Paramount sued by writer over 'Top Gun: Maverick' screenplay

Reuters28-04-2025

April 28 (Reuters) - Paramount Global (PARA.O), opens new tab was sued by a screenwriter in New York federal court late Sunday seeking a share of profits for his work on Paramount's hit film "Top Gun: Maverick."
Shaun Gray said in the lawsuit, opens new tab that he was entitled to a copyright interest in the blockbuster Tom Cruise action movie for his contributions to its screenplay. The sequel to the 1986 hit "Top Gun" grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide following its theatrical release in 2022.
Spokespeople for Paramount and attorneys for Gray did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the complaint on Monday.
Gray is the cousin of "Maverick" screenwriter Eric Singer, according to the complaint. Gray's lawsuit said Singer and the film's director Joseph Kosinski approached him in 2017 about co-writing the screenplay.
Gray said he wrote several scenes that appeared in the movie, including multiple fighter jet flight scenes. According to the complaint, Gray was the film's only writer not subject to a work-made-for-hire agreement, which entitled him to a share of its copyright and profits.
Paramount fended off a separate copyright lawsuit last year over "Maverick" from the heirs of Ehud Yonay, whose article "Top Guns" inspired the original "Top Gun" movie.
The case is Gray v. Paramount Global, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 1:25-cv-03484.

Rama Duwaji, wife of the 33-year-old socialist poised to be NYC's next mayor

Zohran Mamdani, candidate for NYC mayor, at the marriage Bureau with his wife Rama Duwaji New York City may have its eyes on the mayoral Democratic primary after governor Andrew Cuomo was defeated by Zohran Mamdani overnight, but the unexpected star of the race is not on the ballot. Rama Duwaji stood beside her husband as the 33-year-old Muslim socialist led with 43 percent of the vote and 'made history', in his own words. It was only a few weeks ago that Mamdani hard-launched his wife, who he met on Hinge, sharing a carousel of their wedding pictures on Instagram. Until recently, the glamorous Syrian illustrator – who uses her art to support America's growing pro-Palestine movement – was largely absent from her husband's online mayoral campaign. That changed with a single post after right-wing trolls accused the politician of 'hiding his wife from NYC.' Sharing pictures from their civil ceremony, he wrote: 'If you take a look at Twitter today, or any day for that matter, you know how vicious politics can be. I usually brush it off, whether it's death threats or calls for me to be deported. But it's different when it's about those you love. 'Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk's office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race – which should be about you – about her.' He added: 'You can critique my views, but not my family.' The couple met on Hinge and married last year (Picture: Reuters) Mamdani ended the post with a heartfelt message, saying that Rama 'isn't just my wife, she's an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.' Who is Rama Duwaji? Rama is a 28-year-old illustrator and animator who lives in Brooklyn, but is originally from Damascus. Her artwork is primarily in black and white, with the focus often being on a political message relating to American politics. Most recently, one of her illustrations highlighted what has been described by human rights organisations as Israel's 'deliberate starvation' of Palestinians in Gaza. Rama Duwaji arrives at the Democratic primary party in Queens, New York (Picture: Shutterstock) Rama wrote: 'As I was making this, Israel has been bombing Gaza nonstop with consecutive airstrikes. Keep your eyes on Gaza and support Go Project Hope.' Other work in her portfolio has focused on the ICE detention of Palestinian activist, Mahmoud Khalil, and New York charities sending over $60 million every year to 'fund Israeli war crimes' – an issue that her husband has long been a vocal critic of. In previous interviews, Rama has said that her work 'isn't about feeding the algorithm or pleasing everyone,' adding: 'It's about building a quiet community – organically, honestly – and creating space for care, conversation, and political presence.' How did Rama and Zohran meet? Mamdani has been open about meeting his wife on Hinge. The pair went on a first day after liking each other's profiles and, since then, their romance blossomed. Zohran pictured with his grandmother The couple had an engagement party in Dubai, on the rooftop of Vida Creek Harbour, which boasts views of the Burj Khalifa. The Mamdani campaign said in a statement: 'Before their civil ceremony in New York City, Zohran and his wife celebrated their engagement in Dubai last year – where her family lives – with a small, joyful ceremony surrounded by their loved ones.' Following her husband's success last night, Rama shared four Polaroids of the two, writing in the caption: 'Posting a couldn't possibly be prouder.' What are Zohran Mamdani's policies? Mamdani stands out for his energetic campaigning style and eye-catching policy proposals that include freezing rent for many New Yorkers, providing free bus service, universal childcare and city-owned supermarkets. In one of the most expensive cities in the world – where a three-bedroom flat can easily cost $6,000 a month – his message seems to have struck a chord with many. His image as a fresh voice for people has rapidly been growing since he declared his candidacy for mayor last fall. Mamdani has also been one of the most vocal politicians against Israel's war in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. In 2023, he introduced a bill to end the tax-exempt status of charities in New York with ties to Israeli settlements that violate international human rights law. But the bill quickly went nowhere after lack of support from the Assembly. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Brad Pitt's F1 movie missed the point of what has made the sport so popular

