DAP rep challenges Akmal to rise above racial politics
PETALING JAYA : DAP's Kerk Chee Yee has challenged Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to rise above the politics of race and religion and become a leader for all Malaysians.
Kerk, who is the Melaka DAP publicity secretary and Ayer Keroh assemblyman, criticised Akmal for remarks that he said were 'divisive and regressive'.
'For the past two years, Akmal has found himself increasingly in the headlines, not for policies that unite, but for statements that polarise the people,' he said in a statement.
'Akmal had recently chided a few politicians, including myself, urging us to 'understand history' when we stated that Malaysia belongs to all Malaysians – a fact protected by our Federal Constitution since the nation's formation,' Kerk added.
He also referred to a resolution passed by 15 DAP branches in Melaka, which urged Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) not to field candidates who were 'extreme' in the next state election.
While they mentioned no names, the push against 'divisive' politicians appears to be aimed at the outspoken Akmal.
'Akmal (however) responded by stating that Umno will go all out to fight DAP, should DAP contest any state seat in the Jasin parliamentary constituency,' Kerk said.
Akmal is assemblyman for Merlimau, one of the five state seats under Jasin in Melaka. The remaining four state seats are Bemban, Rim, Serkam and Sungai Rambai.
Ethno-religious provocation
'At a time when Malaysia stands at a critical crossroad, facing economic uncertainty, frayed social cohesion, and a youth generation crying out for hope and opportunity, it is deeply disappointing that the Umno Youth chief appears more intent on playing the tired card of ethno-religious provocation instead of offering a vision of inclusive leadership,' Kerk said.
He urged Akmal to look to Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh as an example of how an Umno leader could govern inclusively.
'Since taking office as chief minister in April 2023 under the unity government in the state, he has adopted a no-nonsense approach to governance, preferring action over rhetoric,' Kerk said.
He added that Akmal, who 'has passion, youth, and a platform', now faced a clear choice.
'Will he use these assets to divide or to unite? The youth of Malaysia, regardless of race or religion, are not looking for leaders who shout louder; they are looking for those who think deeper,' he said.

Dr Akmal claims trial to 'public mischief' charge
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has pleaded not guilty to a charge of making a statement likely to cause fear or alarm to the public. Dr Akmal claimed trial before Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit at the Bukit Mertajam court here on Friday (Aug 22). Based on the charge sheet, he is accused of making statements on Facebook at about 3pm on Aug 11 that may cause public alarm and induce offences against public order. The statement was seen and heard by one Chong Wei Hoong at the Bukit Mertajam parliamentary service centre, leading to a complaint being lodged. The charge is punishable under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements conducing to public mischief. If convicted, he can be punished with up to two years' jail, a fine, or both. Counsel Aizat Azam, representing Dr Akmal, said his client was a professional with duties to carry out. "He is also a (Melaka) state executive committee chairman and an assemblyman. "He has two children (to provide for)," he said. Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, another member of Dr Akmal's defence team, urged for lower bail of RM2,000 as it was not a serious offence. "He (Dr Akmal) came to the court on his own. "Bail is only to ensure attendance in court, and he is here. "If the bail is set at a high amount, it will be like punishing him before the case is over," Imran said. Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah then set bail at RM5,000 with one surety. She also fixed Sept 22 for case management and submission of documents. Outside the courthouse, about 100 of Dr Akmal's supporters lined Jalan Betek in Taman Bukit Kecil, where the court is located, as they waited for him to post bail. He then posted bail.

Saifuddin's Dewan reply on Pamela gave no new info, says lawyer
Sangeet Kaur Deo said home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's insistence that investigations into her client's disappearance are ongoing 'rings hollow' as there are no signs that the probe is bearing results. PETALING JAYA : The lawyer of a woman who was allegedly abducted in April says home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail did not provide any fresh details when addressing the matter in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Saifuddin told the Dewan Rakyat that four Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials directly involved in investigating Pamela Ling's case had been questioned by the police, and that the vehicle believed to have been used in Ling's alleged kidnapping was traced to Bukit Kayu Hitam, a town in Kedah near the Thai border. In a statement, Ling's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, said Saifuddin provided 'no new information' yesterday. She also said Saifuddin's insistence that investigations were ongoing 'rings hollow' as there were no signs that the probe was bearing results. 'There have been zero leads uncovered, and Ling's family remains completely in the dark regarding any developments,' said Sangeet. 'Statements suggesting that investigations are ongoing are increasingly meaningless when, in reality, no tangible action or results have been shared.' Sangeet also said that information about the discovery of the car near the Thai border, and the police having recorded statements from 48 people as part of their probe, was provided months ago and was 'nothing new'. 'To repeat these same facts now only confirms the absence of any fresh developments,' said Sangeet. 'The lack of transparency, results, or meaningful updates only serves to prolong the family's suffering and erodes public confidence in the seriousness of the investigation into Ling's disappearance.' Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to MACC's headquarters to give a statement related to an ongoing investigation. MACC launched an investigation into Ling and her husband, Thomas Hah, in May last year for alleged corruption and money laundering offences, with MACC chief Azam Baki stating that Ling was a witness in a money laundering investigation. Police previously said that five vehicles were involved in the alleged abduction, three of which had used cloned number plates. About eight suspects are believed to have been involved in the alleged kidnapping, two of whom were seen in CCTV footage wearing police vests. In May, then Kuala Lumpur police chief, Rusdi Isa, said the police had not conducted any operations at the time of the incident, making it highly possible that Ling's abductors had worn the vests to impersonate policemen.
