SIBU (July 17): A man in his 50s here lost RM88,233 of his hard-earned savings after falling victim to a bogus online investment scheme.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim lodged a report yesterday after realising he had been duped.
'The victim was added to a WhatsApp group named 'Group VIP' on April 11.
'In the group, a woman identified as 'Ruth Khoo' invited him to join a so-called lucrative stock investment opportunity,' he said in a statement today.
Lured by the convincing discussions within the group, the man proceeded to make six deposits amounting to RM88,233 into three different local bank accounts.
'After his first transfer, he was told he had already made a profit.
'However, he was then asked to make additional payment, supposedly for taxes to Bank Negara Malaysia and the government in order to withdraw his returns,' said Zulkipli.
The man never received any profit from the scheme.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Zulkipli reminded members of the public to be vigilant and verify the legitimacy of any investment offer before parting with their money.
'We urge the public to check with official platforms such as the Bank Negara Malaysia website, the Securities Commission, or use the Investment Checker app,' he said.

Debt dispute behind viral Puchong kidnapping, one arrested

SUBANG JAYA: Police have arrested a local man suspected of involvement in the abduction of another man during a roadside altercation along Persiaran Puchong Permai yesterday evening. The arrest followed a tip-off from a member of the public who witnessed a group of men forcing the victim into a lorry in Puchong at about 6.38pm, said Subang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat. "Initial investigations revealed that the 32-year-old suspect arrested and his three accomplices, who are still at large, were involved in the incident that has since gone viral. "The victim, however, was also found with the suspect at the time of the arrest," Wan Azlan said in a statement today. He said the motive of the alleged abduction is believed to be linked to a debt dispute. Wan Azlan said the suspect was arrested at 10pm in the SS19 area. He said checks on the suspect showed he had two past criminal records. "Based on the tattoos on the suspect, we have strong reasons to believe that he is also a member of a secret society gang. He has been remanded for four days from July 23 to assist investigations," he said. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping with intent to confine, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine. It is also being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, and under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966, which provides for a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction. Yesterday, it was reported that a video of the incident had been captured and was making its rounds on social media platforms. Wan Azlan said police were tracking down the suspects involved in the alleged abduction and the circumstances surrounding the incident. "We are still looking for the remaining suspects who were seen in the recording," he said. Anyone with information about the case or the suspects may contact the Subang Jaya police control centre at 03-78627100 or investigating officer Inspector Dinesh Ganasan at 011-33094457. Wan Azlan assured that all information provided and the identity of the informant would be kept confidential.

Factory Worker Loses RM210,000 To Fake Investment Scheme Advertised On Facebook

IPOH, July 23 (Bernama) -- A factory worker lost RM210,000 in life savings after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on Facebook. The victim, known only as Chan, 47, said he came across the social media advertisement on March 26 promoting a high-return investment opportunity, which prompted him to invest. He later contacted an individual named Linda via WhatsApp, who introduced herself as a remisier or investment intermediary. "The investment seemed legitimate as I was instructed to download the 'Citi CDT' App from the Apple Store. The app verified, and I started by investing RM10,000 on the same day," he said during a press conference at the Perak MCA Building today. Chan went on to make five more transfers between April 2 and April 28 via online banking, cash deposit machines and over-the-counter transactions to four different bank accounts. Chan added that he was later informed he would receive returns of nearly RM1.7 million, but only if he made an additional payment of RM190,472.40, supposedly to release the profits. "After checking with several friends, they told me I had been scammed. I then lodged a police report at the Sungai Senam police station," he said. Meanwhile, Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Yuen Chan How urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. 'In the past, syndicates would use suspicious links to download fake apps. Now, they're developing legitimate-looking apps that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.
