Ten-feet-long python found in school kitchen, rescued
Teacher Akhilesh Bhardwaj of the middle section of the Baag Higher Secondary School told TOI that Lalita Bai and Sona Bai were preparing mid-day meals in the kitchen.
At around 10 am, when Lalita went to a corner to fetch something, she saw the python and screamed loudly.
She told Sona that there was a big snake, and both of them ran out of the kitchen. At that time, students of the middle school were studying, and when they heard Lalita's scream, they, as well as other staff members, rushed towards the kitchen. Somebody among them called voluntary snake rescuer Vinod Pawar, who resides in the nearby locality. Pawar reached there and rescued the python safely. He later released it in a deep forest.
Pawar told TOI that the python was about ten-feet-long and weighed around 11kg. He said that he inspected the whole building and the kitchen, and advised the school staff to close the gap below the kitchen door.

T Nagar flyover delayed again; deadline now Sept
Chennai: Despite earlier promises, the 1.2-km-long T Nagar flyover project missed yet another deadline, pushing completion to Sept. The latest holdup is that Greater Chennai Corporation says it is unable to procure "interblocks" pre-cast concrete units used to link sections of bridges and ensure uniform surface continuity to connect the old Usman Road bridge with the newly built CIT Nagar structure. Originally slated for completion in Dec 2024, the 131-crore project was later promised for May 2025 by municipal administration minister K N Nehru in the state budget. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar now, however, says it will be ready by Aug, while the contractor claims a more realistic timeline is the end of September. On Wednesday, the corporation released drone images of the flyover, claiming that only blacktopping, streetlight installation, and median work remain. But a ground visit by TOI showed otherwise. Key structural work particularly connecting the old and new flyovers near Ranganathan Street was not yet carried out. Downramps at that end are also missing. A contractor at the site cited a shortage of interblocks as the reason for the delay. With no exit via Usman Road, ambulances and residents are forced to use the Duraisamy subway. "The subway is congested even during normal hours. With additional diverted traffic, it's become worse," a resident of Rameshwaram Street said. "We're pushing the contractor to speed up," said Sudhakar, superintending engineer of GCC's bridges department. "We aim to complete it by Aug, subject to material availability." A local, S Manikandan, said, "With all the technical advancements, it's baffling how GCC has taken nearly 10 months to raise just nine pillars." The flyover, which spans major junctions South Usman Road-Burkit Road and Madley Road, South Usman Road-South West Boag Road and New Boag Road, and the CIT Nagar North Road T-junction is designed as a two-lane structure with a width of 8.4m. It includes a 140-metre up-ramp at CIT Nagar Main Road, a 120-metre up-ramp at Usman Road, and a 100-metre down-ramp. Once completed, it aims to allow motorists from Anna Salai to bypass Panagal Park junction within minutes. N Guwahati water supply project 90% ready, says Jal Board
1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: Work of water supply project in North Guwahati is 90% done and the project is likely to be complete by Aug, Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) officials said. The project supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is gradually progressing, with GJB at the helm. The ambitious project, once completed, will have a capacity of supplying 37 million litres of potable water per day. It will cover 15,000 households, under five commissioned district metering areas (DMA). However, while GJB officials claim that the govt project picked up pace after 2022 with the laying of pipelines along the steep slopes, images shared by them revealed that the slopes, which were roughly 21 feet high, were extremely prone to erosion, particularly during heavy rain. Without proper safeguard, officials think that there could be serious repercussions. Rainwater could wash away the soil, triggering landslides that might damage the pipeline or even threaten the reservoir itself. "We had sought the expertise of IIT-Guwahati, and based on their recommendations, we have constructed gabion retaining walls (stone filled cages) to firmly secure the slopes and protect the reservoir. Most of the slope stabilisation work has been completed, with only a few stretches remaining," said Nipendra Mohan Das, GJP chief engineer. Housing and urban affairs minister, Jayanta Mallabaruah recently inspected the progress of the project. While speaking to the media, the minister highlighted that work is progressing according to IIT's recommendations, and once work is completed according to their advice, only then the water distribution phase will begin. However, he also added that a major portion of the area is already being given water by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. Providing an update on the five DMAs, Das said, while most of the pipeline work has been completed, some sections are being relaid due to changes in the road alignment caused by the construction of the upcoming Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge.
