Seven projects to deliver more efficient, stable power to Sabah, Labuan
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also energy transition and water transformation minister, said the projects under his ministry involve substation upgrades, new grid line connections, and safety monitoring systems.
"(These are) designed to ensure reliable electricity supply across areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi, and Labuan," he said during the handover ceremony for the seven completed energy sector projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) here.
The PMU KKBU project, initiated under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), now benefits around 11,452 users in Tanjung Aru and Kota Kinabalu city.
It includes a building housing 132kV and 33kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and 132/33/11kV transformers, replacing the outdated 66/11kV system with no replacement parts available.
The project also supports a new 33kV cable connection to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, thus improving supply reliability to this strategic location.
Other completed projects include the 132kV Labuan–Sipitang Interconnection which was completed on Sept 2 last year, but awaiting the completion of Sarawak Energy's portion by September 2025.
"Once operational, it will enable the import of 30MW of power from Sarawak, with a grid capacity of up to 500MW, making it part of the Asean Power Grid linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Philippines," said Fadillah.
Another one is the RM31.3 million 33/11kV Ranau Main Distribution Substation (PPU) that was completed March last year and connects Ranau to the Sabah grid and reduces dependency on an 18MW diesel power plant, benefiting 15,620 users while cutting diesel subsidies.
Others are the RM30.02 million Batu Sapi PPU to address old system issues; RM42 million Protection Online Monitoring System with the installation of 15 km submarine fibre optic cables from Kampung Lambidan, Menumbok to Tanjung Aru and Labuan.
The RM50.011 million PMU at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) which has been operational since Aug 12 last year, raised load capacity from 93.51MW to 131.60MW, lowered SAIDI index, and reinforced 33kV distribution in Sulaman and Alamesra, benefiting over 5,000 users including UMS Hospital.
The RM6.3 million 11kV System Enhancement in Labuan, which was also completed in Nov last year, upgraded protection systems at PPU Rancha-Rancha, boosting infrastructure to support new developments in Labuan.

Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and a Sabah-based JSK Mantanani Island Resorts Sdn. Bhd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in marine biodiversity research, education in and around Mantanani Islands, off Kota Belud. The partnership marks a significant milestone in a journey that began in 2023, when the company took bold steps to address the ongoing poaching of nesting sea turtles on the island. Driven by concern over declining turtle numbers, the company sought technical guidance from UMS through its Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) for an integrated conservation programme. Managing Director Datuk Johnny Wong Chen Yee said the company island resort is not just about providing a memorable escape but deeply rooted in sustainable tourism and responsible stewardship of the environment. He said Mantanani, a jewel in the crown of Sabah's Marine biodiversity is one of Malaysia's most breath-taking natural treasures. 'However, as we all know, these precious ecosystems are facing unprecedented challenges — Climate change, unsustainable practices and pollution. 'We must actively participate in their preservation and restoration. 'Through this partnership, JSK Mantanani Island Resort and UMS will embark on a collaborative journey focused on two critical areas: Marine Life and Habitat Restoration,' he said at the signing. Johnny represented JSK Mantanani Island Resort Sdn Bhd while UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor for UMS at Chancellory building recently. Johnny said as Sabah continues to position itself as a global eco-tourism hub, such partnership is vital in ensuring marine biodiversity thrives in tandem with responsible development. The collaborative initiatives will encompass a range of vital activities, including: Seagrass restoration: Rejuvenating these crucial underwater meadows that serve as nurseries for countless species and act as significant carbon sinks. Sea turtle conservation: Protecting these magnificent creatures through monitoring nesting sites, rescuing injured turtles, and raising awareness about their plight. Coral reef rehabilitation: Working together to propagate and transplant corals, restoring the vibrant underwater gardens that are vital to marine life. Research and monitoring of marine biodiversity: Understanding the health of our marine ecosystems to inform effective conservation strategies. Community engagement: Empowering local communities with the knowledge and tools to become stewards of their own environment. Educational programs for their guests and the public: Raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation and inspiring action. 'We will soon launch a dedicated Wildlife Gallery at the resort, exhibiting educational specimens provided by the Sabah Wildlife Department. 'We are also proud to share that our turtle hatchery centre can hold up to 1,000 eggs – a vital step in protecting and increasing the local turtle population,' he said. Johnny said with support and advice from UMS marine scientists, his company obtained formal approval from the Sabah Wildlife Department to launch a turtle conservation initiative He said several JSK staff members were trained and appointed as Honorary Wildlife Rangers, enabling legal authorities to monitor beaches, relocate turtle nests, and manage the JSK Turtle Hatchery. 'This initiative bore fruit quickly, where two green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests have been protected to date, achieving a hatching success rate of over 90 per cent. 'Protecting Mantanani's natural heritage is core to our values. With UMS as our scientific partner, we can ensure that our efforts are effective, sustainable, and backed by solid data,' he said. Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim said the partnership is more than conservation, it's about building a resilient, informed, and science-driven approach to marine stewardship. Fadillah meets South Korea envoy, Romania ambassador on green energy
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof held separate courtesy meetings with South Korean President's Special Envoy Kim Young Choon and Romanian Ambassador to Malaysia Nineta Bǎrbulescu at Parliament today. The discussions focused on strengthening green energy partnerships and sustainable development. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Kim reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to advancing green energy and carbon reduction initiatives. 'We exchanged views on enhancing ASEAN-Korea cooperation, particularly in sustainable energy integration,' he shared on Facebook. Kim also confirmed South Korea's readiness to host the APEC Energy Ministers' Meeting in August. As Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner, Fadillah expressed hope for deeper collaboration in energy transition and water sector reforms. During the meeting with Bǎrbulescu, Fadillah commended Romania's progress in green energy despite its smaller population. 'Romania's dedication to renewable energy is commendable,' he said. Malaysia installs solar PV in 807 govt buildings, saves RM48m yearly
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 807 government buildings, including the Parliament, have been equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, generating 7.657 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced the initiative, which is expected to save RM48 million in electricity costs annually. The Parliament building alone now has a 1.5MW solar PV system, producing 1.9 gigawatt-hours of electricity yearly while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 1,465 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. 'This saves RM1 million annually in electricity bills and positions Malaysia among global leaders in large-scale solar adoption,' Fadillah said during the launch at Parliament. Beyond government buildings, 11,233 commercial and industrial sites have also installed solar PV systems, totaling 1,522.43MW in capacity. This has led to estimated savings of RM972 million in energy expenses. Fadillah urged collective action to meet Malaysia's climate goals, including a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The National Energy Transition Roadmap, launched in 2023, supports this shift by targeting a 32% emissions cut in the energy sector through renewable energy expansion. 'Solar PV installations on government buildings are a key part of this strategy,' he added.
