The Centre has decided to directly fund two key infrastructure projects in Amaravati—marking the first such intervention in Andhra Pradesh's capital city after years of supporting it through loans.
According to ET, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will construct a Rs 1,458 crore common central secretariat and a Rs 1,329 crore residential complex in the government complex zone of Velagapudi along the Krishna river.
'So far the funds have been in the form of loans. The two projects will be the first direct intervention,' a senior state government official cited by ET. These projects are considered a significant show of support for Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's vision for Amaravati, particularly as the NDA government leans on Naidu's Telugu Desam Party as a key ally.
The department of expenditure has given in-principle approval for both projects, proposed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Since each project exceeds Rs 500 crore, final clearance must come from the Public Investment Board (PIB), which will appraise the proposals in its upcoming meeting chaired by the Secretary (Expenditure).
Previously, the Centre had facilitated close to Rs 26,000 crore in loans for Amaravati's development, including Rs 15,000 crore from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB), Rs 11,000 crore from HUDCO, and a likely Rs 5,000 crore loan from German bank KfW.

Amaravati's revival comes after years of stalled construction. First conceptualised post the 2014 bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the 'people's capital' project was halted in 2019 by the YSRCP government.
But with Naidu returning to power, the city's relaunch began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the renewed capital development on May 2.
Naidu's vision includes an architectural landmark in the form of a 250-metre inverted lily-shaped assembly tower that will offer panoramic views of Amaravati and neighbouring Vijayawada.
The tower, equipped with a visitor's gallery, will remain accessible to the public outside legislative sessions.
Amaravati, planned over 217.23 sq. km, will feature nine sub-cities, each with a distinct theme, including a dedicated government district. This zone will host the legislative assembly, high court, the new central secretariat, and four "head of department" towers, each 42 stories tall. The secretariat building itself is planned as a 50-story structure.
Urban Development Minister P Narayana said, 'Every city is identified with a building. The assembly tower will be an iconic building and with which Amaravati will be identified.' To avoid the fate of underpopulated capitals like Naya Raipur and Gandhinagar, Amaravati's planners aim to attract non-polluting industries to generate economic activity and settlement.
With the Centre now committing direct funding, Naidu's ambitious Amaravati project appears to be gaining critical momentum after years of uncertainty.

Israel-Iran conflict: Tehran claims first hypersonic missile strike on Israel; what is Fattah-1?

The Israeli Iron Dome air defence system fires to intercept missiles during an Iranian attack over Tel Aviv, Israel, early Wednesday (Image credit: AP) Iran has claimed possession of hypersonic missiles and has begun deploying them against Israel, reported news agency AP. The ongoing Iran–Israel conflict escalated on Wednesday when Iran fired a Fattah-1 hypersonic missile at Tel Aviv. The attack came shortly after US President Donald Trump demanded Tehran's unconditional surrender. On Thursday, Iran released a video showing the launch of the Fattah-1 missile aimed at Tel Aviv. Powerful explosions were reported in both Tel Aviv and in Iranian cities like Tehran and Karaj, following multiple missile attacks and retaliatory airstrikes. Iran Uses 'Undisclosed' Missiles In Operation True Promise III, Overwhelms Already Burdened Iron Dome This is not the first time Iran has used the Fattah-1 missile against Israel. Last year, Iran launched about 200 ballistic missiles under 'Operation True Promise II,' targeting two Israeli military bases and Mossad's headquarters, Israel's intelligence agency. What is the Fattah-1 missile? The Fattah-1 is Iran's first home-made hypersonic ballistic missile, introduced in 2023. It is named after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Iranian state media, the missile has a range of 1,400 kilometres and can penetrate any existing defence system. It reportedly reaches speeds up to Mach 14 (about 15,000 km/h), according to Reuters. Iranian state TV claims that Fattah-1 can target the enemy's most advanced anti-missile defences and represents a major breakthrough in missile technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? This makes them harder to track and stop. According to weapons expert Fabian Hinz, Iran's Fattah-1 missile likely uses a 'manoeuvrable reentry vehicle.' This means it can change direction during the final part of its flight, just before hitting the target, to avoid being shot down by defence systems. What are hypersonic missiles? Hypersonic weapons are defined as missiles that travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound. In modern warfare, experts say that hypersonic weapons must also be able to change direction during flight using advanced navigation systems. This makes them difficult to track and intercept using traditional missile defence systems. Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, which follow a predictable path, hypersonic missiles can fly at lower altitudes and change their direction mid-air. Jack Watling, a defence expert at the Royal United Services Institute, explained that radar systems struggle to detect hypersonic missiles in time, especially when terrain blocks their view. "They appear suddenly and leave very little time to respond," he said.

DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran sends legal notice to brother Kalanidhi over Sun TV shares

A serious dispute has erupted within the influential Sun Group family, with DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran sending a legal notice to his elder brother and media baron Kalanidhi Maran, alleging fraudulent practices related to share allotments, financial dealings, and regulatory to the legal notice, Dayanidhi Maran has accused Kalanidhi Maran and seven others of criminal breach of trust and cheating. The notice alleges that Kalanidhi Maran unlawfully allotted 12 lakh shares of the Sun TV Network Ltd. without proper valuation, fair consideration, or the mandatory consent of existing shareholders on September 15, 2003. The notice terms the allotment illegal and a betrayal of shareholder legal notice further claims that investments worth Rs 8,500 crore have been made in various domestic and international Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) funds and mutual funds, citing evidence from savings account records. These investments, the notice contends, have been made without disclosure or due authorisation. Dayanidhi Maran has also alleged that a red herring prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the National Stock Exchange (NSE), and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was misleading and based on fraudulent documentation. He claims this was done in connivance with lead managers in order to list the shares of Sun TV Network Ltd., thereby deceiving regulatory authorities and light of these allegations, Dayanidhi Maran has demanded that the shareholding of Sun TV Network Ltd. be restored to its original state as of 2003. He has also sought the return of all monetary benefits, dividends, assets and income which he claims were wrongfully received or appropriated since legal notice warns that failure to comply will compel Dayanidhi Maran to initiate appropriate civil, criminal, regulatory and enforcement proceedings.
