Chelsea's Maresca hails 'great triumph' in winning Club World Cup

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca insisted winning the Club World Cup meant as much as winning the Champions League after his side beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the first edition of FIFA's new competition on Sunday.

'I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League,' said Maresca after adding the trophy to the UEFA Conference League title his team won in May.
Maresca – 'The best teams in the world'
Maresca only took over at Chelsea a year ago but was previously on the coaching staff under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when they won the Champions League in 2023.
'I was lucky to be on the coaching staff of a team that won the Champions League a few years ago, but this competition features the best teams in the world and I think we can value it on the same level,' said the Italian.
'It is a great triumph for us and it will allow the Chelsea fans to have that on our shirt for the next four years, so it is a source of pride.'
Maresca said he instructed his players to go out and take the game to PSG from the off — they went on to net all three goals in the first half with Cole Palmer netting a brace before Joao Pedro added his name to the scoresheet.
'The message was to let them understand that we were here to win the game and I think in the first 10 minutes we showed them that,' Maresca said.
'That set the tone of the game, and then the quality of the players was also important.'
England international Palmer was named player of the match after bagging a brace and setting up Joao Pedro's goal.
The 23-year-old therefore lived up to his superstar billing — his face has appeared on billboards around New York advertising the tournament, alongside the likes of Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.
'The team showed fire'
'To score the goals was a great feeling, as was the way the team showed fire out there — the gaffer's game plan was spot on,' he said.
'I just try to do my job every time I go onto the pitch and hopefully I will continue.
'I have seen the billboards in Times Square and outside Madison Square Garden and it is obviously a nice feeling to be alongside those players,' he added.

Bok coach Rassie Erasmus last week said that he hoped Kolisi would finally make his way back from a number of injury niggles that have kept him out of their opening three games, in time for their clash against Georgia in Mbombela on Saturday. It is the Boks' final game of the incoming series and last chance for players to get a run ahead of the Rugby Championship which kicks off next month, so a team featuring a slew of inexperienced players, as well as a couple of old heads, is expected to be named on Tuesday afternoon. If Kolisi is passed fit he will likely start, but whether it will be in his regular No 6 jersey, or at the back of the scrum, where he featured a number of times for the Sharks over the past URC season, remains to be seen. When asked whether he saw Kolisi as an eighthman option before the season started, Erasmus said that he preferred him at flank, but with Wiese possibly out for a number of Rugby Championship games, it could force the Bok mentor's hand. At Monday's press conference in Mbombela, Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids was quizzed on the possibility of Kolisi featuring at No 8, and he admitted that he is an option, but that they also have a few other players who could slot in. Versatile options 'We have versatile players in our squad, like Siya, who has played No 6 primarily for us, but also at No 8 for the Sharks,' said Davids. 'We also have guys like Evan Roos and Marco van Staden who have played in that position. There are different players that we can look at that we feel will have the ability to fill that position. 'It will depend on the mix-up of the loose trio and the mix-up of the pack, and that will determine where our selection will go.' Davids also echoed the sentiments of Erasmus after the Italian match, in backing Wiese, and said that the team would look to support him in whatever capacity they could no matter what the outcome of his DC is. 'For us, it is unfortunate that Jasper got on the wrong side of the law. We are a physical team. We try to do things with as much intent as possible. That is part of our DNA,' explained Davids. 'We support Jasper in whatever decision it will be, and we trust the disciplinary hearing committee's judgment on the issue. We work very hard as a team on staying on the right side of the law. That is why we have Jaco Peyper here to make sure we coach and train within the law. 'There is a good awareness from the players on understanding the risk from a technical point of view to execute what they need to do. World Rugby has laid out the procedure that they will follow and we trust the decision and the approaches.'

Jasper Wiese comments after red card
World Rugby has confirmed that Jasper Wiese will appear before a Disciplinary Committee for a full hearing after he was shown a straight red card for what was deemed to be a headbutt on Italian prop Danilo Fischetti on Saturday. The disciplinary hearing will take place on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, and Wiese is expected to face a ban that spans several weeks, especially considering his disciplinary history. Speaking after Saturday's match, Wiese himself admitted that fault lay with him after this incident. 'I know I let the team down. Well done to the guys for grinding it out – it's not easy playing with 14, and they showed real grit today. A silly moment from me,' he admitted. The big No 8 has only recently recovered from injury, and there will now be a big job for the likes of Jean-Luc du Preez and Evan Roos to cover eighthman, while the Springboks may also need to consider shifting a utility forward to the back of the scrum. 'We have versatile players in our squad,' Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids commented. 'Players like Evan (Roos), Siya (Kolisi) and Marco (van Staden) can cover No 8, so we have a few players who can play there for us.' Davids otherwise confirmed that all players are fit and available for selection, with Erasmus set to name the match-23 on Tuesday.
