Himachal: 2 NH among 297 roads closed, orange alert for very heavy rains

Shimla, Aug 3 (PTI) Moderate to heavy rains continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the closure of 297 roads, including one national highway on Sunday, officials said.
The local meteorological office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur on Monday and Una, Bilaspur, Kangra and Sirmaur on Tuesday.
A person died and two others sustained injuries when their vehicle fell into a gorge following a landslide near Dargi on Sunni area of Shimla district on Sunday.
The ill-fated vehicle with three people on board was on its way to to Chanog. The deceased was identified as Lekhraj (37). Vikas and Nitish are under treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital, Shimla, officials said.
On Saturday evening, Dinesh Kumar (54) was killed when a bulldozer he was operating plunged into a deep gorge in Kumarsain, around 77 kilometres away from Shimla.
So far, there have been 103 reported deaths due to rain-related incidents, with 36 people still missing. The fatalities include 20 drownings, 19 deaths from falls, 17 deaths from cloudbursts, eight from flash floods, and six from landslides, officials said.
Since Saturday evening, several regions have experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, with Bharari recording 108.2 mm, follow ed by Murari Devi with 82 mm, Naina Devi at 74.4 mm, Malraon at 56.2 mm, Brahmani at 45.4 mm, Una at 38 mm, and Jot at 36.2 mm.
A total of 297 roads, including NH-505 (Khab to Gramphoo) have been closed for vehicular traffic as of Sunday evening. The majority of these, 164 roads, are in the heavily affected Mandi district, while 67 are in Kullu district, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
Additionally, 134 power distribution transformers and 266 water supply schemes have been affected across the state, the SEOC said. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20 until August 3, the state has incurred losses totalling Rs 1,714 crore.
As many as 1,649 houses have been fully or partially damaged in the state, with 53 flash floods, 28 cloudbursts and 47 major landslides recorded this season, officials said. PTI BPL SKY SKY

Moderate to heavy showers to continue in northeastern districts of Rajasthan
Agency: Jaipur, Aug 4 (PTI) Rainfall activity is expected to continue in parts of Rajasthan this week, with moderate to heavy showers likely in some northeastern districts over the next two to three days, a MeT department spokesperson said on Monday. While northeastern Rajasthan may receive moderate to isolated heavy rainfall, most parts of western Rajasthan are likely to remain mostly dry, with only light rain expected at a few locations over the next four to five days. The highest rainfall was reported in Bayana (Bharatpur) at 51.0 mm, the Met office said. The maximum temperature during this period was recorded in Bikaner at 37.8 degrees Celsius. Heavy rain likely in northern West Bengal till Aug 10
Agency: PTI Kolkata, Aug 4 (PTI) Heavy rain is likely in the sub-Himalayan districts of West Bengal till August 10 owing to active monsoon flow, the IMD said. Some southern West Bengal districts are also likely to get heavy rain till August 7, it said. Owing to the active monsoon flow and strong moisture incursion, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over the northern districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochbehar till August 10. Trains cancelled, events called off as major storm hits Scotland
London, Aug 4 (AP) Authorities in Scotland cancelled trains, closed parks and warned people to tie down backyard trampolines as a rare summer storm brought potentially destructive winds to northern Britain. The UK's Meteorological Office issued an 'amber" wind warning in Scotland for Storm Floris, meaning there is a potential risk to lives and property, especially from large waves in coastal areas. The agency said wind gusts could reach 137 kmph, accompanied by heavy rain. The storm is hitting at the busiest time of year for tourism, with hundreds of thousands of people flocking to the Edinburgh Fringe and other arts festivals. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, one of the city's biggest tourist draws, said it was cancelling Monday's scheduled outdoor performance by massed ranks of bagpipers and drummers at Edinburgh Castle. Train companies cancelled services across much of Scotland, and some ferry crossings were also scrapped.
