Mom Sues Disney Wave Pool for $2,000,000: 'There Was Blood'

Yahoo28-04-2025

The happiest place on earth turned ugly, bloody even, recently, when a mom was knocked out by a wave at Typhoon Lagoon, the black sheep of the wave pool world, at Disney's Magic Kingdom.
Kimberly Panetta was on a family vacation at the Florida amusement park when the injury occurred. She was waiting for her three-year-old to come down a slide in a kiddie pool. That's when a 'mammoth wave' swept her off her feet, and 'pummeled her.' The 45-year-old was hurt.
And now, she's suing for a cool two million dollars.
'It was so powerful it was actually dragging us under the water for several feet,' Panetta told The New York Post. 'I just thank God I had the sense to push her [her daughter] above as I was getting dragged. I knew if she was the one getting dragged she would have been cut all over.'
The incident actually happened in 2022; but the lawsuit is being filed now.
When the wave whacked her off her feet, Panetta said: 'I felt pain immediately and I looked down and there was blood. You think you're in the happiest place on Earth and the safest place but it's like being dragged on concrete — it's very rough.'
Afterwards, the trip 'was ruined and she was stuck limping around applying bandages, salves and creams and was forced to avoid swimming and enjoying planned visits to the parks. We had all these plans and we had to cancel everything. I couldn't even go in the pool where we were staying, I had to stay inside. Everything was completely ruined.'
Disney, for their part, offered Panetta a $250 credit.
But the accident left lingering scars, and self-consciousness, hence the lawsuit.
As for Typhoon Lagoon, it's been around for quite some time – Kelly Slater even won an event there in 1997, with Rob Machado winning the next year, according to Matt Warshaw's Encyclopedia of Surfing – however, it doesn't have the quality of a wave that most modern wave pools feature. But apparently, it was enough to knock out a mom and prompt a lawsuit for two mill.
Valid? Or total Karen move?

Disney to Pay Comcast an Additional $439 Million for Hulu Stake as Streaming Saga Comes to an End

The years-long saga over the fate of Hulu is officially resolved, with Disney set to pay Comcast $439 million to finally complete the sale of its 33 percent stake in the streaming service. Back in 2023, Disney officially agreed to pay a floor of $8.61 billion for Comcast's stake in Hulu, but the companies couldn't agree on a final valuation for the stake, leading to an extended appraisal process. That process is now complete as of Monday, with a final price clearly much closer to Disney's valuation than Comcast's. While Disney was able to take operational control of Hulu as it sorted out the value of Comcast's stake, the completion of the deal will give the company more leeway to more fully integrate Hulu into its streaming offerings. 'We are pleased this is finally resolved,' Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. 'We have had a productive partnership with NBCUniversal, and we wish them the best of luck. Completing the Hulu acquisition paves the way for a deeper and more seamless integration of Hulu's general entertainment content with Disney+ and, soon, with ESPN's direct-to-consumer product, providing an unrivaled value proposition for consumers.' Disney began integrating Hulu content into Disney+ in late 2023, and expanded that initiative last year. Disney says that the full acquisition of Hulu will be completed by July 24, 2025. Disney acquired a controlling stake in Hulu in connection with its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, but Comcast's stake remained the big sticking point. 'Hulu was a great start for us in streaming that generated nearly $10 billion in proceeds for Comcast and created an important audience for NBCUniversal's world-class content,' a Comcast spokesperson says. 'We wish Disney well with Hulu and appreciate the cooperative way our teams managed the partnership.' Decades After Its Joint-Venture Journey Began, Hulu's Sole Ownership By Disney 'Finally Resolved' With $439M Payment To NBCU, Bob Iger Exults

The long and winding road of Hulu, which started in the pre-smartphone era as a streaming joint venture involving NBC and Fox, has concluded with the finalizing of Disney's buy-out of Comcast. Disney is paying an extra $438.7 million to Comcast's NBCUniversal, on top of the $8.6 billion it committed in 2023 under the terms established in a put/call arrangement unveiled in 2019. That deal, which was accompanied by Disney's $71.3 billion acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox, fueled Disney's streaming ambitions as it prepared to launch Disney+. A $27.5 billion floor value was set, with multiple third-party appraisals then entering the discussions. Disney's appraisal, not surprisingly, came in below the $27.5 billion level, while NBCU rendered an estimate that was 'substantially' higher, Disney said in an SEC filing. Disney CEO Bob Iger and Comcast CEO Brian Roberts publicly jockeyed over the value of the service in a sector increasingly defined by streaming. The transaction, completed Monday, 'takes into account the valuation of a third appraiser,' the filing explained. Had the NBCU appraiser prevailed, the result would have been a payment to Comcast/NBCU of about $5 billion, Disney said. The buyout is slated to close on or before July 24. 'We are pleased this is finally resolved,' Iger said in a statement. 'We have had a productive partnership with NBCUniversal, and we wish them the best of luck. Completing the Hulu acquisition paves the way for a deeper and more seamless integration of Hulu's general entertainment content with Disney+ and, soon, with ESPN's direct-to-consumer product, providing an unrivaled value proposition for consumers.' Comcast said in a statement provided to Deadline, 'Hulu was a great start for us in streaming that generated nearly $10 billion in proceeds for Comcast and created an important audience for NBCUniversal's world-class content. We wish Disney well with Hulu and appreciate the cooperative way our teams managed the partnership.' Disney has been more closely integrating Hulu with its Disney+ flagship and its linear networks in recent years. Hulu remains a key participant in Disney's vertical bundles as well as a successful one involving a third-party, HBO Max. After NBC and Fox hopped onboard the streaming pioneer ahead of its official founding in 2007, Disney soon followed and Time Warner would go on to take a 10% stake. In-fighting often hindered the progress of Hulu as its strategy continuously shifted. While each participant in the JV fell away as companies pursued their own independent strategies, the irony is that a Hulu-style coming together of legacy players is now coalescing as media giants grapple with the costs and murky financials of streaming compared with the lucrative pay-TV business.
