India's chess capital is once again in the spotlight as Chennai prepares to host the 2025 edition of the Chennai Grand Masters — a tournament that has quickly become a landmark fixture in the global chess calendar.
Running from August 7 to 15, this year's edition promises to be bigger and bolder, with an enhanced format, a star-studded field, and a record prize pool of ₹1 crore.
For the first time in the tournament's history, both the Masters and Challengers sections will feature nine rounds of classical round-robin chess — a step up from the seven-round structure used in previous editions.
The stakes are higher than ever, not just in terms of prize money but also for what's on the line: crucial FIDE Circuit points that count toward qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament.
With some of the world's top Grandmasters — including Arjun Erigaisi, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, and Nihal Sarin — in the fray, the competition is expected to be intense from the very first round.
The event was initially slated to begin on Wednesday, August 6, but had to be postponed by a day following a minor fire incident at the Hyatt Regency, the official venue in Chennai. Thankfully, no one was harmed, and organisers quickly moved to reschedule. The tournament will now kick off on Thursday, August 7.
When will the third edition of Chennai Grand Masters take place?
The 2025 Chennai Grand Masters will be held from August 7 to 15. Games begin daily at 2 PM IST, with an earlier start on the final day.

'I'll drop you from the team...': How coach Gambhir and captain SKY helped Samson erase doubts after India comeback
Sanju Samson has opened up about his rollercoaster journey in international cricket and how Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav's trust after the 2024 T20 World Cup boosted his confidence. Samson has produced match-winning performances for India since making his return to the team. read more Sanju Samson's journey in international cricket has been full of ups and downs. He had been in and out of the team ever since his debut way back in 2015. His next match after his first T20I for India came five years later in 2020. Samson recently touched upon the tough phase of his career during an interview with former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin. Speaking on Ashwin's YouTube show Kutti Stories with Ash, Samson said it was hard for him to deal with the feelings of not getting regular chances to prove himself on the big stage. However, the Rajasthan Royals captain said he always tried to stay positive and not worry too much about things he couldn't control. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Being on and off the team was happening for a long time then honestly, it wasn't easy, Anna. It was not easy to have those kinds of feelings… I had already played some 8-9 years of international cricket, and I'd just played 15 games. I was there, and I was not there. I was there, and I was not there. And I always tried to keep myself in a positive frame of mind I kept assuring myself that it would happen, and different people have different journeys. Your journey is different. Respect that, and be mindful of that, and you will get there whenever you are meant to be,' Samson said. Samson reveals how Gambhir and SKY helped However, things changed after the 2024 T20 World Cup when a transition occurred in the Indian team following their historic triumph. Senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired, and head coach Rahul Dravid stepped down, citing the end of his contract. Gautam Gambhir came in as an all-format coach, and Suryakumar Yadav became the Indian T20 captain. Samson revealed that he was playing a Duleep Trophy match in Andhra Pradesh when SKY personally gave him a message. Samson said that the Indian captain assured him of a place in the upcoming games and told him he would be opening the batting. 'And suddenly, the change happened after the [T20] World Cup. Gautam bhai came in, and then Surya came in as the Captain. I was playing a Duleep Trophy game in Andhra. Surya was playing for another team on a different ground at the same time. That's where Surya told me, 'Chetta, there is a huge opportunity coming up for you. We have seven games lined up. And I am going to give you all seven games as an opener.' I was like, 'super da…' Seven games! Hearing it from the captain's mouth itself… that felt great,' Samson said. However, Samson didn't perform well in the first two games against Sri Lanka, where he got out for ducks. But he made a strong comeback in the subsequent matches and scored three centuries, including two against South Africa. Samson revealed the chat he had with Gambhir after getting those ducks. 'And then I played two games in Sri Lanka after that I was out for ducks in both the matches. The memories of being in and out of the team started flooding in, and I thought that was it. I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gauti bhai saw it. He came upto me, and asked what had happened. I told him that I didn't capitalise on the chance that I got and he was like… 'So? I'll drop you from the team only if you have scored 21 ducks.' He might have just told 21 as an arbitrary number but that confidence from the captain and the coach elevated my feel. It told me that they really trusted me, and they wanted me to do well and that really helped me to do what I did after that.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ever since Gambhir and SKY took charge of the Indian team, Samson has been getting regular opportunities. However, the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter is yet to fully live up to his potential. With India set to co-host the 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, Samson will hope to cement his place in the squad.

'That was my mistake': Rohit Sharma's childhood coach shares how he discovered the batter inside future India captain
Rohit Sharma (AFP Photo) NEW DELHI: India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma 's journey to becoming one of modern cricket's most destructive openers almost took a very different path. His childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has revealed that he first spotted Rohit not with a bat in hand, but as a promising off-spinner — and only discovered his batting talent by chance, much later. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking on a YouTube podcast with Gaurav Manglani, Lad recalled: 'I first saw him as a bowler, he was about 12 years old. I saw him playing a match against us. Then I told his uncle (Chacha) to get him admitted to my school. The school started in 1995, and I saw Rohit in 1999. He took admission that year. In the first year, he was in under 14. During practice, I kept making him bowl. Next year, Rohit went to 8th standard and was 14 years old. ' Poll What do you think was the key factor in Rohit Sharma's success as a cricketer? Natural talent Coaching and guidance Hard work and determination Opportunities to showcase skills The turning point came unexpectedly. 'One day, while entering the school, I saw a boy knocking (batting). From outside, I saw the bat was coming very straight and good. I didn't know it was Rohit at first. When I went inside, I asked him if he was batting. He said yes, sir. Then I gave him some batting in the nets at number six or seven. Before that, I had never given him batting practice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Certificate in Technology MIT-TLIP Apply Now Undo That was my mistake,' Lad admitted. Rohit soon proved his worth with the bat. 'He batted well. In a match, he went in at number seven and scored 40 runs — a very good 40. The way he was batting, I felt he had a very good talent for batting. A thought came to my mind: it would be good to make him open. He was very happy when I asked, and scored 140 runs as an opener. That's when I knew he should focus more on batting.' The rest, as they say, is history — with Rohit Sharma going on to become one of the finest opening batters of his era, famed for his elegance, timing, and unmatched pull shot.
