Police cordon off home and arrest ‘arsonists' as investigations into house fire start
On Sunday July 27, fire fighters were called to reports of a house fire in Protheroe Street, Ferndale around 1.24am.
Several properties were evacuated, and a rest centre was set up for those affected.
A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: 'SWFRS received a call at approximately 01:24 to reports of a domestic fire in Ferndale.
'Crews, multiple fire engines, a water bowser and specialist support units attended the scene and extinguished the fire.'
It has now been confirmed that the fire was deliberately started by arsonists.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: 'Early indications reveal that the fire was started deliberately. Within 30 minutes of the fire being reported a car was proactively stopped by officers from our Roads Policing Unit and three men aged 18, 19 and 23 and a 19-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. All four remain in police custody.
'Officers continue to maintain a police cordon on Protheroe Street as our investigations continue. Emergency services, in collaboration with partner agencies, are managing the fire's impact on those effected and the wider community. To provide further assistance a rest centre has been set up by the local authority to support those displaced by the incident.
'The local residents have shown strong community spirit by rallying together to support those families effected and we would like to thank them for their understanding and co-operation during this ongoing investigation.'
Police are asking that anyone with doorbell or CCTV footage from properties on Protheroe Street, Brown Street, Irfon Street, and New Street from 10pm on Sunday July 27 to 2am this morning, Monday July 28, to get in touch.
They would also like to hear from anyone with dashcam footage who was on any of the streets at the highlighted time.

Missing Greensburg man's car located in Westmoreland County, police say
Police in Westmoreland County have located the vehicle of a man who has been missing and last seen in Greensburg nearly two weeks ago. Investigators say that a concerned citizen found the white Toyota Avalon belonging to Ruben Carranza off of Ridge Road in Acme on Saturday. Police say their investigation revealed that the car was purposely hidden on August 5, the same day Carranza first publicly reported missing. Carranza was last seen in Greensburg on July 29. According to police, the timing of the vehicle being hidden was no coincidence and that someone in the Acme area knows something. So far, evidence shows the car was first taken somewhere else on July 29 before it was moved to Ridge Road. Carranza's cell phone last pinged in the Mt. Pleasant area. Authorities say they searched there, Mammoth Park, Lynn Run State Park, and Beam Rocks, all places he visited often. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Six die in fire in Charles County, Md.
Six people — four children and two adults — died in a house fire Sunday in Charles County, Maryland, the state fire marshal said. The blaze was reported at about 8:40 a.m. on Declaration Court North in the Waldorf area of the county, authorities said. The names and ages of the victims were not available immediately.

Art Briles, fired Baylor coach and Jeff Lebby father-in-law, at Mississippi State football practice
STARKVILLE — Art Briles, the former Baylor football coach who was fired in 2016 after an investigation into multiple sexual assault accusations in the program, attended Mississippi State's preseason practice on Aug. 4. Briles is the father-in-law of coach Jeff Lebby. Briles wore a Mississippi State hat, shorts and shoes and spent most of the 25-minute viewing window for media speaking with various members of the staff, including Lebby. Briles is not a part of Mississippi State and isn't being hired by the team, an MSU athletics spokesperson told The Clarion Ledger. "Our football program and entire athletics department prides itself on being a family environment," the spokesperson added in a statement sent to The Clarion Ledger. "Family members are welcome at practices with the understanding that team boundaries and focus are respected.' Baylor fired Briles after an internal investigation into the university's handling of an extensive number of sexual assault accusations, including those against players on the football team during Briles' tenure. An NCAA investigation cleared him in August 2021 of any NCAA violations but was critical of Briles' actions at Baylor. Briles has not coached in college since a four-day stint as the Grambling State offenisve coordinator in 2022. He resigned, citing that he'd be a distraction to the team. Lebby was an assistant coach at Baylor from 2008-16.
