Sarawak Energy, DHL team up to uplift indigenous artisans

KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has partnered with DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei to empower indigenous artisans from Sarawak's rural communities to diversify their revenue streams through e-commerce and logistics support. Sarawak Energy said in a statement today that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on May 23 in Kuala Lumpur to formalise the Artisans Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Programme, which aims to bolster digital capabilities and expand market access for the artisans group. The MoU was signed by Sarawak Energy's SEB Power chief executive officer Bunyak Lunyong and DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Julian Neo. Sarawak Energy Senior Vice-President (Legal and Compliance), George Chapman; SEB Social Impact Management General Manager, Jiwari Abdullah; and DHL eCommerce Malaysia Managing Director, Saurabh Kumar were among those who witnessed the ceremony. Under the programme, 20 artisans from the Bakun and Murum communities in Sarawak will participate in a weeklong training session with DHL and TikTok Shop, covering e-commerce fundamentals, supply chain management, content creation and business scaling, to enable rural artisans to reach international markets. Speaking at the event, Lunyong said that combining DHL's logistics expertise with digital platforms would boost artisans' market visibility, provide continuous skill development, broaden customer access, and improve business acumen, leading to both social and economic empowerment. 'The partnership signifies a meaningful step forward in Sarawak Energy's commitment to responsible corporate citizenship, aligning with our social investment pillars and broader objective of creating enduring value for indigenous rural communities,' he said. Neo, meanwhile, expressed his hope that DHL's involvement in the programme would help to unlock rural artisans' growth potential while preserving their rich cultural heritage. 'We believe that global trade empowers small businesses and drives the economic mobility of communities. We are proud to work together with Sarawak Energy to provide indigenous artisans with the support and guidance they need to succeed across borders,' he added.

The partnership reinforces ongoing effort to support Southeast Asia's energy transition while advancing regional interconnectivity and sustainability efforts. The signing ceremony took place after the official opening of the Malaysian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, which was officiated by Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Sarawak Energy's group chief executive officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, signed the MOU alongside JBIC's managing executive director, Sekine Hiroki. Also present were Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry Liew Chin Tong; Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, Datuk Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany; MITI Deputy Secretary General (Industry) Datuk Hanafi Sakri; and Malaysia Pavilion director Ellyza Mastura Amhad Hanipiah. 'Sarawak is stepping up its plan to deeply integrate Borneo into the ASEAN power grid,' Awang Tengah commented during a press conference after the MOU signing. 'Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond. 'Besides renewable energy, Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), oil and gas, petrochemical products, and aerospace. 'These developments complement the sustainable oil and gas sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities with advanced technologies and sustainable practices.' The Sarawak Deputy Premier said this is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity. 'Today's signing of an agreement between Sarawak Energy and the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation will partly enhance our collaboration. 'In this respect, I would like to invite more Japanese companies to invest and participate in Sarawak's economic development agenda.' Aligned with the ASEAN Power Grid initiative and the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), the partnership contributes meaningfully to long-term sustainability and strengthens regional cooperation. Both organisations will engage in ongoing dialogue and explore joint opportunities that support Sarawak Energy's long-term growth strategy and Southeast Asia's broader decarbonisation efforts. The MOU signing was coordinated with the support of the federal Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, and Sarawak's Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, through the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak.

Amend Electricity Ordinance to protect new tenants, Pujut rep tells DUN

Yii says Sarawak Energy currently has the authority to reject electricity supply applications from new occupants if there are outstanding bills left by previous owners or tenants. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (May 23): Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang has called on the Sarawak government to amend the Electricity Ordinance to enhance service delivery and protect the interests of consumers. Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today, Yii highlighted an issue affecting new tenants and homeowners. He pointed out that Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) currently has the authority to reject electricity supply applications from new occupants if there are outstanding bills left by previous owners or tenants. 'This situation creates difficulties for many homeowners and new tenants who have no connection to the previous occupants, and it is unfair for someone to bear another person's debt. 'I urge for this ordinance to be amended so that if a new applicant can provide proof, such as a tenancy agreement or a statutory declaration, showing they have no ties to the defaulter, then Sarawak Energy should allow the reconnection of electricity supply,' he said. He also recommended the introduction of prepaid electricity meters, particularly for rental properties, saying the system offers several advantages. These include preventing arrears through upfront credit payments, reducing disputes between landlords, tenants, and Sarawak Energy, and encouraging responsible electricity usage. 'Most importantly, prepaid meters are more tamper-resistant and help reduce electricity theft and losses to Sarawak Energy,' he added. On a separate note, Yii raised concerns over delays and high costs faced by new entrepreneurs in Miri in obtaining piped gas connections from Sarawak Gas Distribution Sdn Bhd (SGD), a subsidiary of Petros. 'Applications currently go through multiple stages without clear guidelines or defined timelines. 'This can cause delays in operations, financial losses, and in some cases, the cancellation of business plans,' he said. To address this, Yii urged the relevant ministry and SGD to review the application process and introduce a fast-track mechanism for commercial users, including installation incentives for SMEs. 'We have successfully gained control over our gas resources, but that success must be translated into tangible benefits for the people and local entrepreneurs,' he said. adam yii DUN electricity bill Electricity Ordinance Sarawak Energy

Abang Jo calls for Sarawak Energy restructuring to boost expansion plans

Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said SEB is in talks to supply electricity to Brunei, aside from Sabah and southern Philippines. (Bernama pic) KUCHING : Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has called for the restructuring of the state-owned power generation and supply company, Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) to support the state's expansion in energy production and supply. He said SEB's board of directors should look into the state's Electricity Ordinance, which governs the utility company, in order to establish a separate entity dedicated to ramp up energy production for the broader market. 'I leave it to the SEB board to look into this, and I hope that you (the board) can provide me with a (proposal) paper by the end of this year,' he said in a speech at the SEB Vendors Excellence Awards 2025 here last night. Abang Johari said the proposed restructuring of SEB aligns with Sarawak's target to generate 10 gigawatts (GW) of energy production by 2030 and 15GW by 2035, as well as working towards achieving Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's aspiration to position the state as the core of the Asean energy grid. 'The prime minister has identified Sarawak as a central player in the Asean energy grid, and we are working towards that,' he said. He added that Anwar had also proposed that Sarawak supply power to the southern part of the Philippines once the mission to supply to Sabah is accomplished by year-end. Additionally, Abang Johari revealed that SEB is in final discussions to supply electricity to Brunei. Plans are also under way to extend the supply network to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, creating an energy supply loop across the Asean region. He said the regional expansion would open up new opportunities for SEB's vendors to enter other Asean countries to meet the growing demand for energy supply, and this requires more talented people. 'This is why professionalism among our vendors is important. Once you reach the standard set by SEB, the job will come to you. 'It is also vital that the vendor ecosystem stays in tandem with the expectations of the main employer,' he added.
