Romania's newly elected president,
Nicușor Dan
, is not just a considered reform-minded leader and civic activist, he is also a former International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) gold medallist, who once brought his country global acclaim in numbers long before politics.
Dan, 55, who won the runoff election on Sunday with 54% of the vote, was part of the Romanian team that secured perfect scores in back-to-back IMO competitions in 1987 and 1988, each time achieving 42 out of 42 points and ranking first globally.
Born in Brașov County, Transylvania, Dan's early brilliance in mathematics was evident when he competed in the IMO as a teenager and swept all problems with full marks. His flawless performance earned him international praise and a gold medal.
He later pursued mathematics at the University of Bucharest and completed his PhD in France before returning home to engage in civic activism.
On Sunday evening, thousands gathered in Bucharest as the final results were announced, chanting 'Nicușor!' and waving Romanian and EU flags. In his victory speech, Dan called the outcome 'a moment of hope.' 'In today's elections, a community of Romanians who want a profound change in Romania won,' he told supporters in a city park.

Dan defeated nationalist George Simion, who led in the May 4 first round but lost momentum amid concerns over his isolationist and far-right rhetoric. According to final data, Dan picked up nearly 900,000 more votes than Simion in the second round, with 64% of eligible voters turning out, a significant rise from the previous round.
Romania's pro-West candidate Nicușor Dan wins presidential election in dramatic comeback
As per AP, the result marked a political shift for Romania, affirming a pro-European and reform-oriented direction.
Dan's background in mathematics has often defined his leadership style, reserved, data-driven, and methodical.
Known for modernising Bucharest's heating systems and sports facilities during his term as mayor, he also led the capital out of bankruptcy. Though criticised for poor communication, political analyst Sorin Cucerai revealed that, 'He is more the managerial, administrative type but he is a very decent, honest guy.'
His pro-Western stance was central to his campaign. He pledged support for Ukraine and fiscal reform, rejecting Simion's vision of a Romania pulled away from the European Union. After his win,
European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen posted on X, 'They have chosen the promise of an open, prosperous Romania in a strong Europe.'
Dan's first major task as president will be to nominate a new prime minister, following the resignation of Marcel Ciolacu. Despite a politically divided electorate, Dan struck a note of unity on Sunday night: 'Our full respect for those who had a different choice today,' he said, according to AP. 'We have a Romania to build together.'

Justice Kant: Indian judiciary shaped democracy's moral spine

NEW DELHI: Indian judiciary has been instrumental in shaping the democracy's moral spine by interpreting the Constitution's textual commands in a way that gave vibrancy and dynamism to the country's governance structure, said Justice Surya Kant, who will become the 53rd Chief Justice of India in Nov. Speaking to legal scholars and students in Seattle (US), he said in Kesavananda Bharti case, SC established the 'basic structure doctrine', which elucidated that while Parliament could amend the Constitution, it could not alter its fundamental identity. Justice Kant said, "When courts act to empower the powerless, grounded in constitutional text and moral clarity, they do not usurp democracy - they deepen it." While judiciary's proactive stance has often filled legislative or executive voids in advancing rights and justice, it has also, at times, drawn criticism for encroaching upon policy domains traditionally reserved for elected branches of govt, he said. "This tension invites a deeper inquiry into the legitimacy and limits of judicial intervention in a constitutional democracy," he added. He said principles such as the Rule of Law, Separation of Powers and Judicial Review were deemed unamendable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo This doctrine, unprecedented at the time, was rooted not in textual literalism, but in an ethical reading of democratic continuity, he said. He juxtaposed the Bharti judgment with the infamous ADM Jabalpur case, in which during emergency SC had acquiesced to the govt's draconian diktat "no right available to citizens", and said it was only following the Maneka Gandhi case, immediately after the end of Emergency, that the true expansion of rights happened through SC's interpretative exercises. "In this period, SC has reaffirmed the supremacy of the Constitution and underscored that its foundational values, especially those relating to life and liberty, are inviolable and beyond compromise," Justice Kant said. Explaining judicial independence, he said it encompasses the ability to have intellectual and moral independence, that stretches beyond mere institutional autonomy. "The underlying purpose of the independence of the judiciary is that judges must be able to decide a dispute before them according to law, uninfluenced by any other factor," he said, addingit is ingrained in the system ," he said.

CM condemns remarks on capital region women, calls it an ‘unforgivable offence'

1 2 Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition, the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday strongly condemned the "disgraceful remarks" made by a television commentator targeting women in the capital region and calling Amaravati a "capital of prostitutes". "There can be no tolerance to the appalling comments that demean the women of the capital region by likening them to prostitutes — an outright insult to their dignity. I strongly condemn this perverse trend being perpetuated under the cover of politics," the CM fumed. He said the state govt will not tolerate such people and warned them to be ready to face the consequences. In a strongly worded statement, Naidu expressed dismay that the people of Andhra Pradesh , despite delivering a strong verdict against such toxic culture in the recent elections, continue to witness the same behaviour from YSRCP. "Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition, the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem. Making disgraceful and vulgar remarks about our mothers and sisters under the guise of political vendetta is an unforgivable offence," he said. The chief minister said those who crossed all boundaries and wounded the sentiments of women in the capital region will face the strictest possible consequences. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "This is a malicious conspiracy against Amaravati. The derogatory and deliberate insults aimed at the women of that region — who protested against the previous destructive regime — are not just attacks on individuals, but an affront to womanhood itself," he said, while adding that the the NDA govt, which respects women and stands as a guardian of their self-respect, takes full responsibility to put an end to this "vile culture". Meanwhile, TDP parliamentary party leader and Narasaraopet MP Lavu Krishna Devarayalu wrote a letter to the National Commission of Women, seeking action against those who made the disparaging comments.

Somanna urges Karnataka govt to reconsider dropped railways projects

Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna, on Sunday urged Karnataka govt to reconsider its decision to drop the Chamarajanagar–Hejjala and Mysuru–Kushalnagar railway projects. Following a review meeting with Mysuru division railway officials, Somanna said he wrote to the state urging it to take up both projects and plans to personally follow up with chief minister Siddaramaiah in the next 15 days. "State govt earlier returned both proposals citing an inability to implement them," the Union minister said. "I've since written requesting a reconsideration. I also spoke to Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose and Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa, but there has been no progress so far. I will increase pressure and ensure that these projects are approved at the earliest. Developmental initiatives should go beyond party lines. " On electrification progress between Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, he said only a 1.2km stretch near Kadakola, close to Mysuru airport, remains incomplete. He said this is due to "technical challenges". "We are working on obtaining an online NOC, and once cleared, that final stretch will be completed soon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Capital Gains Exemptions for Seniors SmartAsset Learn More Undo Across the country, 99% of electrification is complete, and we aim to reach 100% by the end of the year," he said. Additionally, Somanna announced that Union govt sanctioned Rs 200 crore for the Yadgir Railway coach factory expansion, where currently only 50 employees are working. Somanna emphasised the importance of timely project execution, high-quality construction standards, and enhanced passenger amenities. He expressed satisfaction with the current pace of work and reaffirmed the central govt's commitment to improving regional connectivity. He praised chief minister Siddaramaiah for his cooperation in land acquisition matters, which enabled significant railway infrastructure progress in Karnataka. "Karnataka is seeing the implementation of 13 major projects worth around Rs 39,000 crore, including the Rayadurga–Tumakuru, Tumakuru–Davanagere, Kuduchi–Gadag, and Gadag–Wadi lines," he said. "Under the Viksit Bharat initiative, a greenfield corridor is being planned in Tumakuru, which will connect major factories directly via rail. This move is expected to drastically reduce transportation costs—from Rs 13/km by road to Rs 6–7/km by rail."