For so long, while marketing F1: The Movie to existing motorsport fans, the emphasis has been on all the outstanding efforts that went into making the film as immersive as possible. From filming at real-life Formula 1 races to creating bespoke cameras to fit into race cars, filmmakers went the extra mile on this front. And, in the finished product, it shows. F1: The Movie is visually and aurally spectacular pretty much from start to finish but, sadly, the Hollywood take on the sport starring Brad Pitt is let down by some glaring problems elsewhere. Many movies about motor racing have been made over the years and, while there are some good examples, many of them have non-existent plots and under-developed characters. Despite all the effort that went into filming this one, from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, it struggles from the same issues, unfortunately. Pitt has shown bags of on-screen charisma in many roles over the decades but, as retired F1 racer Sonny Hayes, brought back to the grid by his old team-mate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) who now owns the struggling APXGP team to help improve their fortunes, he's just not particularly likeable. Not to mention his entire emotional backstory is forgotten the second he sets foot back in the F1 paddock. Very few characters feel fully developed, while the excellent decision to have APXGP technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon) be F1's first woman in that role, even if she is of course fictional, ends up being a massive missed opportunity. Her expertise is rather undermined when Hayes' suggestion of how to develop the car ends up being what makes it competitive. There is plenty of talent on screen with Hollywood royalty in Pitt and Bardem, the latter being a particular favourite of mine in other roles, while Condon, Damson Idris and Tobias Menzies are also great assets to have had on board. All of them are let down by the writing which doesn't allow for much personality to shine through. It is a missed opportunity, given how F1 has gone about building an army of new fans in recent years. The Drive to Survive show on Netflix is not the sole reason why the sport has become so popular, but it has had an undeniably massive impact. Why is it so popular? Over the years it has shown us more about the people under the racing helmets. It is the personalities involved in F1 that people have fallen in love with, rather than the actual on-track action itself. It made the likes of Daniel Ricciardo and Guenther Steiner into household names and that aspect should have been given more focus in this film. Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192. As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+. Long-time fans of Formula 1 will probably be frustrated by the end result, not helped by plenty of plot holes and entirely unrealistic scenarios which regular viewers of the sport will notice in an instant. But this is where the extra focus on the presentation helps – watching real-life race track zoom by to the deafening noise of an F1 engine and the Hans Zimmer-composed score really does help you to forget the weaknesses. But casual F1 viewers or those who've rarely or never seen the sport will probably love it. because they are not entering the cinema with the prior knowledge which makes some aspects of the film difficult to accept. And, seeing as the whole point of the movie is to help F1 to further increase its fanbase, that probably makes the end product a success.

Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez wedding guest list: Who's attending?

Bezos and Sanchez, who went public with their relationship in 2019 and got engaged in 2023, are set to tie the knot in Venice, Italy, the city previously confirmed. The wedding comes about six years after the Amazon founder began dating Sanchez following his split from ex-wife and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Bezos and Sanchez have been rather tight-lipped about their upcoming nuptials, and the exact date of their wedding has not been revealed. Reuters previously reported that the three-day wedding is likely to occur between June 26 and 28. But one thing, though, is for sure: The socialites' fete is likely to be star-studded as they both boast dozens of A-list friends. Possible attendees include husband and wife duo actor Orlando Bloom and singer Katy Perry; media personalities Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian, TV icon Oprah Winfrey and "CBS Mornings" co-anchor Gayle King; and actress Eva Longoria. Sanchez's ex and NFL legend Tony Gonzalez -- considered one of the greatest tight ends in history -- and his wife October "Tobie" Gonzalez, friends of "The Fly Who Flew To Space" author, are also expected to attend.
