Who is Dont'e Thornton? Meet the Raiders rookie WR turning heads in training camp
The Las Vegas Raiders drafted two wide receivers during the 2025 NFL draft, one of which was Tennessee product, Dont'e Thornton.
Thornton was taken in the fourth round of April's draft, two rounds after Las Vegas took fellow wide receiver and TCU product, Jack Bech. Thornton began his college career at Oregon but transferred to Tennessee in 2023.
In his four years in college (two at Oregon, two at Tennessee), Thornton caught 65 passes for 1,426 yards and 10 touchdowns. Thornton finished his college career with 26 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns.
How has Dont'e Thornton looked this offseason?
While Thornton was expected to be a project at the next level, he has actually proven to be ahead of schedule.
"Thornton was still thought to need plenty of polish to become a productive pro receiver," Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal said of Thornton during OTAs. "His college offense wasn't too sophisticated."
"At OTAs, however, his footwork at the line of scrimmage appeared more advanced than advertised and his route running looked crisp. He could be further along than suspected," Bonsignore concluded.
'Dont'e Thornton, the dude we drafted from Tennessee, the big receiver,' Raiders star Maxx Crosby said of Thornton after OTAs. '6-foot-4, another freak, I think he might be 6-foot-5. Runs a 4.30 (in the 40-yard dash)…. It's crazy because a kid like that, he had success in college, but he hasn't hit his full potential yet. Seeing him on the field and realizing what he can be, from a player perspective, is like holy s***, this dude could be something serious.'
Thornton has continued turning heads at training camp.
'Dont'e continues to do stuff… He's made tough catches over the middle. He's caught the slant routes where he's getting banged around. And he's comfortable with it,' head coach Pete Carroll said of the rookie during training camp.
Is Dont'e Thornton a starter?
Thanks to his impressive showing this offseason, Thornton was listed as a starter on the Raiders' first unofficial depth chart of 2025.

Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson shine for Steelers in preseason opener
Aaron Rodgers recently said "preseason football is not necessarily real football." And he's right. Still, in August, preseason football is the closest thing we have to real football. And, on Saturday night, the two Steelers quarterbacks who played against the Jaguars did a pretty good job playing not necessarily real football. With Mason Rudolph taking only 15 snaps and Skylar Thompson handling 51, both performed very well. Rudolph, who got the start, completed nine of 10 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Passer rating? 135.0. With rookie Will Howard injured, Thompson handled the rest of the game. He completed 20 of 28 passes, generating 233 yards and three touchdown passes. Rating? 132.0. "Good to be back in the black and gold, man," Rudolph said after the game in a one-question press conference. (It was one more question than coach Mike Tomlin got.) Ideally, neither Rudolph nor Thompson (nor Howard) will handle anything more than garbage time this season. But maybe, if one or more of them are needed to play, the cause won't already be lost.

Commanders RB Gives Jayden Daniels Slight Edge Over Chargers Star
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After spending the first seven years of his career with the LA Chargers, Austin Ekeler embarked on a new journey in the NFL last year. Having gotten to see one of the league's top young talents in Jayden Daniels up close, he gave him a slight edge over his former teammate. During his time with the Chargers, Ekeler got to play with another dynamic young quarterback in Justin Herbert. He had a lot of success in LA, breaking 1,000 scrimmage yards on four separate occasions. Ekeler didn't have the start he wanted to in Washington, only appearing in 12 games. However, he is eager to provide a boost this season in hopes of helping the Commanders contend in the NFC. Photo by/Getty Images While recently appearing on YouTuber Matt King's 4th & Fore show, Ekeler was asked his thoughts on some of the quarterbacks he's played alongside in the NFL. When asked to pick between Daniels and Herbert, he went with the Commanders' star due to him being a dual threat. "I think Jayden's more dynamic, just his running ability," Ekeler said. "It gives him a little bit more of a factor to take over the game. Where if nothing's there, he can still go make guys miss and he's still flying down the field. Where I think Justin relies a little bit more on his arm." Ekeler also raved about playing with a QB who can pull off a big play at any moment with his arm or legs. "It's awesome to watch these games, the games are so exciting," he continued. "We're players but we still have fun watching everything." Austin Ekeler picks between Jayden Daniels & Justin Herbert as the better quarterback 👀 — Matt King (@yappmatt) August 9, 2025 Ekeler isn't the only one who views Daniels in a higher tier than Herbert. In ESPN's poll ranking the NFL's top QBs, Daniels (No. 5) finished two spots ahead of the Chargers star (No.7). Depending on how things unfold with Terry McLaurin, Washington might have a sizable void to fill. Being a dual threat himself in the backfield, Ekeler is someone capable of taking on more. However, for him to do so, he'll have to focus on staying healthy and on the field. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
