The United Football League will crown its champion for its 2025 season on Saturday. The Michigan Panthers and DC Defenders will square off for the right to hoist the UFL championship trophy.
Neither the Panthers nor the Defenders have won a championship in the modern era of spring football. Michigan won a title during the original USFL days in 1983, but the current Panthers are technically unrelated to that team and have not appeared in a championship game since the 2022 USFL reboot.
Meanwhile, DC only came into existence ahead of the 2020 XFL season and lost its lone championship game appearance in 2023 to the Arlington Renegades.
Mike Nolan's Panthers enter the championship sporting the UFL's highest-scoring offense and are fresh off a 44-29 USFL conference championship game win over the three-time reigning spring-league champion Birmingham Stallions. Dual-threat quarterback Bryce Perkins was named the UFL's Offensive Player of the Year and will be asked to continue to lead Michigan's offense to success, alongside bruising running back Toa Taua.
Shannon Harris' Defenders are coming off a stellar defensive effort against the St. Louis Battlehawks in a 36-18 XFL conference championship win. They are spearheaded by quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, who led the UFL in touchdown passes and will rely heavily on their top-ranked passing offense to match Michigan's output.
USA TODAY Sports is tracking all the action from St. Louis as the Panthers and Defenders battle for the UFL championship. Below are the updates and highlight plays from the game.

Panthers' poaching of Canberra player that could see Roosters star sign with Raiders

Penrith's signing of young playmaker Keahn Skipps from Canberra could open the door for Sandon Smith to land at the Raiders. Reports emerged this week that Smith is in talks with the Raiders about joining Ricky Stuart's team, with Canberra suffering a hit to their playmaking stocks in recent times. NRL halfback Jamal Fogarty will join Manly next season on a three-year deal, with young gun Ethan Sanders likely to step into the role. Skipps had emerged as another option to fill Fogarty's boots, and captained Canberra's Jersey Flegg (Under-21) side. But news emerged this week that Skipps had signed a three-year deal to join Ivan Cleary at the Panthers. With Fogarty and Skipps departing, it could explain why the Raiders are going after Smith. Smith has been given permission to leave the Roosters a year early if he can secure a deal with a rival club. The 22-year-old made a bright start to 2025 while playing five-eighth for the Roosters, but lost his spot in first-grade when Sam Walker returned from injury. Walker and Hugo Savala have cemented their spots in the halves for Trent Robinson's side, and the arrival of Daly Cherry-Evans in 2026 will hamper Smith even further. The Roosters also have young gun Toby Rodwell as a future star in the halves, meaning Smith has become surplus to requirements. "He's been in conversations with the Raiders, the Raiders are looking at some depth," Michael Chammas said on Channel 9 this week. "I don't know if it will play out that way, whether or not he wants to go somewhere and start. Options are limited." Newcastle also keen to sign Sandon Smith Smith could be a good option for the Raiders if they don't think Sanders is ready for NRL level. The 21-year-old joined Canberra from the Parramatta Eels this season, and has big raps on him. On Tuesday, veteran journalist Phil Rothfield reported that Newcastle have emerged as a suitor for Smith and have made him a sizeable offer. According to Rothfield, the Knights view Smith as their starting hooker and are keen to give him regular playing time at No.9. The Knights have Dylan Brown arriving in 2026 to partner Fletcher Sharpe in the halves, and Smith would be a handy pick-up to add to a spine that also includes Kalyn Ponga. Smith is from the central coast of NSW, meaning a move to Newcastle would see him get closer to home. Tyson Gamble and Jack Cogger are both on the way out, with Cogger agreeing to re-join Penrith for 2026. The youngster's management reportedly asked the Raiders for a release a number of times this year, saying the 19-year-old was homesick. Skipps is originally from the Gold Coast, and Stuart expected him to sign with a Queensland club. But the teenager is moving to Penrith, where he'll back-up the Panthers' gun halves pairing of Cleary and Blaize Talagi.

Cleary calls for NRL rule change that would disadvantage Storm against Panthers

Ivan Cleary has called on the NRL to change the rules around tackling attacking players in the air, and it comes with the Melbourne Storm having a clear advantage over the Panthers in their grand final rematch on Thursday night. Controversy has erupted in recent weeks over the NRL's interpretation of the much-maligned rule, with the Storm and Sharks both being awarded penalty tries last weekend. The Storm got a penalty try against the Broncos when Coates was deemed to have been tackled in the air near the line, and the same occurred for the Sharks against the Dragons with Teig Wilton. Under the current rules, players can't be tackled in their air regardless of whether they're the attacker or defender. The rules used to stipulate that an attacking player could be tackled in the air as it meant defenders would have virtually no other option but to allow their opponent to score tries if they caught the ball in the in-goal. But the rule was changed in 2020 due to concerns over what it meant for player safety. Under the current system, defenders have to wait for the attacker's feet to hit the ground before they can tackle, otherwise they risk a penalty try. On Thursday night, the Storm will have a glaring advantage over the Panthers if Coates is marking up against the much smaller Brian To'o. In State of Origin 1, To'o was sin-binned when he tackled Coates in the air while trying to prevent a try. If they're marking each other on Thursday night, there's no doubt To'o will be peppered with high kicks. Ivan Cleary wants rule to be tweaked by NRL But according to Panthers coach Cleary, the NRL needs to fix the rule. On Tuesday, Cleary questioned whether the interpretation of the rule has "drifted" from it's original intent, saying: "I'm not comfortable. Some of the (rulings) you've seen have nothing to do with safety, so I think there's a little bit of common sense needed around that rule. "It's one of those where the rule was originally made, we tend to forget why it was made, and we drift off, and it becomes something else. As long as it's deemed safe, I think you should at least get the opportunity to try to stop a try in that situation. Anyone who matches up against some of these wingers, including Xavier, it's a tough ask." RELATED: Damning reason behind calls for permanent Latrell Mitchell shift Sydney clubs enter race for Tino after $7.5 million offer rocks NRL The Storm had success in Round 24 last year when they targeted To'o with kicks, but the Panthers adjusted in the grand final and allowed Melbourne's wingers to catch the ball unopposed before smothering them as soon as they landed. 'That's part of being a good team. You've got to adapt whether it's interpretations or trends in the game,' Cleary said. 'We're no different and we try to do that as much as we can. There are many ways that we can try to combat things like that. The best way is to not let them down there too often.' Brian To'o speaks out before Xavier Coates clash The Panthers have the option of switching Thomas Jenkins to the right wing to mark Coates, with To'o giving the Storm flyer a 12cm height advantage. To'o said on Tuesday: 'Don't tackle him in the air or take his legs out because that can do a lot of damage. 'I'm not really aware (of the rule) at the time, it's more about me competing for the ball. As long as the person comes down safely, I think that's all that matters. In terms of all the rules, it's one of those hard ones. The majority of the wingers are taller than me, so there's not much that I can do. It's my job to compete for those high balls, so as long as both of us come down safely, that's all that matters.'
