Kuching court sentences father to 12 years, orders four strokes of the cane for trafficking 10-year-old daughter to friend
KUCHING, May 30 — The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 48-year-old man to 12 years in prison and four strokes of the cane for allowing his 10-year-old daughter to be sexually abused by his friend in exchange for RM160.
Judge Iris Awen Jon handed down the sentence after finding the accused guilty at the end of the defence case.
He was charged under Section 31(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001, punishable under Section 31 of the same Act, read together with Section 16 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
In addition to the jail term and caning, the court also ordered the accused to undergo rehabilitation counselling and to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing his sentence.
He committed the offence at a house in Matang in 2021.
Based on the facts of the case, the victim was sent by her father to his friend's house in Matang and left her there.
The accused's friend raped her inside the bathroom before the father returned to pick her up. The victim also saw her father receiving RM160 in cash from the friend.
At school in 2022, the victim told a teacher about the unfortunate incident before a police report was lodged.
The accused was subsequently arrested, and investigations revealed that he had sent his daughter to his friend's house for sex trafficking.
The trial saw eight prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutors Ruvinasini Pandian and Aiman Mutallib Mohammad Shariff, while the accused was represented by a council. — The Borneo Post

Search continues for couple in Tanjung Harapan boat tragedy
Three people drowned after the boat capsized some 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan, Klang, on Friday afternoon. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The search and rescue operation for a couple whose boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Klang, is still going on, with efforts now focused on refloating the overturned vessel. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcement and excise unit operations officer Syafiq Sazali said part of the boat was successfully refloated at 2.20pm, and they had started to pump out the water, reported Berita Harian. It was reported that three people, including a three-year-old child, had drowned in the incident yesterday afternoon, with a married couple missing. Syafiq said the operation to raise the overturned boat was complex as it required divers to attach ropes underneath the boat They also had to take into account the sea current and underwater visibility. 'The rising tide helped somewhat because the boat still had some buoyancy, which made it easier to attach the ropes. During low tide, the boat would be more stuck to the seabed,' he said at a press conference. He said the team successfully lifted the rear of the boat using a crane and was waiting for divers to secure ropes underneath the bow before connecting it to the crane to lift the front section. Once the entire boat is refloated, water will be pumped out of it and the interior will be inspected to ensure there are no victims trapped inside. 'Surface search efforts are also ongoing with the help of more than four assets from involved agencies and several boats from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club,' he said. Selangor maritime department director Muhaimin Salleh said the boat was carrying six people, with only one survivor confirmed so far. The initial investigation suggested the boat lost control before capsizing about 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan. The missing couple has been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Those who died were the couple's son, Darren, and two others identified as Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29. All three were found inside the boat. The sole survivor has been identified as Chang Yan Qin, 17. Muhaimin said the missing couple was believed to be test-driving the boat after recent repairs.

‘Water rushed in within seconds': Survivor describes deadly Tanjung Harapan boat accident
KLANG, June 7 — 'The incident happened very fast; the boat we were on capsized and filled with water before sinking,' recounted Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, who survived the overturned boat incident that claimed three lives in the waters of Tanjung Harapan yesterday. Chang is one of six individuals aboard the boat who survived, while two other victims are still missing. According to Chang, the tragedy occurred when the boat they were in, which was undergoing a test run, made an U-turn about 30 minutes after departing from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). 'The incident happened very quickly when the relatively fast-moving boat suddenly overturned, and in less than 10 seconds, water had entered all compartments of the boat. 'The situation inside the boat became chaotic, but I saved myself by trying to swim out before managing to sit on top of the overturned boat,' he said when met by reporters at the search and rescue location, Selangor Maritime Headquarters, in Tanjung Harapan today. Chang said he could only scream for help after realising other passengers were not visible and after about five minutes of holding on to the boat, another boat approached and rescued him. He said the fishermen in the boat then helped contact the authorities for assistance. 'I understand that this was the second test run for the boat, and before this, the boat was found to be in overall good condition,' he said, expressing sadness over the heartbreaking tragedy. In the incident around 5pm, three individuals, including a child, died, while a married couple is still missing. The victims are three-year-old Darren Gan, Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while the missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama
