PSD director orders honouring 42 inmates for passing Tawjihi

Jordan Times4 days ago
AMMAN — Public Security Directorate (PSD) Director Maj. Gen. Obeidallah Maaytah on Saturday ordered honouring 42 inmates from correctional and rehabilitation centres who passed the 2025 General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi).
Maaytah expressed the PSD's commitment to implementing a 'comprehensive reform philosophy' within correctional facilities, tailored to inmates' needs and aimed at helping them continue their education and lead constructive lives while in custody, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
He noted that one inmate achieved a score of 85.7 per cent, calling this outcome a 'clear' indicator of the success of the correctional system's educational and rehabilitative programmes.
These programmes, he added, are regularly reviewed, updated, and supplemented with new initiatives designed to ensure decent living conditions for inmates, support behavioural reform, and equip them with the skills needed to reintegrate into society as productive citizens after release.
Maaytah also expressed his appreciation to all staff at the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centres Department for their efforts in implementing reform policies, particularly educational initiatives that have produced such achievements.
He stressed the importance of developing new ways to help successful inmates pursue higher education and continue academic or vocational training, in cooperation with relevant institutions.

Palestinian officials say Israeli settler kills one in West Bank clash

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories — Palestinian officials said an Israeli settler shot and killed a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, while the army confirmed an off-duty soldier shot someone it said was throwing rocks. The confrontation marks the latest fatal clash in the Palestinian territory, where violence has surged since the start of the Gaza war. "Thameen Khalil Reda Dawabsheh [35 years old] was killed by settler gunfire in the town of Duma, south of Nablus," the Palestinian Authority's health ministry said in a statement. Contacted by AFP, Duma village council head Suleiman Dawabsheh said that a confrontation broke out when a group of Israeli settlers trespassed on land north of the town while farmers worked on their land. "A group of settlers arrived on a tractor and another vehicle, and immediately tried to kidnap a boy about 14-15 years old, taking him away," he told AFP. Dawabsheh said that residents managed to retrieve the boy, but that during the ensuing argument, "one of the settlers opened fire directly at the young man Thameen Dawabsheh". The army said in a statement that during engineering work near Duma, dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks towards Israelis including an off-duty soldier and a civilian, a term the army commonly uses to refer to settlers. The off-duty soldier, also a settler according to the mayor, fired warning shots at first, and when rock throwing continued, fired again until "a hit was identified". The army said that soldiers were then dispatched to break up the incident. "As a result of the rock hurling, the civilian and the soldier were lightly injured and received medical treatment at the scene," it added. Duma, a town in the northern West Bank, is a frequent theatre of settler violence. In 2015, a Palestinian couple and their baby burned to death after settlers attacked the village, a tragedy that residents remember to this day. In April 2025, hundreds of settlers attacked Duma and stabbed a villager after an Israeli teenager who often visited a nearby settlement outpost was found dead. The West Bank is home to around three million Palestinians, as well as about 500,000 Israeli settlers. Violence in the Palestinian territory, which Israel has occupied since 1967, has soared since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 triggered the Gaza war. Since then, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 968 Palestinians, including many militants, according to health ministry figures. Over the same period, at least 36 Israelis, including security forces, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations, according to official figures.

Authorities arrest individuals in Irbid linked to banned Muslim Brotherhood

AMMAN — Security forces on Monday evening arrested several individuals who had gathered at a private residence in Irbid, allegedly to discuss matters related to the dissolved Muslim Brotherhood society, according to official sources. The individuals were reportedly meeting at the house of a member of the dissolved Muslim Brotherhood society following an organised invitation that was under the surveillance of the relevant authorities, the sources said. 'The individuals were referred to the concerned judicial entity for further questioning and indictment.' Since the group was banned, relevant security entities have observed reported attempts 'to circumvent the ban by holding meetings under various pretexts, most notably holding meetings in the homes of regular cadres of the banned group in the form of "social events," according to the sources. In April, the government reverted to the Court of Cassation's decision in February 2020, to consider the Muslim Brotherhood society that was established on June 16, 1953, legally dissolved. 'Individuals who own assets that are affiliated with the dissolved Muslim Brotherhood society should contact the designated committee that was established by the Ministry of Social Development within one month,' the secretary general of the Ministry of Social Development, head of the committee, said. Otherwise, 'these individuals will be held accountable under the law,' he said. During the same month, Interior Minister Mazen Faraya announced the immediate enforcement of the law provisions on the so-called dissolved Muslim Brotherhood by considering it an illegal association. 'We decided to close all headquarters or premises that are used by the Muslim Brotherhood or sites that are shared with other entities, under penalty of legal accountability,' Faraya said at the time. He also announced during a press conference the banning of all activities related to the so-called Muslim Brotherhood and considered it an illegal association. Faraya called on the committee that is entrusted with seizing all assets related to the Muslim Brotherhood to expedite the process in accordance with the law. The minister also stressed that membership in the so-called dissolved Muslim Brotherhood is prohibited, as well as the spreading of its ideologies. He added that legal action will be taken against any individual or entity if the current investigations into the terror-related cases that were announced last week prove that there are connections with the suspects or the alleged plots. On April 15, the General Intelligence Department (GID) announced that 16 men, including some who were members of the Muslim Brotherhood, allegedly planned to cause chaos and sabotage acts in Jordan. The group was charged with terrorism and manufacturing explosive substances against the suspects involved in alleged plots targeting Jordan's national security. The GID had said that the 16 men were arrested following close intelligence monitoring since 2021.

Jordan condemns Israeli targeting of journalists in Gaza

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned Israel's 'systematic' targeting of journalists by in Gaza, following the killing of four media professionals in the Strip. In a statement on Sunday, the ministry denounced the killing of Al Jazeera correspondents Anas Al Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Al Zaher and Mohammed Noufal. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Sufian Qudah called the incident a 'war crime,' emphasising that targeting journalists constitutes a clear violation of international law, including international humanitarian law and the 1949 Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians during armed conflict. 'These repeated attacks on media personnel are unacceptable and must not go unpunished,' Qudah said, adding that the Kingdom holds the Israeli government fully responsible for the 'deliberate efforts to silence independent reporting from Gaza.' Qudah urged the international community to take immediate action to stop the violence, provide protection for journalists, medical workers, and humanitarian organisations operating in the besieged territory, and to uphold the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent state. He also called for accountability for those responsible for the crimes against civilians and media professionals.
