26th foundation function of NCP: Ajit Pawar asks party workers to gear up for civic polls
Refraining from any direct criticism or remark on Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), NCP chief Ajit Pawar on Tuesday urged party workers to put in all efforts to ensure victory in the upcoming civic elections.
'Many of our leaders are founder members of the NCP. It has grown since its formation in 1999. However, the party has not got a majority in elections to form a government. Alliances had to be formed and the NCP joined the NDA,' said Pawar at the 26th foundation function of the NCP.
He said the NCP joined hands with the Shiv Sena in 2019 and it indicates adjustment has to be made at times to be in power. 'Though we have joined the NDA we have not given up our ideology of secularism. There are many political parties who believe in secularism and have been part of the NDA,' Pawar said.
Earlier, the NCP passed two resolutions over the success of Operation Sindoor and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his impressive performance in the last 11 years by leading the NDA-led Centre.
The NCP chief did not say anything on speculations over merger of the two NCPs nor criticised the opposition NCP (SP). 'We want to resolve public issues. The country is developing, and the state is also developing. I want to assure that there will be no compromise on the secular fabric of the party. Our ideology of secularism and creating progressive society continues. We have been against extremism and will continue to do so,' he said, justifying the party's joining the NDA on development agenda.
The NCP received a setback in the Lok Sabha elections but later worked hard for the Assembly elections resulting in the 'ladki bahin' scheme, said Pawar, adding, 'I will not let the scheme to be closed.'
The NCP chief said the civic polls are only a few months away. 'The BMC election will be wardwise while other municipal corporations will likely have a four-ward electoral panel system for civic polls. We should be fully prepared for it. NCP ministers will be asked to hold election rallies per week in municipal corporations to activate party workers. The pre-poll alliance for civic elections will be as per the stand of local party units,' he said.
'Real political fight coming now with elections to 28 municipal corporations, 25 zila parishad or municipal councils and 285 panchayat samiti. So work hard for civic polls,' said Pawar, urging party workers to set a target of enrolling one crore new members for the party.

Watch: California Senator Handcuffed, Forcibly Removed From LA Press Conference
Los Angeles: California's stand-off with President Donald Trump's administration ratcheted up Thursday, after a sitting US senator was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a press conference on controversial immigration raids that have spurred days of protests. The shocking incident, which came after the Republican president sent troops into Los Angeles over the objections of local and state officials, was swiftly slammed by furious Democrats who said it "reeks of totalitarianism." Video footage shows Senator Alex Padilla, a Democrat, being pushed from the room at a federal building in Los Angeles as he tried to ask Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about the raids. "I'm Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary," he said as two men grappled with him in front of journalists, including from AFP. Footage filmed by Padilla's staff outside the room shows the senator being pushed to the ground and handcuffed. What just happened to @SenAlexPadilla is absolutely abhorrent and outrageous. He is a sitting United States Senator. This administration's violent attacks on our city must end. — Mayor Karen Bass (@MayorOfLA) June 12, 2025 Democratic-led California is currently embroiled in battles with the White House on several fronts, with Governor Gavin Newsom branding Trump "dictatorial" as his lawyers prepared to face off with the administration over the deployment of 4,700 troops to the city. "If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question... you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community," Padilla told reporters later at a press conference. The incident "reeks of totalitarianism," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, calling for an investigation. "Trump and his shock troops are out of control," Newsom posted on social media. The White House hit back, claiming it was a "theater-kid stunt" and claiming without evidence that Padilla "lunged toward Secretary Noem." Noem slammed Padilla's interruption as "inappropriate." A Homeland Security spokesman said she later met with the senator for 15 minutes. Noem was addressing reporters after almost a week of demonstrations in Los Angeles ignited by the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. The mostly-peaceful demonstrations have been marred by some eye-catching violence, with cars torched and rocks thrown at police officers. Trump, who has repeatedly exaggerated the scale of the unrest, deployed 4,000 National Guard as well as 700 US Marines. Critics have accused the Republican of a power grab and a judge was set to review the deployments' legality. Trump took credit Thursday for making Los Angeles "safe and sound." Anger at Trump's crackdown and the use of masked, armed immigration agents, backed by uniformed soldiers, is spreading to other cities. Nationwide protests were planned for Saturday. - 'Fear and terror' - A federal judge in San Francisco was set to hear arguments on whether use of the troops is constitutional, with Newsom alleging the president "is creating fear and terror." Trump on Thursday said Newsom -- seen as a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 -- had "totally lost control of the situation" and should thank him for "saving his ass." California also sued Trump's administration Thursday over his move to scrap the state's tailpipe emission rules and its drive to phase out gas-powered cars. Trump was elected last year after campaigning on a promise to launch historic mass deportations. But with his mounting crackdown rippling through industries heavily reliant on immigrant labor -- such as farming, construction and hospitality -- Trump on Thursday said he had heard employers' complaints and hinted at a forthcoming policy shift. "We're going to have an order on that pretty soon, I think. We can't do that to our farmers -- and leisure too, hotels," he said. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke up Thursday, saying she had told a visiting US official that "we didn't agree with the use of raids to detain people working honestly in the United States." Protests also took place in Spokane, Seattle, Tucson, Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston, according to US media. A nationwide "No Kings" movement was expected on Saturday, when Trump will attend a highly unusual military parade in the US capital. The Washington parade, featuring warplanes and tanks, has been organized to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the US Army but also happens to be the day of Trump's 79th birthday.

Triumph of India's diplomatic crusade against terror
Another vital goal was to impress on our international interlocutors Pakistan's complicity in such acts of terror and its malign nurturing of terror groups, weaponised against India as an instrument of state policy. The ultimate objective of this outreach was to garner global support for India's counterterrorism efforts—all while driving home the point that the perpetrators of terror and the victims of it must never be spoken of in the same breath, let alone be the object of mediation, as if terrorists and their victims could be placed on an equal plane. But even while these delegations where on their missions, conflicting views surfaced in our congested (and often confused) news space on the question of their success, with some dismissing it as a drain on taxpayers' money. The truth is that we have succeeded, emphatically and evidently, in what we set out to do. As the leader of one of the seven delegations, these are my reflections on some of the achievements of our outreach across five nations in South, Central, and North America: Guyana, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and the US. In all these five countries, our delegation was greeted with tremendous enthusiasm and regard for India's democratic, inclusive, and united approach to this crucial national security concern. With our diversity—of political affiliation, faith, mother tongue and native region—on ample display, yet speaking the same language of resolve and righteousness, we undertook a series of high-profile engagements. Notably, we met the President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali; Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier Mark Anthony Phillips; Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin; and Vice President of the US, J D Vance. To ensure that our message resounds in the highest decision- and law-making forums of these countries, we provided thorough briefings on Operation Sindoor and India's evolving counterterrorism policy to government officials and lawmakers—including the heads of external affairs committees in all five countries, presidents of the national assembly in two, and in the US, the Senate foreign relations committee, House foreign affairs committee, and the India Caucus). To shape public discourse in these nations, we extensively engaged with the media and policy experts, participated in think tank deliberations—as with the Council on Foreign Relations in the US— and brought the Indian diaspora up to speed with developments back at home, providing them with accurate information to serve as advocates for India's position. Though our target audience was those concerned with foreign policy who could make an impact and we had no unrealistic expectations of mass media attention in a crowded news space, our outreach was positively covered by major outlets in the countries concerned. While anchored in the core issue of terrorism, our engagements also spanned broader domains of strategic, technological, defence, trade and economic cooperation, serving to deepen our bonds with the five nations.
