Alabama baseball tumbles in new Top 25 rankings after latest SEC series loss
Two weeks after Alabama baseball rose to No. 8 in the nation in all the major Top 25 polls and rankings, the Crimson Tide are skidding a bit in the hyper competitive SEC.
After suffering back-to-back series losses -- first to Auburn and then to unranked Mississippi State over the weekend -- Alabama (29-8 overall, 8-7 SEC) tumbled in Monday's new Top 25 polls and rankings.
Rob Vaughn's team went 2-2 last week and fell seven spots to No. 21 in Baseball America's new Top 25 rankings. The Crimson Tide also fell seven spots to No. 20 in Perfect Game's Top 25.
Baseball America said of Alabama:
"Alabama's bats were held in check for the vast majority of the weekend, but the biggest positive was fireballer Riley Quick's start in which he collected seven strikeouts and allowed just one run in 5.1 innings."
Both the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and D1 Baseball kept Alabama in the top 15 at No. 15. The Tide fell five spots in the Coaches Poll and are ranked one spot below UC Irvine (25-8) and one spot ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners (25-10).
SEC team vaults to No. 1 in new Week 10 college baseball Top 25 polls
For the second straight week, there's a new team in the top spot across the Top 25 rankings. The Texas Longhorns (29-5 overall, 13-2 SEC) climbed to No. 1 after taking two of three from Kentucky in Lexington. The Horns jumped the Arkansas Razorbacks (32-5), who dropped two of three to the Georgia Bulldogs (32-6) over the weekend in Athens. UGA is ranked No. 3 by Baseball America and Perfect Game.
Arkansas fell to No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and D1 Baseball rankings, and to No. 4 in Perfect Game and Baseball America.
Alabama baseball schedule 2025
The Crimson Tide welcome UAB (19-17) to Sewell-Thomas Stadium in midweek play Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. The game can be streamed via SEC Network+.
Alabama returns to SEC play Thursday when they travel to Baton Rouge to face the No. 7 LSU Tigers (31-6, 10-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday's series opener will be televised on ESPNU, while Saturday's finale can be seen on SEC Network. LSU was swept by Auburn (26-10) over the weekend at Plainsman Park.

Former Iowa basketball assistant reportedly lands new role in SEC Former Iowa basketball standout and recent Hawkeye assistant coach Matt Gatens is reportedly set for a new gig in the SEC. According to Justin Hokanson of Auburn Live win On3, Gatens is joining Bruce Pearl's staff at Auburn as the Tigers' general manager. Gatens would help oversee and influence transfer portal recruiting, high school recruiting, NIL requirements, scouting and roster strategy. Gatens' ties to Bruce Pearl and the Auburn program date back to his work as a graduate assistant with Auburn during the 2017-18 season when the Tigers won the SEC championship. Gatens' father, Mike Gatens, was a close friend of Pearl during Pearl's time as an assistant at Iowa from 1986-1992. The 35-year-old spent each of the past three seasons as an assistant coach on Fran McCaffery's staff. But, after McCaffery's dismissal, Gatens was not retained on staff by new Iowa head men's basketball coach Ben McCollum. Prior to his three seasons as an assistant coach in Iowa City, Gatens spent four seasons on Drake's coaching staff. Gatens served as director of operations his first two years at Drake before being elevated to an assistant coach in his last two seasons. The former Iowa Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at Iowa City High School, Gatens was a four-year starter for the Hawkeyes from 2009-12. His final two seasons were McCaffery's first two as Iowa's head coach. During Gatens' senior season, Iowa advanced to the NIT for its first postseason appearance under McCaffery and for its first postseason appearance in six seasons. Gatens was a two-time All-Big Ten selection, two-time team captain, two-time academic all-conference honoree, recipient of the 2012 Chris Street Award, and voted to the 2009 Big Ten All-Freshman team. Gatens amassed 1,635 points and 239 3-pointers ranking 10th and third, respectively, in Iowa history. In 128 career games, he averaged 12.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals per contest. Although Auburn couldn't quite get over the hump to repeat as the National Champions this golf season, the Tigers best golfer, sophomore Jackson Koivun, ended his extraordinary season with a coveted piece of hardware. The two-time SEC Golfer of the Year finished in fourth place overall during the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships, giving him more than enough points to surpass the 20 total needed to acquire a PGA Tour Card through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program. Advertisement The program, which is designed to award juniors who accumulate 20 points through played events during their first three years of college golf, was finished by Koivun in just two seasons. Now with immediate eligibility to play PGA Tour events, the 20-year-old could choose to end his Tigers career after just two short years if he opts to become a professional. But Koivun, who has vocally pronounced his love for the Plains in the past, recently told Golfweek he would delay defer his card until 2026, again stating "he loves Auburn" before stating how he believes college golf "is in such a good spot right now and it's going to continually prepare [him] for the PGA Tour." Koivun is now the third collegiate golfer to earn his PGA Card through the accelerated program. Alabama native and former Vanderbilt star Gordon Sargent and former Florida State golfer Luke Clanton are the only other golfers to successfully finish the program. Alabama star Justin Lebron reportedly makes decision amid transfer portal buzz Alabama baseball star Justin Lebron is reportedly staying put after helping the Crimson Tide to their best regular season finish in over 20 years. According to a report from Jake Mckeever of College Baseball Report, Lebron will return to Tuscaloosa for his junior season in 2026 "despite rumors of (transfer) portal entrance and tampering." The 20-year-old shortstop, who came to Alabama from Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Fla., is one of three players who won't be leaving their respective SEC schools for another program via the transfer portal, Mckeever reported. Kentucky Wildcats shortstop Tyler Bell and Mississippi State third baseman Ace Reese are the two others. Lebron has been a foundational piece for Rob Vaughn in his first two seasons as the Crimson Tide's head coach. He batted .319 with a team-high 18 home runs and 72 RBIs to go with 18 doubles and 17 stolen bases this past season. Lebron started all 58 games as Alabama went 41-18 overall, recording its first 40-win regular season since 2002. Lebron, a potential No. 1 overall pick in next year's MLB draft, led the SEC in RBIs and was tied for third in the conference in doubles with MSU's Reese and Texas Longhorns shortstop Jalin Flores. Lebron placed 10th in the SEC in both home runs and stolen bases and was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award in 2025. Neither Lebron nor Yea Alabama, the school's official NIL entity, have made an official announcement but could do so in the coming days. The entity has made several announcements regarding Alabama athletes and scheduling news, including the recent decision by Crimson Tide basketball guard Labaron Philon to forgo the NBA draft. Vaughn will be returning to Alabama in 2026 after signing a contract extension following reports linking him to the Texas A&M job. The Aggies fired Michael Earley after only one season.
