Box Office: Lilo and Stitch delivers one of May's biggest Thursdays with USD 9.2M, crosses USD 450M worldwide
Disney's Lilo & Stitch continues to demonstrate strong legs at the US box office, proving itself as one of this year's biggest family entertainers. The live-action and CGI hybrid endeavor wrapped its first full week at the domestic box office with a strong USD 9.2 million Thursday haul, a mere 8 percent drop from Wednesday, holding firm at the No. 1 spot on the home charts. The USD 9.2 million Thursday figure makes it the fourth-biggest Thursday ever for a May release, behind only Top Gun: Maverick (USD 14.5M), The Avengers (USD 12.4M), and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (USD 12.3M). It's also the sixth-biggest Thursday ever recorded in May, joining the ranks of Marvel juggernauts Avengers: Endgame (USD 21.5M) and Infinity War (USD 15.5M). As for Memorial Day releases, the film now holds the No. 2 spot for all-time biggest Thursdays, trailing only Top Gun: Maverick and outpacing fellow Disney titles like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, which came out in 2023 and 2019, respectively. Its impressive hold and wide appeal have pushed its US total to USD 217 million, while globally, Lilo & Stitch has now crossed USD 450 million, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the biggest earner in the Lilo & Stitch franchise. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, Lilo & Stitch is a reimagining of Disney's beloved 2002 animated film. The 2025 version blends live action with visual effects and includes new story elements pulled from the film's sequels and television adaptations. The film stars newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, with Chris Sanders, the director of the original and the OG voice of Stitch, reprising his iconic role. The ensemble cast also includes Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, alongside returning original cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee in new roles. The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on May 17 and opened theatrically across the globe on May 23. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who have praised its heartfelt storytelling, vibrant visuals, and nostalgic yet fresh take on the cherished characters.

The Popular Tom Cruise Action Movie Set to Receive Long-Awaited Sequel
Tom Cruise is once again pushing the boundaries of cinema forward with his latest action extravaganza. Scaling to new heights and finding new ways to top themselves, the crew behind Mission: Impossible has once again captured lightening in a bottle with the eighth and final M:I film, Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning. As the shock waves continue to resonate around Cruise's latest venture, many are wondering what other adventures lie in store for the famed star of Top Gun, Jack Reacher and A Few Good Men. Surprisingly, that answer might actually be a continuation of a 1990 cult favorite film from Cruise's early years in the action genre. Released in the summer of 1990, Days of Thunder stars Cruise as a competitive NASCAR driver recovering from a serious racing accident. As he attempts to launch a comeback and compete against a conniving rival racer (Cary Elwes), Cruise's NASCAR star also contends with a newfound romance with a local neurosurgeon (played by Cruise's then-wife, Nicole Kidman). Penned by original Mission: Impossible writer Robert Towne and directed by Top Gun's Tony Scott, Days of Thunder earned largely mixed reviews at the time of its release, although many were quick to point out the strength of the movie's performances and pulse-pounding racing sequences. In the past few years, however, the film has gained more appreciative views from mainstream audiences. More recently, Cruise has confirmed that he's currently working on ideas for a potential sequel to Days of Thunder, alongside a planned third installment in the hit Top Gun series. 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' the 62-year-old Hollywood icon said. 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick." Tom Cruise really did get a US aircraft carrier for his latest 'Mission' movie
For fans of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible series, the Pentagon can answer the incredulous question at the climax of its latest trailer: 'You gave him an aircraft carrier?' Yes, the US Navy and Air Force Special Operations Command decided to accept the mission: help the American actor's secret agent Ethan Hunt save the world. Or, at least make a movie about it. For The Final Reckoning , showing at cinemas nationwide, Cruise and the crew spent three days in the Adriatic Sea filming aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier commissioned in 2009. It is the latest cinematic incarnation of Cruise's career-long affinity for the US military and its aircraft (as well as doing his own stunts). It is an example of the Pentagon's willingness to showcase its hardware and martial might through a classic piece of American soft power, the Hollywood blockbuster. The Pentagon has a long history as a supporting character, most famously the 1990 spy thriller The Hunt For Red October – the one