Sabah youths urged to choose TVET as primary option, not an alternative
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has called on the youth in the state to open their minds and view Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary pathway to building a bright future, rather than merely an alternative route.
He said TVET now plays a significant role in the state's economic and social development, in line with technological transformation and current industrial needs.
'TVET not only equips individuals with practical skills, but it is also synonymous with empowerment, employment opportunities, and economic growth,' he said in his speech for the Launch Ceremony of the Sabah TVET Council (MTS) here today.
The text of his speech was read out by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.
Hajiji said the TVET courses currently offered have been tailored to the needs of the job market and the rapidly developing industrial sector, making it a stable and viable career path for young people.
'I urge the youth of this state not to hesitate in joining the TVET field. Now is the time to shift perceptions and see TVET as a smart choice that opens doors to becoming professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators,' he said.
According to him, the Sabah TVET Council launched today is the Sabah government's commitment to strengthening the technical training ecosystem, coordinating over 160 TVET institutions across the state, and ensuring that every graduate produced is truly ready to face the challenges of the working world.
He said TVET is also seen as a key driver for the state's development goals through the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 Development Blueprint and strategic national documents such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030), the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030), and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Hajiji also touched on the current wave of technological revolution, including artificial intelligence (AI), which requires the younger generation to be equipped with new, adaptive, and innovation-oriented skills.
'The job landscape is changing. If Sabah's youth are not prepared with relevant skills, we will be left behind. TVET is the best platform for us to develop a highly skilled workforce that will drive the state's progress,' he stressed.

Hajiji KOTA KINABALU (June 6): Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has called on all Sabahans to continue strengthening the spirit of brotherhood and unity across the state, especially as Muslims prepare to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha. In his Aidiladha 1446H message on Friday, he also urged the Muslim community to deepen their faith and piety, and to reflect on the profound story of sacrifice involving Prophet Ibrahim AS and his son, Prophet Ismail AS. 'The narrative of Aidiladha, which revolves around the act of sacrifice, highlights the lives of two great Islamic figures, Prophet Ibrahim AS and his son Prophet Ismail AS, and carries a deep meaning and philosophy focused on three key aspects of human life: struggle, sacrifice and devotion to Allah SWT,' he said. Hajiji said the celebration, which coincides with the month of Hajj, is a sacred time that encapsulates both Habluminallah (relationship with God) and Habluminannas (relationship among people). 'This holy occasion should inspire us to reflect on our connection with the Almighty as well as our responsibilities towards one another as fellow human beings,' he said. He expressed hope that the observance of Aidiladha this year would further strengthen unity and harmony among Malaysians in Sabah, regardless of background or belief.

Mara TVET graduate earns up to RM20,000 monthly as aircraft mechanic
KUALA LUMPUR: A graduate of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) is now earning up to RM20,000 a month after securing a job as an aircraft mechanic with an international airline. The success story of Ibrahim, a graduate from Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Kuala Lumpur, was shared by Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who met him during a flight from Doha to Kuala Lumpur. Asyraf Wajdi said Ibrahim approached him and introduced himself as a "child of Mara", havingcompleted a Certificate in Fabrication Technology at IKM. He is now working as an aircraft body mechanic at Qatar Airways in Doha, earning between RM17,000 and RM20,000 a month. "Ibrahim's story proves that TVET graduates can succeed and become skilled professionals on an international level. "This remarkable young man from Merlimau, Melaka, said all his batchmates from IKM Kuala Lumpur have found similar jobs with comparable salaries. He is incredibly proud to be a product of Mara. "Who says TVET graduates can't be successful? The skills and vocational programmes offered by Mara — be it through GiatMara, IKM, Mara advanced skills colleges, the Malaysia-Japan Industrial Institute, or even at higher education institutions like Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) — have proven their ability to produce highly skilled talent not just for the country but for the global stage. "Ibrahim is a shining example of how a professional TVET certificate alone can lead to a high-paying, internationally recognised job. "Only knowledge can transform lives. Mara is going global," he said in a Facebook post today. Previously, Deputy Prime Minister and National TVET Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that the employability rate of TVET graduates is high, with Mara institutions recording a 98.7 per cent rate, surpassing the national average of 94.5 per cent. In February, Asyraf Wajdi also stated that Mara had undertaken a rationalisation of all its TVET programmes, focusing on high-tech and strategic fields that align with industry needs. This rationalisation covers 270 TVET-stream institutions under the Mara education institution network, out of a total of 344 across the country.
