News18a day ago
Ayrshire (Scotland), Jul 28 (PTI) India's Diksha Dagar finished with a strong back nine in the final round of the Women's Scottish Open to give herself a boost for her next event, the AIG Women's Open, a Major.
Diksha, who made the cut on the line, added a second straight 71 to finish with rounds of 69-76-71-71 for a total of 1-under and a tied 39th position.
Diksha, who started on the 10th, had early setbacks with a bogey and a double bogey on the 12th and 13th but began her recovery with a birdie on the 18h.
On the second Diksha birdied the third and then had three birdies in a row from the fifth to the seventh. But she dropped a shot on the eighth.
The other two Indian players, Pranavi Urs and Tvesa Malik, missed the cut earlier in the week.
English star Lottie Woad started her professional career in spectacular fashion with a three-stroke victory at Dundonald Links. It's a second LET title for Woad, who won the 2025 KPMG Women's Irish Open but as an amateur.
Woad made her professional debut this week, after securing her LPGA Tour card following a T3 finish at the Amundi Evian Championship.
Woad, who won the 2025 KPMG Women's Irish Open, went into the final day with a two-shot lead having been top of the leaderboard at the 36-hole and 54-hole marks.
The 21-year-old started with back-to-back birdies on the second and third holes before nine pars on the trot, but Woad then rolled in birdies on 13 and 14.
A third bogey of the week happened on 16 for the former world number one amateur, but she finished in style with a birdie on 18 to win with a score of 21-under-par.
Woad becomes the first player to win on professional debut on the LET since Singapore's Shannon Tan at the 2024 Magical Kenya Ladies Open and the first on the LPGA Tour since Rose Zhang at the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open.
Korea's Hyo Joo Kim finished in second place on 18-under-par after a final round of 68 (-4).
Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez equalled the round of the week with a 65 (-7) on the final day to finish in a tie for third place alongside Korea's Sei Young Kim on 14-under-par.
World number one Nelly Korda finished in solo fifth place on 13-under with Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen in sixth on 11-under.
South Africa's Paula Reto clinched the second AIG Women's Open spot with her seventh-place finish after a final round of 71 (-2) in Scotland.
Korea's Mi Hyang Lee was in T8 alongside Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn with five players in a share of 10th place on the leaderboard. PTI Cor AH AH

Gautam Gambhir, chief curator clash at The Oval

New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a heated verbal argument with the chief curator at The Oval, venue of the fifth Test against England which starts on Thursday. In videos that have surfaced on X, Gambhir in the incident that happened on Tuesday can be seen animatedly pointing a finger at Lee Fortis and with some words audible, including 'You don't tell us what to do'. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and support staff interact with a groundsman during a training session at the Oval ground, in London. (PTI) India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak is then seen stepping in, taking Lee away and having a brief conversation with him. India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also joins Kotak during his conversation with Lee, while Gambhir, standing away, continues to make his point as he stands on the edge of a batting net. Later in the news conference on Tuesday, Kotak said: 'When we were having a conversation near the pitch they had sent a man to send a message for us to stay 2.5m away from the pitch. We were wearing joggers, so it was awkward.' 'We know curators are overprotective and possessive about the square. What he (Gambhir) said about the head coach is his opinion and I don't want to comment. We did nothing wrong, we were wearing rubber spikes. Even the bowlers were not wearing spikes. 'The curator also needs to know that the people he is talking to are highly skilled and intelligent people. You can be protective about the square, but not arrogant. It is not an antique that you can't touch or it will be broken. He said we are trying to grow the grass but we were wearing joggers so we didn't see the problem. 'The curator yelled at support staff when they were getting an ice box. It weighs 10kg. Gambhir objected to the way he spoke with the support staff. The way he spoke irked Gambhir as it would any head coach. Everyone knows the curator at The Oval is not the easiest person to deal with. We won't be lodging any official complaint,' he added. Kotak clarified that the wicket has grass like other venues, barring Manchester which saw the only drawn Test. The series has not been short of drama. Words were exchanged between India captain Shubman Gill and England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the final moments of Day 3 in the Lord's Test. India accused England of employing time wasting tactics to deny them the opportunity to bowl a second over, and possibly get an early breakthrough. In the fourth Test at Old Trafford, words were exchanged when late in the final session of the match after Ben Stokes offered to shake hands on a draw and Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, batting on 89 and 80 respectively, insisted on carrying on, having battled to thwart England's bid for victory. Stokes was heard saying, 'Jaddu, do you want to get a Test hundred against Brook and Duckett?' Jadeja responded, 'What do you want me to do, just walk off?' Crawley, who stood close by, chipped in: 'You can, just shake your hand.' Jadeja and Sundar both scored hundreds before the draw was eventually agreed. India's stand, to let the two batters reach the landmark, has largely been endorsed. India trail the series 1-2, but having managed to keep the series alive by drawing the Old Trafford game, can hope to push for victory to finish on level terms. The latest incident promises to add more drama to the build-up for the Oval Test.

