French star Marchand breaks 200m medley world record

Swimming star Leon Marchand didn't fight for gold on Wednesday, but stole the show as he broke the 200 metre medley world record with his performance in the men's semi-finals at the World Aquatics championships.
The French swimmer clocked 1 minute 52.69 seconds, smashing the previous mark of 1:54.00 minutes set by American Ryan Lochte in 2011.
'I can't believe it right now. I knew I would get close because I felt really good today, the preparation was good,' he said.
Marchand, who won four individual gold medals at his home Games last summer, is only competing in the medley events in Singapore.
'Probably the right decision, so happy to be here,' he said.
In Marchand's absence, American Luca Urlando claimed his maiden world title in the men's 200m butterfly in 1:51.87 minutes.
'It was a great race, tough race. (After many injuries) I believed that I could get back to a moment like this,' he said.
Krzysztof Chmielewski of Poland got silver as he did in 2023, .77 of a second off the pace. Harrison Turner of Australia took bronze.
Jaouadi beats Germans for gold Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi made his move shortly after the halfway mark to run away with gold in the men's 800 metre freestyle.
Jaouadi clocked 7 minutes 38.88 seconds to claim his first long course world title with the third fastest time ever in the distance.
'It means a lot. I tried to control the race and see what happened,' he said.
Germany took the other two positions on the podium with Sven Schwarz in second and Lukas Maertens in third. Maertens already had gold from the 400m freestyle.
Olympic and defending champion Daniel Wiffen of Ireland finished last.
O'Callaghan remains on top In the women's 200m freestyle, Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan confirmed her top billing.
The Olympic champion clocked 1:53.48 minutes to beat Li Bingjie of China for gold. American Claire Weinstein completed the podium.
Earlier this year, O'Callaghan had spoken about having tough months in her return to full-time training following a five-month break to recharge mentally after the Paris Olympics last summer.
'I'm very grateful to have a good support team behind me,' she said.
In Paris, she won three gold and five total medals, including the first individual Olympic title of her career in the women's 200 freestyle.
First gold for Italy Simone Cerasuolo claimed a first gold medal for Italy in the pool, in the men's 50m breaststroke in 26.54 seconds. Neutral athlete Kirill Prigoda took silver eight-hundredths back, and China's Qin Haiyang earned bronze.
Several major swimmers were missing in this event, including world record holder Adam Peaty, three-time World Championship medallist Nic Fink, and Doha 2024 champion Sam Williamson.
There was an upset in the men's 100m freestyle semi-finals as Olympic champion Pan Zhanle of China missed a spot in the final.
Neutral athletes win mixed 4x100m medley relay Prigoda later helped the neutral athletes team winning gold in the mixed 4x100m medley relay alongside Daria Klepikova, Daria Trofimova and Miron Lifintsev.
World record holders and Olympic champions United States were not competing for the title after being eliminated in the heats and failing to reach the final.
China claimed silver, while Canada took bronze.

Tie-break marathon: Fritz edges Lehecka without a single break
ATP Toronto The National Bank Open saved the best for last on a bumper Sunday that saw all four men's singles matches go into a deciding set. In the Toronto nightcap, Taylor Fritz edged Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-6(5) in a dramatic match in which neither player lost a service game. Across nearly three hours, Fritz saved all nine break points against him while Lehecka saved five. Fritz escaped 0/40 at 5-6 in the opening set before Lehecka dug out of the same hole at 0-1 in the third set. 'I think just in the end [it was about] really accepting what was there for me tonight,' said the American, who won 82 per cent of his first-serve points. 'Luckily for me, I was serving really, really well tonight. He was too. 'When it came down to that tie-break, I really bailed myself out with a lot of first serves, and then just trying to put balls in the court and not try any shots that, despite how badly I wanted to try to be aggressive, just be disciplined and just make the balls that I felt like I could make.' The victory completed the box set of ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals for Fritz, who is through to that stage in Canada for the first time. He is the 11th active player to reach the quarters at all nine Masters 1000s. 'It's really cool,' said Fritz. 'It shows the consistency on all the different tournaments and surfaces. I guess what's next is to go for semis.' Fritz has reached the semis in six of the nine Masters 1000s, all but Rome, Cincinnati and Paris.

