Animal rights activists put AFL WAGs on notice for Brownlow Medal
AFL WAGs have been put on notice ahead of the 2025 Brownlow Medal.

But change could be on the way.
In a letter penned to the AFL, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have called for the league to implement a ban for the ceremony in September.
The activist group wants every single WAG to avoid wearing anything containing feathers or fur.
'The Brownlow Medal awards the fairest and best, but there's nothing remotely fair about birds being live plucked, factory farmed and killed for their feathers,' PETA's Senior Campaigns Advisor Mimi Bekhechi said.
'We urge the AFL to make real birds' feathers as unwelcome on the Brownlow red carpet as cheating is on the field.'

The letter also added that wearing gowns with feathers 'is a betrayal' to the animals of which several teams are named.
'Several AFL teams are named after birds. Allowing attendees of the Brownlow Medal Celebration to wear the cruelly obtained feathers of these sensitive, clever animals is a betrayal,' the letter from PETA stated.
'The most beautiful thing the belles of the (foot)ball can wear is compassion.'

The latest move from PETA comes after they called on the Brisbane Broncos to retire their long-time mascot, Buck.
Since 2010 Buck has been a fan favourite, with pundits cheering and celebrating him every time he gallops onto the field with trainer and rider Natalie Siiankoski.
In May they penned an open letter to the Broncos calling for his immediate removal stating it is simply wrong to put the horse through 'the stress of being a mascot'.
Despite their hopes, the Broncos wasted no time in shutting down the request by stating Buck wouldn't be going anywhere.

'Buck is an iconic, much-loved and much cared for member of the Broncos family and has been for a very long time,' the Broncos said in a statement to news.com.au
'We have no plans to retire Buck, and our game day staff will continue, as we always have, to work with his rider Nat and the stadium to ensure the highest level of safety, for both Buck and our fans in stadia.'
If it was up to PETA, the axing of Buck is not the only change the Broncos would make, with the non-profit organisation urging the NRL club to also change its name and badge to stop glorifying rodeos while also giving a nod to their indigenous roots.
'The team could even adopt the name the 'Brisbane Boomerangs' after the impressive Aboriginal weapon — a nod to the team's fostering of Indigenous talent and commitment to equality,' PETA's letter stated.

Wagga Riverside preview: Carroll's gelding can Salute Again on Monday
TRAINER Wayne Carroll will either be off to the bank with his cut of $13,950 or undertake his tenth trip to Sydney later this month with Salute Again depending on the outcome of Monday's Jockeys Celebration Day Handicap at Wagga. Carroll's chestnut is on three career wins heading into today's Riverside meeting, one more would rule him ineligible for any future TAB Highways. Salute Again is no stranger to the country-only weekend features having contested nine of them spanning June 24, 2023 to June 26 in 2025. It started so well for the Riverina housed gelding, champion jockey (now Wagga trainer) Danny Beasley steering the then $26 pop to an emphatic win at his very first Highway mission at Royal Randwick. But in his eight Highways since, the only constant has been luck, or lack thereof. 'I don't know how many times the jockeys that rode him in a Highway have come back and apologised,'' Carroll said. 'I know we all hear the same story so many thousands of times but when you go to Sydney and you're unlucky, it is a harder pill to swallow just because there is so much time involved in getting them ready and getting up there and getting them to the race. 'He's been one of those horses that either drew badly and has been caught very wide and in the races where he drew well he's just been locked-up behind and can't get out. 'He will love the 1200m on Monday and with my apprentice Ella McGuirk on board, claiming three (kilos), from a nice draw, he will run a really good race.' Carroll will have a second Starspangledbanner foal to fly up the flag on Monday namely Witch Of November who contests the NSW Jockeys Association Country Boosted Class 1 Handicap over 1065m. The four-year-old is building a tidy resume boasting a win, two seconds and a third from her seven outings. 'I purchased her online years ago as a yearling and didn't sort of have, how do I say it, great expectations for her but as she has raced, she has just become so courageous, tough, whatever you want to call it,'' says Carroll. 'She is just a real trier. 'I would think that from the nice gate on Monday that she is going to be a really nice chance. 'She has been up for a while so she will go for a break after this run no matter what happens and she'll be a nice country horse going forward.' Carroll's first runner in the 2025/26 season is Riverbend Star which can lay claim to being a member of one of the true foundation families in the Australian Stud Book. 'He just needs experience, he is a very immature young horse,'' Carroll said. 'He drew a really bad gate but that won't be a worry because he is a bit crowd-shy. 'He is out of a nice family-line and he'll be a lot better horse next time in.' Riverbend Gold's broodmare sires start with Filante, Sovereign Red and Bletchingly and trace back to the legendary, Ajax. Ajax's presence in most post-war pedigrees in Australia is via his daughter, the celebrated broodmare gem - Civic Pride (Riverbend Gold's seventh dam). Civic Pride won the 1944 Gimcrack Stakes and went on to throw two giants of 1950s racing namely the Victoria Derby, Rosehill and Canterbury Guineas, Champion Stakes, Hobartville Stakes as well as VRC and St Leger Stakes winner Pride Of Egypt and Flight Stakes winner Amneris.

