Samsung plans to unveil its first trifold smartphone in 2025
Samsung Electronics Co. plans to begin selling a so-called trifold smartphone later this year, joining rival Huawei Technologies Co. in exploring a relatively untested market that pushes the boundaries of foldable technology.
Acting mobile and consumer electronics chief TM Roh disclosed the plan Wednesday on the sidelines of the company's Unpacked event in New York, where Samsung unveiled three foldable smartphones as part of a strategy to reinforce its leadership in the category.
"We are working hard to release the trifold by the end of the year,' Roh told reporters. The company hasn't decided on a name for the gadget.
In developing its own trifold, Samsung is gearing up to compete with Chinese rival Huawei, which unveiled the world's first trifold smartphone in September. Huawei's device, called the Mate XT, folds in two places, and when completely unfurled, it offers a large 10-inch display for advanced multitasking and more immersive entertainment consumption.
Samsung's newly announced Galaxy Z Fold 7 phone, which folds in one place, has a smaller 8-inch inner display, though it's far thinner than Huawei's Mate XT when folded shut.
Apple Inc. is expected to enter the foldables category as early as next year, Bloomberg has reported, with an iPhone similar in concept to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Other folding smartphones like Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola's Razr Ultra fold down vertically to a compact shape with a smaller outer screen intended for brief interactions. – Bloomberg

Pony.ai steps up mass production of robotaxis, targets overseas expansion
Chinese autonomous driving technology firm is gearing up to mass produce driverless cabs to make its robotaxis widely available and more affordable, as technological advancement helps shorten its path to commercialisation. The Guangzhou-based company – the only firm with approval to operate robotaxi services on the mainland's four most developed cities – is banking on an accelerated pace of commercialisation at home and abroad to achieve cost efficiency, according to Lou Tiancheng, co-founder and chief technology officer. 'We are anticipating a pickup in production [of robotaxis],' he said in an interview on the weekend. 'Over the past few years, we have solidified our tie-ups with carmakers to attest to the feasibility of building a large volume of driverless cabs.' would partner with local carmakers GAC and BAIC, and Toyota of Japan in production, and target a fleet of 1,000 robotaxis by the end of this year, he added. Nasdaq-listed received a permit to run its robotaxis in Shanghai's Pudong New Area last week. The permit allows the company to charge fares, pioneering the move in the nation's major commercial and financial hub. will initially operate its fleet in the Jinqiao and Huamu areas totalling a combined 40 sq km. That will be gradually expanded to other parts of Pudong, China's 1,400 sq km pioneer zone to showcase progress in building a modern socialist system. 'We believe this milestone demonstrates Pony's technological and operational readiness in the robotaxi business,' BofA Securities said in a report on Monday, reiterating its buy recommendation. 'We believe that Pony will scale up its robotaxi fleet size and see improving profitability, given better economies of scale.' Meanwhile, has expanded its operations in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, offering its services 'at any time'. It previously operated only between 7am and 11pm. The company is also looking to create new revenue sources by offering value-added in-car infotainment services to customers or supplying autonomous driving control systems to carmakers, Lou said. It was looking at Hong Kong, South Korea, the Middle East and Europe as potential markets to widen its reach, he added. Baidu's autonomous driving unit Apollo, and robotaxi start-up WeRide are deemed by analysts and industry officials as China's answer to US-based Waymo, the global leader in self-driving taxi service. Driverless cabs could account for 6 per cent of China's taxi market, aided by advanced digital infrastructure and public acceptance, HSBC said in a report earlier this month. China's robotaxi market could eventually be worth about US$40 billion a year, the bank said, without giving a time frame. reported a 4.3 per cent increase in revenue to US$75 million last year, while its net loss more than doubled to US$275 million. Shanghai authorities also granted licences to Baidu's Apollo, WeRide, Jinjiang Taxi, Dazhong Transportation and SAIC Motor to operate robotaxis in Pudong, on the sidelines of the three-day World Artificial Intelligence Conference in the city. The issuance of these licences – on a pilot basis – demonstrates Shanghai's efforts in advancing the development of driverless technology.

Tesla signs US$4.3b LG battery deal to cut China dependence
SEOUL: South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) has signed a US$4.3 billion (RM18.2 billion) deal to supply Tesla with energy storage system batteries, said a person familiar with the matter, as the US company looks to reduce reliance on Chinese imports due to tariffs. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will be supplied from LGES's US factory in Michigan, the person said on condition of anonymity because the details were not public. LGES announced earlier yesterday that it had signed a US$4.3 billion contract to supply LFP batteries over three years globally, without identifying the customer or saying if they would be used in vehicles or energy storage systems. The South Korean company said last week it would try to offset sluggish electric vehicle demand by increasing sales of storage batteries thanks to a global surge in demand for power driven by data centres to train artificial intelligence. 'In accordance with our agreement, we are unable to disclose the customer's identity due to confidentiality obligations,' LGES told Reuters. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tesla chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said in April that US tariffs had an 'outsized' impact on its energy business, since it sources LFP batteries from China. 'We will also be working on securing additional supply chain from non-China-based suppliers, but it will take time,' he said. Tesla this week also announced a US$16.5 billion deal to buy chips from Samsung Electronics' factory in Texas as South Korean companies expand their US presence to meet local demand. Three South Korean cabinet-level officials met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington in a push to close a trade deal ahead of an Aug 1 deadline for 25% tariffs on US imports from South Korea to kick in, Seoul said yesterday. LGES is one of the few US producers of LFP batteries, a battery chemistry long dominated by Chinese rivals that have little presence in the US market. It started production of LFP batteries at its Michigan factory in May. The company said it was considering converting some electric vehicle battery production lines in the US to cater to energy storage systems in response to slowing EV demand.