Teenager Mboko stuns Gauff at Montreal
PA Media/DPA London Coco Gauff was sent crashing out of the National Bank Open in Montreal in straight sets by Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. The 18-year-old, ranked 85 in the world, needed just 62 minutes to beat the top seed 6-1, 6-4 and book a place in the quarter-finals. 'It's incredible,' she said on court after her victory. 'I'm so happy to beat such a great champion.' Mboko made her WTA Tour debut in March and took Gauff to three sets in Rome in her second event. She raced through the first set in 25 minutes, breaking the American three times. The second set was a tighter affair which went on serve for the first 11 games. Gauff failed to convert three break points throughout the set, Mboko seizing on her sole opportunity to close out the victory. World number two Gauff said: 'I think she's going to have a lot of success on tour. I'm sure we're going to have many more battles in the future.' She will face Lin Zhu of China or Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last eight. Osaka posts second-quickest win of career Naomi Osaka delivered one of the most imperious performances of her career to reach the quarter-finals, racing past Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes. That's the second-quickest completed tour-level win of her career, following her 42-minute 6-1, 6-1 rout of Ana Sofia Sánchez in the first round of Florianopolis 2016. McIntosh and Marchand clinch medley doubles; Tunisian Jaouadi claims distance double
DPA Singapore Canada's Summer McIntosh stormed to her fourth gold from five individual events at the World Aquatics Championships on Sunday in the 400 metres medley, and French star Leon Marchand was almost as dominant in the men's race. Marchand also got a silver on the final day of competition as part of the French team in the 4x100m medley relay which was won by the neutral athletes from Russia. McIntosh was not so lucky as Canada placed fifth in the women's relay where the US team of Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Terri Huske clocked a world record 3 minutes 49.34 seconds. While McIntosh and Marchand won both medley events, Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi followed up on his 800m gold with victory in the 1,500m freestyle where German Florian Wellbrock failed to get a fifth Singapore gold after a sweep of all four open water events. McIntosh clocked a championship record 4:25.78 seconds for an eighth career world title in the 400m medley, finishing a massive 7.48 seconds ahead of Australian Jenna Forrester and Mio Narita of Japan, who shared silver. Triple Olympic champion McIntosh had earlier in Singapore won the 200m medley, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle. Her bid for a golden sweep of five individual golds did not happen when she had to settle for bronze in the 800m freestyle. In the men's race, Marchand was in a league of his own en route to victory in 4:04.73 minutes, 3.59 seconds ahead of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita. Ilia Borodin, a neutral athlete from Russia, earned bronze. Marchand only competed in the 200m and 400m medley in Singapore, and not in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke which he had also won at the home Olympics last year in Paris for four golds. He now has seven world titles. In the 1,500m, Jaouadi pulled away from Sven Schwarz of Germany in the final 100 metres for an identical one-two finish as in the 800m. Jaouadi clocked 14:34.41 minutes, with Schwarz 1.28 seconds back. American Bobby Finke, the twice Olympic champion and world record holder, earned bronze 2.19 seconds behind the winner. 'I know that everyone was feeling the pain and maybe I was the strongest mentally,' Jaouadi said. Wellbrock had led the heats but failed to get a second gold over the distance, two weeks after claiming an unprecedented sweep of the four open water golds. He finished almost 10 seconds off the pace in fifth. Elsewhere, Kliment Kolesnikov lived up to his top billing with 50m backstroke gold in 23.68 seconds ahead of fellow Russian Pawel Samusenko and South African Pieter Coetze, who shared silver .49 of a second back. 'It was a tough years since my first world championships. I didn't think I would be so fast,' said Kolesnikov, who missed his world record by a mere 13-hundredths. Kolesnikov got his first gold after a silver and two bronze in 2019, having not been eligible at the last three worlds due to sanctions against Russia which can now send athletes again. Coetze got his third Singapore medal, to go with 100m gold and 200m silver. Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte got a fourth straight women's 50m breastroke gold in 29.55 seconds for a total tally of six world titles, while American great Lilly King missed the podium in fifth place in her last career race. 'This is what I wanted to do my whole life. I am very grateful,' the triple Olympic and 11-time world champion King said. There was also no podium for team-mate Walsh in the 50m freestyle as the 100m butterfly champion came home fourth, with gold going to Australia'a Meg Harris in 24.02. But Walsh then returned later for relay gold ahead of Australia.