Belnera was fifth in the Listed Dequetteville in Adelaide as a 2YO on debut and went on to place at MV and Caulfield. Runner-up at her first go for Peter Morgan on a Heavy 10 at Wagga and to a handy horse. Impending Imprint sent out some encouraging signs in her July 18 trial at Albury. Donna Scott/Blaike McDougall combo is a winning one! McPhillamy was a bit of a dark horse out of that same trial. Bet: Belnera to win, box trifecta 5,6,8,12 RACE 3 Party Boss is trained at Wagga by Gary Colvin who is known to have a good opinion of this daughter of Farnan out of a US stakes-winning mare by Kentucky Derby winner - Big Brown. So much so that Colvin ran her in the Black Opal and the Preview at the end of the first preparation. Performing Diva was spelled after a creditable second in a reasonably strong Country Maiden at home at Goulburn on Feb 28. Scratched from Forbes on Sunday but is drawn betterat Moruya on Tuesday. Vinari and Rita Red have claims. Bet: Party Boss to win RACE 4 Magic Leprechaun is a very interesting horse in pedigree terms. For one, he is bred on a similar cross, albeit reversed, as Everest favourite, Ka Ying Rising. Both horses were bred in NZ, Magic Leprechaun was born at Ardsley Stud who stood this gelding's maternal grandsire Lord Ballina all his life. As for form, Magic Leprechaun is a last start Heavy 8 winner. The wet won't be any concern for Antisocial who has two wins from three starts on Heavy. Corumbene Stud bred gelding Getty has finished on the podium at exactly half of his 26 starts. Bet: Magic Leprechaun to win, quinella 1,3 RACE 5 Witch Of November has raced seven times for a rather impressive win at Tumut together with two seconds and a third. We should also point out that the Wayne Carroll trained daughter of Starspangledbanner has two seconds and a third from her only three starts on Heavy tracks. Go well. Gulgong gelding Hard To Impress has done more good than bad in his 11 starts, mostly in and around the Central West. He boasts very good form on Heavy tracks too. Stablemate Proofreader was $16 into $14 on debut but won like a $2 fav. Generates interest and respect. Bet: Witch Of November each-way, Daily Double 1st Leg 8, 2nd Leg 11 RACE 6 Salute Again will be out of contention for any more trips to Sydney for a Highway if successful given his tally will rise to four. For the record, Salute Again has contested no less than nine TAB Highways, winning at his first one and placing in two others (often without a lot of luck either). Deepwater Artist was $5 all the way out to $10 on debut at Albury on July 18 but you wouldn't see many more impressive wins than his on the day. Scratched from Forbes on Sunday to contest this. So too was Happy Clapper's close relation, Thoughtful. Bet: Salute Again to win RACE 7 Crazy Atom is a Joe Cleary trained mare closely related to the much loved late 1980s galloper, Groucho. This particular mare has three wins and eight placings from her 26 starts, five of the minors were in fact seconds and one of them was at this same track over the same distance. Getting closer than ever to another win. Bellman has never won in 27 starts on Good tracks and while he is one for one on Firm, it is patently clear that he handles, if not even perhaps prefers Soft and Heavy. Form is good too. Brie Brie and Tropicana's Cube are well in contention.
