appeared to cool on the prospect of making the move from Madrid to Glasgow's south side. Ancelotti had seemed in pole position after holding a series of discussions with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, football adviser to the San Francisco 49ers. It's understood incoming chairman Andrew Cavenagh has also been involved in the final stages of those talks. But sources in Milan have now confirmed to Record Sport that Ancelotti's camp began to stall on a move to Ibrox at the start of this week. ‌ The timing seems significant as it coincides with dramatic developments at the San Siro and the news that Simone Inzaghi is on the verge of quitting Champions League runners-up Inter Milan for a lucrative move to Saudi outfit Al-Hilal. Inter immediately set their sights on Como boss Cesc Fabregas to fill Inzaghi's shoes - and that appears to have been a game changer in terms of Ancelotti's own position. ‌ The 36-year-old - who is ready to take his first steps into management after following his father Carlo around some of the greatest clubs in Europe - had initially been linked with Como when it seemed Fabregas might be on his way to Bayer Leverkusen. Reports of Como's interest in Ancelotti began to circulate almost immediately after it was leaked to media outlets in Madrid that Rangers were also involved in advanced discussions with Ancelotti Jr. But within days it was confirmed that the Bundesliga big guns had turned to former Manchester United flop Erik ten Hag to replace Xabi Alonso - who has taken over from Ancelotti Snr at the Bernabeu. ‌ Those managerial dominoes appeared to fall in favour of Rangers and their pursuit of the young Ancelotti. But that all changed again over the weekend when Como learned of Inter's interest in Fabregas. Martin, meanwhile, has been holding off on accepting an offer to take over from Ruud van Nistlerooy at Leicester City while the uncertainty has played out across the continent. ‌ And he now appears to be on the brink of turning his back on the King Power to finalise a move to Rangers instead. Ibrox sources have remained adamant throughout that the process is not yet complete and that further interviews have been scheduled for this week. But that messaging has begun to soften. And with Martin apparently emerging as the last man standing and a financial agreement already thrashed out, the former Scotland international could be in place at Auchenhowie before the weekend. Rangers players will report back to the club's Auchenhowie HQ on June 23 to begin pre-season preparations which means Cavenagh's new look regime is already racing against the clock ahead of a major squad rebuild and the beginning of the next campaign.