where Scotsman Sean Connery plays a Soviet submarine captain. Before getting on board, the US Department of Defense reviews scripts for accuracy and depictions of the military. (The Pentagon declined, for instance, to support Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning 1986 Vietnam War drama Platoon .) The US military charges for equipment use, as well as transportation and lodging for personnel. For 2022's Top Gun: Maverick , for example, the Navy was paid as much as US$11,374 (RM48,125.05) an hour to use its F/A-18 Super Hornets – which Cruise could not control as he flew in the fighter jet's back seat. For The Final Reckoning , however, movie studio Paramount's reported blowout budget of US$400mil (RM1.69bil) got a break because the carrier and crew were already on scheduled training missions. 'Most, if not all, of the aircraft time was logged as official training requirements, and therefore not reimbursable,' the Pentagon said in a statement. The cast and crew – including Cruise, co-star Hannah Waddingham and director Christopher McQuarrie – were ferried to the carrier aboard Sikorsky Aircraft Corp MH-60S Seahawks, flown by the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 based in Norfolk, Virginia. While aboard from Feb 28 to March 3, 2023, Cruise hosted a Top Gun: Maverick viewing in the ship's hangar bay and visited sailors, who had been deployed for about six months at that time. 'Given that we were on deployment, operational and safety plans were in place so that if called upon, we were ready to execute our mission on a moment's notice,' spokesman Lieutenant Commander Matthew Stroup said in the statement. The crew filmed flight sequences, a scene in the navigation bridge and Hunt's departure aboard a CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, from the 352nd Special Operations Wing out of Souda Bay, Crete, which was on a joint training exercise with the carrier group. The film 'supplemented the already scheduled training and did not interfere with any requirements', said Air Force Special Operations Command spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Rebecca Heyse. The USS Hyman G. Rickover, a Virginia-class attack submarine, makes a cameo, shot off the coast of Massachusetts. The interiors, however, were pure Hollywood: stage sets and actors for sailors. They did, however, have the help of a Navy representative and a retired submarine commander as a technical adviser. 'Being able to namecheck an aircraft carrier that you've filmed on lends a dimension of accuracy to the film that elevates it,' Paramount said, referencing a scene in which Hunt specifically requests the Bush carrier. The Pentagon's support 'lends authenticity to the military involvement necessary to help Ethan Hunt accomplish his mission'. – Bloomberg

Box Office: Lilo & Stitch becomes Disney's top domestic grosser of 2025, outranks Captain America 4 with USD 10M Wednesday
Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch is holding better than expected at the US box office. In just six days, the film has surpassed Captain America: Brave New World to become Disney's highest-grossing domestic release of all time, hitting an impressive USD 207.8 million in the US. The Dean Fleischer Camp-directed family film posted a strong USD 10 million on its first Wednesday, down 34.2 percent from its Tuesday earnings on Discount Day, yet still one of the best weekday holds for a May release. That figure makes it the third-biggest Wednesday ever for a May release, behind only Top Gun: Maverick (USD 14.8M) and The Avengers (USD 13.6M). It also marks the fifth-biggest Wednesday in May history, trailing juggernauts like Endgame and Infinity War. In terms of Memorial Day weekend releases, Lilo & Stitch now ranks No. 2 on the all-time Wednesday chart, just behind Top Gun: Maverick but ahead of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. The USD 10M Wednesday haul helped push it past the USD 200.5M domestic total of Captain America: Brave New World, cementing its spot as Disney's 2025 frontrunner at the box office. Released theatrically in the States on May 23, Lilo & Stitch, for those who may not know, is a hybrid live-action CGI remake of the beloved 2002 animated film. It stars newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelakai and features original voice actor Chris Sanders returning as her alien pet dog Stitch. The supporting cast includes Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis. Original Lilo & Stitch cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee also make appearances in new roles. The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on May 17 and received a wide theatrical release on the aforementioned date. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film has become a runaway commercial hit. Globally, it has grossed USD 421.4 million, making it the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2025 to date. With substantial weekday numbers and growing audience momentum, Lilo & Stitch looks poised to continue climbing the charts, though how far it ultimately goes will depend on its staying power in the competitive early summer market. It's tracking for USD 1 billion-plus as of now.