Macau Open: Satwik-Chirag eye title run; Lakshya, Prannoy look to regain form ahead of Worlds

It has been a season of steady performances for the world No. 3 pair, who have made the semifinals at the India Open, Singapore Open, and Malaysia Open besides reaching the quarterfinals at the Indonesia Open. They, however, suffered a second-round exit at the Japan Open last week. The Asian Games champions earned yet another semifinal finish at the China Open Super 1000 last week, going down to Malaysian second seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Macau, Jul 28 (PTI) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will aim to extend their consistent run and grab their maiden title of the season at the Macau Open Super 300, starting Tuesday, as the top Indian shuttlers continue their preparations for next month's World Championships in Paris. Despite multiple deep runs, Satwik and Chirag, seeded second this week, are yet to convert their form into a title win — something they will be keen to change in the French capital. They face the Malaysian duo of Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong in the opening round. In the men's singles, former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lakshya Sen will hope to rediscover his touch ahead of the World Championships. The 23-year-old from Almora has shown glimpses of his potential but has struggled to close out key matches, including narrow losses to Li Shi Feng, Kodai Naraoka, and Shi Yu Qi in recent outings. Sen opens against Korea's Jeon Hyeok Jin. Meanwhile, HS Prannoy, the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist, will look to string together a strong run after a second-round exit at the China Open. The 33-year-old will begin his campaign against a qualifier. Teen sensation Ayush Shetty, seeded seventh, will also be in focus after clinching his maiden BWF title at the US Open Super 300 last month. He faces Chinese Taipei's Huang Yu Kai in the first round. Fresh from a bronze medal in the World University Games mixed team event, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran will look to make an impact on the BWF Tour when he opens against Malaysia's Justin Hoh. In other men's singles matches, Manraj Singh will face compatriot Tharun Mannepalli in an all-Indian clash, while S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, Rithvik Sanjeevi Satish Kumar, and Kiran George are also in the fray. In the women's singles, 16-year-old Unnati Hooda will look to carry forward the momentum from her stunning win over two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu at the China Open. She begins against seventh seed Julie Dawall Jakobsen of Denmark. Rakshita Ramraj takes on Thailand's Pornpicha Choeikeewong, Anupama Upadhayaya meets sixth seed Riko Gunji of Japan, and Aakarshi Kashyap faces former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan. In the women's doubles, top seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela will begin their campaign against Chinese Taipei's Lin Xiao Min and Peng Yu Wei. The pairs of Priya Konjengbam–Shruti Mishra and Apoorva Gahlawat–Sakshi Gahlawat will also look to make deep runs. In the mixed doubles, Sathish and Aadya Variyath take on sixth seeds Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah of Indonesia, while fifth seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto face Thailand's Ratchapol Makkasasithorn and Nattamon Laisuan. Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde will be up against Chinese Taipei's Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin. PTI ATK AT This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Jamshedpur FC beat Indian Army 1-0 for second consecutive victory in Durand Cup

Jamshedpur, Jul 29 (PTI) Sanan Mohammed's second-half strike secured a 1–0 win for Jamshedpur FC over Indian Army, marking their second consecutive victory in Group C of the 134th Durand Cup football tournament on Tuesday. With this win at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur FC moved to the top of the group with six points from two matches and are now closer to a place in the knockout stages. Indian Army dominated the first half of the game, maintaining possession and creating the better chances. The Armymen could have taken a two goal lead inside the first 15 minutes but Samir Murmu's effort from a tight angle whisked past the far post. Minutes later, Samananda Singh glanced a header wide from a corner kick. Jamshedpur FC were finding it difficult to match up with the physicality of the Army side as they dominated the midfield with Lethaolen Khongsai and P Christopher Kamei dictating the pace of the attacks. The Red Miners were using long ball and long throw-ins to break down the Indian Army defence, but without much success. Amrit Gope also made a fingertip save to deny Army captain Sunil's effort in added time of the first half to keep the scores level at the lemon break. The home side took the lead in the 52nd minute, finishing a move which started from another long throw. Karthik Choudhary headed the ball back into the danger area and Sanan Mohammed chested the ball down and finished expertly past the diving Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir in goal. Jamshedpur had better control in the game after taking the lead even though Indian Army had the major share of possession and attempts on goal but there were very few shots on target that troubled the goalkeeper. The closest they came to score was when Liton Shil hit the crossbar with a thumping long ranger in the closing stages of the second half. There was more drama towards the end of the match as Indian Army goalkeeper Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir was given the marching orders for a challenge on Jayesh Rane outside the penalty box, after the midfielder beat the off-side trap and ran through free towards goal. Defender Samananda Singh took the goalkeeping duties for the last minutes of injury time as Indian Army were pushing for an equaliser. Suhair also hit the crossbar in the last moments of the game as Jamshedpur FC negotiated the last barrage of attacks to earn the hard fought three points.
