Teoh Beng Hock's family rejects MACC apology, says no justice without action on five officers

By: Malay Mail Text Size: Teoh Lee Lan, 45, sister of the late Teoh Beng Hock, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable. — Picture by Sayuti Zainudin Kuala Lumpur: The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has reportedly rejected an apology from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over Beng Hock's death 16 years ago. According to The Star, Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable for her brother's death.
Advertisement 'They said they are apologising because they see our pain, but they are not surrendering the five officers we believe were involved,' she was quoted as saying at a press conference here last night. 'Their offer of a financial contribution is also shameful — we do not want money, we want the truth,' she reportedly added. According to the report, Lee Lan further criticised Azam's remarks, saying they implied that a human life could be compensated with money. Yesterday, Azam apologised to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, who died in 2009 at the building housing the commission's Selangor office. He said the MACC acknowledged the findings of past investigations, including a recent police probe that resulted in no further action, and expressed sympathy for the family's long-standing pain. Kota Kinabalu: The Barisan Nasional (BN)-Pakatan Harapan (PH) cooperation in Sabah is not a desperate response to any political crisis, but a strategic move to ensure long-term stability for the State, says Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir. 'Politics is not about who pats each other on the back today, but about who truly has the capacity to lead Sabah forward,' said Suhaimi, who is also Sabah Umno information Chief. He was responding to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's announcement on Sunday that GRS would be working with PH to face the coming 17th state election (PRN17). Suhaimi said the collaboration is not a 'political lifeline' for any party but the result of careful discussions aimed at building a stable and inclusive government. 'BN Sabah is not a mere complement to any political coalition. We are not a second option. We are a team that is ready to lead this state, equipped with proven experience, solid organisational structure and real capacity,' he said in a statement. He added that the ongoing political negotiations between BN Sabah and PH were part of their election preparations and were not motivated by personal or partisan interests. Woman, 32, falls to her death from Sandakan mall

SANDAKAN: A 32-year-old foreign housewife died after allegedly jumping from the seventh floor of a shopping mall, here, Monday. Sandakan District Police Chief ACP George Abd Rakman said the incident happened about 12.25pm, with mall management alerting authorities two minutes after discovering the victim. 'The victim was found unconscious and lying face-down on the fourth-floor balcony,' George said in a statement. Preliminary checks revealed severe head and leg injuries. George said initial investigations suggest the woman was under stress due to domestic issues. Firefighters were called to assist in retrieving the body from a hard-to-reach area. The victim was sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for post-mortem. Police are treating the case as a sudden death and have urged the public to refrain from speculation. Sabah parties must help realise Labuan's vision

LABUAN: Political parties from Sabah operating here must work together to achieve the shared goal of realising the vision for Labuan that was hoped for when the island was handed over to become a Federal Territory in 1984. Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the current situation in Labuan is far from the original expectations. 'In fact, Labuan, once a duty-free island, no longer enjoys the same duty-free status as it once did. 'This concern is based on fact. Even former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh, who was the architect behind Labuan's handover as a Federal Territory, has acknowledged that his original objective for Labuan has failed,' he said Dr Jeffrey when launching the Star Labuan Division. Jeffrey emphasised that since 1984, the hope was for Labuan to be developed economically, creating ample job opportunities and increasing income levels for its people. 'Back then in 1984, the entire Borneo region hoped Labuan would become a catalyst for development in Sabah and Sarawak,' he added. Jeffrey, who is also Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I, noted that the changes in Labuan have strayed far from the original 1984 aspirations. Instead, the culture and traditions of some Labuan residents — who were once part of Sabah — have been 'Malay-ised.' 'Today, some Labuan residents feel sidelined in the Federal Territory's administration. They want to be involved in policy-making and implementation,' he said. According to Jeffrey, the concerns being raised are not out of anger or resentment but simply calls for positive changes that would make Labuan a source of pride for all. He added that this is precisely why Star established its division in Labuan. Through cooperation with fellow component parties under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, the aim is for Labuan's politics to one day be led and managed by Sabah-based parties. 'This issue has also been raised in Parliament. I myself have repeatedly called for the restoration of Labuan's duty-free status, but unfortunately, our pleas have yet to be heard,' he said. Some 500 people attended the event.
