Timor-Leste to join Asean in October
KUALA LUMPUR: Timor-Leste's wait to be included in Asean will be over in five months, when they will be granted full membership at the next regional meeting, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced.
The Prime Minister said Asean leaders have agreed to accept Timor-Leste as the 11th member of the association at the next Asean Summit in October.
He said Timor-Leste has been working hard to fulfil requirements to become an Asean member and Malaysia is satisfied with the country's efforts.
'Malaysia, Indonesia and a number of other countries have assisted in many ways to ensure that they meet this precondition. I would say we are quite satisfied.
'The decision is to agree that they will be accepted as a full member by the next session in October,' said Anwar during his exit press conference after the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits yesterday.
He said Timor-Leste has to fulfil 'one or two' economic preconditions to be admitted as a full member of Asean.
'The consensus is that we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that they come in by October as a full member,' he added.
Current Asean members are Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines.
Timor-Leste was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2002, making it Asia's youngest democracy.
The country officially applied for Asean membership in 2011 and was granted observer status in 2022.
Its Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, who was also in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Summit, was reported as being optimistic about securing the full membership by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Anwar said as Asean Chair this year, Malaysia is hoping to come up with tangible programmes that will benefit the people by October.
Anwar said various ministries and officials will have to start working on these initiatives.
'So by October, we want to see the results. We want to see real change that will benefit the people,' he added.
The Prime Minister said the Asean Summit and Related Summits achieved its objectives by successfully bringing together the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China at the same table, crediting the outcome to the strong spirit of unity and the unwavering support of all regional leaders.
Reflecting on the engagements throughout the summit, Anwar said Malaysia's chairmanship had enabled deeper discussions with Asean's external partners.
He also said discussions held throughout the summit had been fruitful.
'There is a dramatic change in terms of attitude. The South China Sea was discussed, and we also saw exchanges between the Philippines and China.
'I'm not saying these issues can be resolved, but at least there is meaningful and positive engagement. That is the spirit of Asean,' added Anwar.
Malaysia is the Chair of Asean this year, having held the post in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8720/8763 last Friday from 2.8407/8452 the previous week, declined against the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6208/6293 and eased versus the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.8752/8826. The ringgit also trended lower against Asean currencies. The local note slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 at the end of last week from 3.2907/2960, inched down versus the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0058/0319, slid versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.3/260.8 from 258.8/259.4 and edged down against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.35/7.36 in the preceding week. — Bernama

Bangladesh chief advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to undertake official visit to Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama): Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from Monday until Wednesday (Aug 11 to Aug 13, 2025), at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement on Sunday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said the visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, and several advisors and senior government officials will accompany Yunus. The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said that Yunus will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex on Aug 12, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister. "Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence. "The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest,' the statement said. During the visit, Yunus and Anwar will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of defence, energy, strategic and international studies, capacity building in semiconductors, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed in the areas of diplomatic training and higher education. The ministry said in honour of Yunus and his delegation, the Prime Minister will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex. It said that on Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Chief Advisor will also attend a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion), an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. It said the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. - Bernama
