Who was Ashiq Hussain? Pakistani Uber driver dies after falling from firefighter's ladder in Brooklyn
Ashiq Hussain, a 53-year-old Pakistani Uber driver and father of four, died in a fall while trying to escape a fire in his Brooklyn apartment on Monday.
The early morning fire broke out in the building housing Hussain's apartment, located above the M9 Deli and Grill in Brooklyn.
Hussain had just returned home from a night shift when he noticed the fire and alerted his two roommates, who were able to get out safely.
Seeing thick smoke filled his top-floor unit, Hussain and another person attempted to climb down a ladder deployed by the FDNY. But, the ladder's upper section buckled and Hussain fell from the top of the ladder to the sidewalk below.

'He was trying to breathe from the outside because inside there was a lot of smoke,' his cousin, Mazhar Iqbal, told the Daily News, who had spoken with Hussain moments before the fall.
'I told him: 'Be careful, soon the firemen are going to come and you can hang up the phone.' I told him: 'Be careful when you're going out to the ladder,' because he is older and he was overweight.'
Emergency crews quickly rushed to his side, but Hussain succumbed to his injuries. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as blunt-force trauma. The FDNY has launched an internal investigation and removed the ladder from service.
'They did really wrong. They took the head of the family,' Iqbal told the New York Daily News. 'They ruined the family's life.'
Sadly, after years of hard work, Hussain had finally saved enough to bring his wife and children to the U.S. 'He actually came in recently and told us he was so happy his family was finally coming,' said the owner of M9 Deli, who knew him well. 'He was a very nice, respectful person… It's tragic. Tragic.'

BSF foils narcotics smuggling bid on Punjab border; seizes heroin
ANI 12 Jun 2025, 00:03 GMT+10 Amritsar (Punjab) [India], June 11 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics into India via drones from Pakistan, leading to the recovery of heroin and a drone along the Punjab border. Acting on specific intelligence, BSF troops deployed robust anti-drone measures and seized 529 grams of heroin near Havelian village in Tarn Taran district. In a separate operation near Roranwala Kalan in Amritsar district, they recovered a DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone, suspected to have been used for cross-border smuggling, said the BSF. Additionally, in a joint operation with the Punjab Police near Wan village in Tarn Taran district, the BSF seized 560 grams of heroin. The heroin packets were packed in colored tape, fitted with illuminating strips and nylon loops--a clear indication of drone-dropped consignments from Pakistan. Swift action of BSF troops once again foiled Pakistani smugglers' nefarious plans to push narcotics into India via drones. Further investigations are underway. (ANI)

Court dismisses bail plea of travel vlogger held for spying
A local court in Haryana's Hisar on Wednesday dismissed the bail application of travel vlogger Jyoti Rani, who was arrested over three weeks ago on charges of spying and passing on secret information to Pakistani intelligence operatives. Moving the bail application in the court of Judicial Magistrate Sunil Kumar, Ms. Rani's counsel, Kumar Mukesh, had argued that the FIR in the case was based on the interrogation of the accused prior to her arrest and was 'liable to be quashed, as it in violation of Article 20(3) of the Constitution of India'. Opposing her bail plea, the police contended that the accused, if released, could influence the investigation.
